Hi all

I own a 2001 A4 2.5tdi 180 Quattro Sport with a Votex kit. I was wondering what mods/upgrades you would recommend.

I have an RS4 RARB ready to fit.
I have some 18" wheels coming today.

The car has about 93k on the clock and i was wondering what other bits i should be looking at replacing/upgrading to keep her running smoothly.

Had a full service and Cambelts changed at 85k.

I would like to create a list of "things to do" but keeping her in top form is priority.

Cheers

Same car as me.

RS4 RARB is a good idea - I have coilovers on mine which further improve the ride.

Engine wise - your out of luck with off the shelf modifications, aside from a re-map there isnt much in the way of tuning.
What condition are your cams in?

May be worth changing coolant, diff & gearbox oils - I do mine every 30k.

That's a nice low miler. My 04 is 120k and still good. Its had full DIS and cruise fitted by the last owner and a cone air filter which I took time to get used to.Tried 2 tuning boxes but both burnt out and not a lot of diff anyway. The only problem recently was a slight weep from the centre diff:hard to see but only a seal costing about £100 in all to fix.Has 18s which look good but don't improve ride comfort

Cheers Alex I'll add coolant and oil change's to the to do list.

To do:

Fit 18" Alloys
Fit RS4 RARB
Change all oils and coolant.

Whats this EGR delete i hear people talk about? Worth adding to the list? Coilovers worth considering too?

Coolant has likely been changed with timing belts at 85k. If water pump & stat were replaced (which should have been) then the coolant should be fine. Remap should get about 210 bhp. After that it's a hybrid turbo and bigger injector nozzles for bigger gains. Check out adamss24 posts for best advice on these engines. Egr valve can be blanked off on the A series engines without the need to delete it from the engine map. Frequent oil changes at 10k miles or less and using good quality oil is essential to reduce cam wear on the v6 tdi engines.

Thanks for the info. I'll see if i can find adamss24 posts for a read.

Read a little about the cam wear and got myself a little worried. Checked my service book and she was serviced every 10k up to 60k in the book. I purchased at 72k and had a full services at around 85k....

I would be interested in a hybrid turbo later down the road but I really want to make sure everything is sound before dabbling further ahead.

How do I tell if my engine is an A series?

Cheers for the help and advice so far. The list is ever growing!

To do:

Fit 18" Alloys
Fit RS4 RARB
Change all oils and coolant.
EGR Delete

Down the Road:

Remap
Hybrid turbo/injector nozzles

The engine will be an AKE at that vintage, cams are an issue when the top end is noisy. Best way to check for cam wear is by taking the rocker covers off and inspect the cams visually...

Is that a big job? I have done very little spannering on cars besides your basics. I have replaced pistons/rings in 2 stroke engines so I'm not completely useless :p

Wheels arrived. Need to give them a quick clean and fit. Need to find a spare too!

Nice Wheels, Have a look at this thread to see about taking off the rocker covers, I don't feel you would need to take off both sides, one side should tell you the story of the other side, if you get my drift,

Thanks for that. Looks like something I can do. I got really lucky with the wheels £200 with pirelli tyres on too!

Just speculating here but If worse comes to the worse what cam kit is recommended as a replacement? OEM or something else?

OEM are very high price, I have used Kolbensmidth camshafts with INA lifters and rocker arms, 130k on them and they look as good as the day i have fitted them !

Febi/Ruvile are also good quality/OEM suppliers and with prices falling down there's bargains to be had online !

Cheers adamss24. What engine oil do you recommend I use?

OK so the more i read on these the more problems i encounter with my car :banghead:

Firstly and i think the most worryingly is the temperature sensor seems knackered. I commute about 20 miles each way to work and the temperature gauge barely moves.

Second Problem is my fuel gauge is faulty. When it get down to around 1/4 full the reading can drop very quickly to red and the digital read out tells me i have very few miles left in the tank.

I also believe i have a faulty CCM too. :(

Looks like my first free weekend will be filled with playing around with the motor! The mrs will be happy :p

Found the guide to changing the temperature sensor so have ordered a replacement.

I will strip back the carpet and check the CCM to see if water has corroded the unit.

Any one have any ideas about the fuel gauge problem?

I was also going to order the bits to do an EGR delete. Could anyone tell me if the following link is the correct blanking plates?

All help is very much appreciated.

Any ideas regarding the fuel gauge problem?

List of this weekends jobs

To do:

Fit 18" Alloys
Fit RS4 RARB
Change all oils and coolant.
Change the temperature sensor
Check CCM for corrosion
Repair crack in window washer bottle

So changed the stat this morning and I'm gutted to say it made no difference :(

So I'm looking at an expensive thermostat change. I am thinking that if this is such a big job I may as well get the cams changed at the same time as I have my concern. I took a look down the oil filler cap and there looks to be wear :(

This work is way out of my league so will be getting a quote from an independent Audi specialist.

Here a short vid of the engine running.

Where are you?Adamms24 (Chris) on here says he can change the stat alone if you can get to him in London

Mid wales so its a no go.

I phoned the independent and they seemed to not want to know. Chap said he would just leave it. I also asked about getting the cams done and again he said he would leave it until there was a problem.... :(

Most wont .Are you sure its the stat?Heater would be poor and top hose would begin to warm up quickly. If neither then was it a gen CTS?Cheap ebay ones are said to be useless.Any record of the stat being changed when the belts were done?Should have had a new gen stat then and they are usually long lived.CTS s often fail

Yeah was a genuine part. Ordered from Stoke Audi. Heaters do seem slow heating up in the mornings. To be honest iv lost all faith in the garage I was taking it and they changed the belts. Will have to see if I can dig out the receipt but I wouldn't be suprised if they didn't change it.

Seems like the stat is stuck open. Its a shame but always an issue with these

What harm is it going to cause leaving it like this?

The engine running cold will mean it will effect fuel consumption, the heater will run colder for longer

The stat is basic to getting the engine to run at its right temp and it will increase fuel use and wear for it to run below that for longer than normal. If it gets really cold you would need to increase the anti freeze level and I would even try and blank off part of the rad.The dilemma with these is that as they lose their value it becomes difficult to justify their high maintenance bills unless you DIY as much as poss and cut corners.

Typical! I will have to try and find someone else i can take it too.

Fixed washer screen leak
Fitted the wheels
Changed the oil
Changed Air Filter
Changed the RARB - wow what a PITA that was! managed to snap a nut off too! All good now though and it does make a fair difference!

To do:

EGR delete
Change the coolant
Check CCM for corrosion

Near future:

Find someone to replace temp sensor
Replace Cams
Remap
Hybrid turbo/injector nozzles
