Hi guys long time Audi drive but new member so HI.

I have a B7 2.0 tfsi quattro for 4 years now and what a lovely car it is

I need to change the cam chain and tensioner as the chain has started to rattle on startup.

Could someone please tell me where I could get this done from and also I've read it's a special tool required for the tensioner what tool is this and where can I buy it from?

Thanks for help in advance.

Hey and welcome,

Firstly where about are you based? Then people can recommend places to get the work done hopefully in your area.

The special tool isn't always needed depending on how you go about it. The 2 main tools are one to lock the cams in place the other is to lift the chain off the tensioner. Which this usually comes in the kit but if you taking it to a reputable garage you shouldnt need to worry "hopefully".

Are you planning on getting the parts yourself then giving them to a garage to do or you prefer to pay them to do it all at once?

Do you know what your engine code is? And what is the vehicles current mileage?

Lets start there and see who and were can assist you with your issue.

Hi thanks for the reply

I'm based in NW London.

I'm looking to buy the parts myself and get the garage to do the work as this way I know all the parts are replaced.

The mileage on the car is 184,000.
Also the engine code is BUL

You need a camshaft locking tool, tensioner pins and the cam variator tool. Cost about £100 to buy.
If anybody was to do this job and not replace 1 of the 2 parts, it wouldn't sound any different, so your proof would still be there.

Shouldn't cost more than £600 all in.
If you get stuck give me a shout.
:)

Well I've been phoning around a few vw Audi specialist to get prices and didn't realise it will cost silly money lol.

Been quoted £300 for labour if I supply my own parts.

I don't want to give it to my local garage as I'm not sure if they have ever done this job.

Is there anybody on this forum who's maybe done this job on there car and wouldn't mind doing my car for me for some extra cash?

Craig do you have a pic on how this tools kit looks or where is the best place to buy it from?

I can do it for you mate no problem, I'm in Leeds which is the only issue, but it could be turned around in a few hours.
I'm just at the unit at the minute, got loads on so I'll msg you later.

Any chance you can post a YT clip of what it sounds like. I would be interested to know what I should be listening out for.

It's just a 1-2 second rattle. Also engine is a little noisey around the chain area.

I think recording a clip every engine will sound a noisey due to the recording.

Got a video clip but won't let me up load it for some reason

Also Craig give me a call on 07581786110 when you get the chance thanks

Is this the tool kit I need guys for cam chain tensioner replacement?

What was the outcome of this as I think mines just starting to rattle, I also gave it a little rev when sat on idle listening and heard a chain noise rattle .Cost wise £600 is madness.
