OK I bought my first Audi four years ago on a five year plan. Starting to look for the replacement in case the lead time is long.

but... I have a A3 TDI 170 quattro sport. Very nice car , but we do lots of short journeys and was not aware of DPF issues. So next time looking for petrol. Would be nice to go up a bit in power , but not looking for a boy racer (i am 58 and would look silly) . Subtle and quick is what I would like. The S1 can be Subtle , but a bit too small. Mrs M loves the A3 and so would stick to that.
However the choice is 180HP or 300 ! What happened to the nice mid range engine in the Golf Gti or the new TT at around 220HP that would be perfect....
Mrs M does not like auto (she drives it 80% of the time) , but no Quattro without S tronic ! WTF. Is there a techy reason why guys ?
I went to my local dealers and all the cars are so blinged up, they seem to be pushing the boy racer image which seems to really get up the nose of most other road users.

I am not ready for my pipe and slippers yet , but begining to think I am not their target audience anymore. The BMW X drive beckons... I got a brochure of the new TT . No real mention of the engines, and hardware ... but lots about pretty lights and stuff.... Perhaps I am a grumpy old sod , but I'd rather know about the engine than fairly lights on the front...

There is a TFSi with 220 BHP....... but not in the UK. "Summart" to do with Audi UK not bringing it in!

Go on be a Divil' and get yourselves an S3...... you know you want to ;)

You raise a good point about the gap in the petrol engine line-up.

I was in a similar position (although wanting an auto) and slightly concerned about the 180ps 1.8 not being powerful enough. However, having had my non-quattro one for some months, I can confirm it was plenty quick enough (for me) and didn't leave me wanting.

Am sure the quattro version should improve things further.

I also had a A3 2.0TDI-170 as my previous A3. When it was time to change I looked at the 150 but found it was too under-powered compared to my 170. I am lucky that I love the s-tronic so I went for the 2.0TD-184 quattro. All of my last 5 A3s have been diesels and I've never had any problems with the DPF in any of them.

The choice of models available in the UK is all down to what Audi UK think they will sell in sufficient numbers. I understand they have to tell the factory in advance how many of each particular model they will require them to produce in right-hand drive.

69-years old with an Audi RS3 (3-years now) and TT roadster and happy :yahoo:
No way do I look, feel, or behave like a 'grumpy old sod' :scared2:

Go buy something quick and interesting... :superman:

:applaus::moody::moody::moody::applaus:My advice would be to seriously look at the Golf GTI. Quick but under stated you can delete the badges if you wish. Whilst it's not Quattro it is a superb handling car that does not suffer from too much loss of grip in the hands of an experienced driver.

However you really are selling yourself short, old at 58? I'm old enough to be your dad (well not quite but I can give you a good few years) and I have an S3. You've probably worked all your life so it's about time you got a treat.

I can assure you it's as sporty as you wish to drive it. Most folks don't know what it is and you can delete the badges if you wish.

It's a great comfortable car which is a delight to drive. Your wife would be delighted.

Go on treat yourself, you know you want to...................................:applaus:

That's settled then, an S3 it is. Just got to spec it, but first go get a test drive, cost you nothing (at the time!) you will be impressed.
It's probably the best all rounder available. Shopping, commuting, sporty driving, taking the great grand children out for the day, all in one quality package.

Bit miffed by the idea of 58 being even slightly passed it. I am 58 and have a manual S3. The car is totally docile and very discrete (not remotely boy racer) when driven gently and blisteringly fast when you want it to be. Having test driven both a S-tronic and a manual the semi-auto does feel faster (and the stats say it is) but appeared (to me at least - admittedly a shortish S-tronic test drive) much more full on all the time than the manual. I know these comments are going to mean getting an adverse reaction from the (majority) S-tronic owners but the S3 remains one of a very few cars with 300bhp that can be bought with a manual gear box and as far as I am concerned better for it. At least there is a choice. Having lived with the S3 for three months the main disappointment is rarely finding the road space to fully use the performance.

I can see this being a problem for me too :(

That's one reason I bought an S3, it's got plenty of HP but has the comfort & quality cabin for the times when you can't use it.

I'm guessing not, but the 1.4 COD 150ps in the A3 is quite nice, thats what I have on order - but i'm guessing you want a bit more than that! I absolutely loved the A3, then again the only cars i've owned was a 10 year old Polo, 4 year old Focus, and 3 year old SEAT so coming from those is a giant leap, i'm guessing coming from an A4 it might feel a little downsized...

The new TT is pretty powerful, looks real nice in this pic I found on a Facebook comment on Audi's webpage. I think they are all 2.0 petrols? Also a few 2.0 diesels. Not sure on BHP but surely packs a punch. Only problem with TT is it's not so practical for carting people around the odd time. Happy hunting :p

Same here. I can't help but stare at it, looks very good.

Shame about having to put a numberplate on the front though :/

There's some good advice on this thread, all very sensible until BH mentioned Sepang, then it went down hill.

Looks like the poster musicegbdf really ought to get an S3 then? Even if it was that blue colour

I am 52 and have an S3... last car was a TTS and before that a TT TDi...... also have a girlfriend who is 38 ;)

The OP is several years younger than me and I enjoy both my S3 and MG. I may even look at an RS3 when available :)

Bus pass soon for me. Will I use it? .......... NO; I'll use the S3 instead :thumbs up:

I've has a Bus Pass for 7 years and only ever used it once and that was on a Park and Ride bus.

Frustrating thing is that they do sell the 8v with a 2.0TFSI 220bhp in the USA.

That is what I have on my new A3 Saloon Quattro 2.0 S-tronic.
It really is powerful. Best car I ever had. :kissmyrings:

Seems the vote us for a S3 then :) can't see a 220 hp A3 saloon in the brochure? Are you in the UK?

Although not usually a fan of black cars because of cleaning them I have to say the Mk3 TT in black looks stunning.

black white , had a feeling you weren't in the UK.
seems Audi uk are restricting us into buying the 300 hp. I think I could get it past mrs m ,if only it did not have leather seats. She is a very strong veggie
She drives the car much mote than I do and she is bigger than me. :).

If I add the price of a divorce it might be cheaper to buy her the "cute" Beetle she likes and get a one year old S3 .... That blue is nice, but also like the dark gun metal grey metallic. That kinda tones it down

'if only it did not have leather seats. She is a very strong veggie' Unless Alcantara is an Andean pack animal it may be the veggie option you are looking for. Apparently even better, my **** is sitting on something 'arty':- 'Result of a unique, proprietary technology, Alcantara® is a thoroughly avant-garde material with aesthetic, technical and sensory qualities that no other material can equal.' (Alcantara company website http://www.alcantara.com/en/index.do). Worth a look - I have never seen so much purple prose in one website.

Same for me, manual s3 which gets me early 40s cruising or mid 20s depending on mood. So much low down grunt and for me is easier to drive around town than a diesel as it is more than happy pootling around at low revs. The motor really is an excellent real world motor and can be as docile or as angry as you want it. Very very easy car to live with and a nice feeling you have a bit of grunt on tap. Definately try one but don't just blat it everywhere as every fast car goes fast, drive it around town and see how it deals with day to day stuff.

The difference for me is living in France I have plenty of road space to fully use the performance...................amongst the bagillion small French diesels nobody has a clue what it is. Given the climate I have alcantara and like it.
