Hi folks

New to the Audi community after buying a 2011 A3 BE (in white). What a fantastic machine. Anyway, I'm looking at a phone mount or suction holder for my mobile. I placed this in my last car (Leon Mk 2 FR) in the vents but dont want to do this with the A3 (looks a bit small).

Also, its not a factory fitted thing so I'm looking to buy one that will mount on the dash? Any thoughts on particular mounts? Auto Express recommended this one...

But I'm not sure where the best place to mount is? Between front vents? Over to the right? Windscreen?

Also, with the texture, would it even stick to the dash (you can use a sticker but not keen on this).

Anyone with any experience in this? Much much appreciated!!

+1 for Kenu Airframe, but it seems to only work well when you have the phone set horizontal and is probably one of the sturdiest of the clip-on type holders you can get. It's only let down is the fact that it is mounted on the vent, which itself is a little flimsy. You can play about with it and get it to be quite stable, but it's the vent that lets it down and every time you attach/detach the phone, you have to realign it a little.

If you want to have the flexibility of setting the phone either vertically or horizontally, and be able to attach and detach the phone with one hand, then there is no other removable universal holder better than Montar Universal Car Mount. At 18 quid on Amazon, it's roughly the same price as Kenu, but by far the most stable removable mount you can buy today. The phone is extremely stable even on the bumpiest of road surfaces. It is fixed by suction to the screen unfortunately, but uses extremely soft/sticky rubber for the suction cup and a spring-loaded mechanism to maintain vacuum, so does stick very well. In the year I used it, it has only fallen off once when I was on holiday in Croatia and it was very hot... The suction cup was a little dirty after being in the bag during flight, so I think it was down to that rather than the temperature. Quick rinse with water and it worked perfectly since.

I own both holders and currently use the Kenu Airframe Plus (for larger phones). It is a little tidier than Montar and you can get the phone to sit just above the stereo, which makes it very easy to hide the charging cable away.

Depending on your needs, you will not be disappointed with either. Both have strong grip on the phone and are probably two of the best holders you can get.

+1 always use Brodit, perfect fitment and sturdy.
I like Brodit too, the way you can buy the car bracket and phone holder separately is great, so you don't have to get a whole new kit every time you change your phone.

I find the 8P bracket very sturdy, easy to fit and is very well placed so the phone is between the two middle air vents.

Yeah I transferred my holder to the new bracket. Fits perfectly and doesn't block the vents.

Thats great guys - much appreciated. Its an Xperia Z1 btw...I prefer the suction mounts as opposed to the vents (can be easy scratched) and so it does'nt block the air flow. I'm open to dash or window mount. The Montar looks quite good - but will suction cups work on the A3 dash? It's a little textured? I was thinking it could go between the two front vents...

The suction cup will not stick to the dash due to the textured finish. I comes with a round plastic pad you can stick to the dash, but then the weakest point will be the glue, which I never tried, but doubt it would hold up well. This mount is best attached to the windscreen, to the right of the steering wheel, so it does not obstruct the view of the road much.

If you are keen on doing a dash mount and don't want the clip mount, you are probably better off with the Brodit, as that would result in a very solid fit, albeit a bit on the pricey side and you'd have to change the mount adapter every time you switch phones.

The Brodit mounting plate is a 'T' piece that slots behind the middle vents with a rear facing tongue at the bottom that slides above the top of the stereo into the dash:

It's far better than suction cups, which occasionally come off when it gets cold and set the alarm off. There are other ones; in my previous Astra I had one that slid in between the left hand side of the stereo and dash but that was lower, further away and tended to get in the way of larger passengers legs.

Have you heard of the imagnet phone mount? It's very neat and sleek. You just pop your phone and go. The magnet's pretty strong so it really stays in place.
