Has anyone looked into this? I had a quick look around some German websites and was a bit confused.
Firstly I saw this, it seems to suggest a valvetronic exhaust that's over €1000 http://translate.google.co.uk/translate?hl=en&sl=de&u=http://www.active-sound.eu/&prev=search
Secondly, other sites/forums suggest it's a small electric device plugged into the exhaust system that's €300 ish http://i.ytimg.com/vi/DG6pnceuLW4/hqdefault.jpg
It seems very interesting, disappointingly the video isn't the best quality but on an a4/q7 it makes a big difference

I had this on my last A6 (3.0 bi-tdi) but ended up switching it off in VCDS as the engine sounded throaty enough without it.
I found that the sound aktuator actually masked the twin whistle of the turbos.
