Am just after peoples opinions really. I am thinking about building myself a rally car. I already have a 1.8t a3 and was considering using that but a guy at work who used to be a mechanic thinks it will be too heavy. Personally i think its not a massive car so should be ok. Am i right should i be looking for something else? Rather not put all that work into it the realise i made a mistake. Cheers

plenty of options in making a car lighter.... Go for it!!!!

Going by MSA categories times the capacity in cc by 1.7 to determine the class for turbocharged vehicles.

That puts you in the top class for anything over 2000cc....... You'd be competing against ex-WRC cars and other exotic machinery.
Depends how deep your pockets are really if you actually want to be competitive or just have fun.

You'd probably more competitive in a N/A 1.6 A3.

Ahh i did think i would be in a high-ish category and i wasnt gona skimp on spending to get the car prepared but i think competing against ex wrc cars might be abit above what i was aiming for as a beginner. Maybe i will have a look a category abit lower down to start. Thanks

no harm in building what you can on a budget and entering small local rallies. Id LOVE to do it, one of the best and rawest forms of motorsport imo.
id be using an old evo tho, or if i somehow became very wealthy, a mk2 escort

Usual categories
Upto 1000cc
1001 - 1400cc
1401 - 1600cc
1601 - 2000cc
Over 2000cc

Multiply by 1.7 for forced induction to determine your category.

The cars take proper abuse on the courses, reliability and durability matter alot

Yeah very wealthy is deffinately what you need to be to buy a decent mk2 escort. Nice to dream though. A guy i used to work with had a 205 gti rally car. Ever since i always wanted to give it a go but only just now had the finances to do it. There was a guy that used to race in a few categories up with a cossie powered 306. He said that absolutely flew round the courses.

I was co-driver at Three Sisters last year and I loved it.

My mate started rallying in a 1 litre micra, cost 3.5k to get it racing.

Now he's got a 205 Gti with a 16v 1.6 Saxo motor on OMEX ecu. He races it on a budget and the class is still competitive.

If you want to start racing i'd look for something that has cheap spare parts, lol. You end up breaking the most random things.....
