Quite a few of you have commented on my plans to get the ATF changed in my 3.0TDi Quattro, and asked for feedback. Rather than continue to piggy-back on EddyP's thread about his new car, I decided to start a new thread to report back now that I've had the car back a couple of days, and driven it for more than just the half mile back from the servicing garage.

Changing the ATF cost over £500, taking into account the cost of the fluid, filter, gasket and two hours labour. Now that it's done, I have to say it was worth every penny. I hadn't properly realised before just how much the gear changes had become quite slow and jerky. It happens by tiny degrees over a long time (The car's seven years old, and I've had it for four of them) so you don't really notice it. With the ATF changed, all that is gone. It takes up drive from neutral in an instant, and all changes, up or down, are totally smooth and seamless, on full or part throttle.

I really don't understand why Audi continues to tout these boxes as sealed for life, at least in Europe. In the US, Audi recommends changing the ATF (not sure of the interval but I think it's around 60,000 miles). Meanwhile, the box manufacturer recommends changing it at 100,000km, which is 62,000 miles. Mine has been done at 88,000 miles.

If anyone out there has a ZF tiptronic box in their Audi, with similar mileage, I would urge you to get this done. What I would also say is that unless you are totally confident that you know what you are doing, give the job to a professional. A lot can go wrong if it's not done correctly, and the bill for a new box doesn't bear thinking about. If you are doing it yourself, someone posted a useful guide on an earlier thread. Click here to read it.

I asked my servicing manager about the spec of the ATF, but all he could tell me was that it was OEM, based on my car's specific model and age. My invoice lists a part number for the ATF, it is G060162A2. Of course, yours might be different.

i'm thinking of this seriously on my car at the moment. There have been some posts that people have been told that it shoudlnt be done, or can be detrimental to the gearbox (!?!?!?).

I spoke to an Audi/VW specialist today and they said that it doesnt need it doing at all (and her car is near 200k miles and never done!). But I stressed the point, and they can do it with 1 hrs labour. So I think i might have to go do it, and get the rear diff done while they are there.

Thanks for your post mate, really put my mind at ease of getting it done! :D

Nice to hear of a success story!

We had our X5 gearbox (same ZF box) oil changed when we bought it at 120k miles as it was jerky and it made it so much worse we ended up having the whole box re-conned. The company that did the recon, when I mentioned it was the same box in my Audi but only 70k miles at the time (84k now), said leave well alone until it fails as more often than not it causes more issues than it fixes.

On Xdrivers forum there was a story from a chap that took his X5 back to ZF in Europe for a oil change and seal replacement with similar success to you JDP1962. I think the key thing here is choosing the right people to do the job.

Am noticing sharper gear changes at the moment, so much so that I'm avoiding putting 'the pedal to the metal' where once I might do.

Can anyone recommend a garage or specialist that can do this service/fluid change in Nottingham/Derby for a reasonable price and do a good job?

Just got a quote from Audi for an ATF oil change for £169 (under their fixed price servicing scheme) and a torque converter oil change for an additional £80.

Considering I got quoted £600+ just for the ATF from an independent, to say I was shocked was an understatement! This was from Derby Audi after giving them my registration (and she told me the engine/model etc) so they haven't assumed it's a manual or a 2.0tdi...

After giving them my registration they still have the wrong gearbox type?

Are they not obliged to do the work at the price they have now quoted for?

I see what you're getting at, I wouldn't expect them to charge me and do nothing, plus I would notice no change in the gearbox so it would be fairly obvious that the work had not been done.

I think one of several things will happen:
  • They will realise their mistake before the date it's booked in an offer me a revised price
  • They will realise their mistake when I drop it off, at which point I shall argue that they offered me a 'fixed price service' with me checking that the price was correct and providing my reg number
  • They will realise their mistake once the car is up on the ramps, by which point I will have a curtosey car and no longer be there, so it's in their interest to do the work for the price they quoted, otherwise they're down 1 new audi so long as they don't
  • They do the correct oil change and try to charge me a stupid price when I collect, however I will ring them before going to pick it up and confirm the price because as above, I will have a curtosey car
  • They do the correct oil change and charge me the correct £250 price
After getting the price for the ATF change, I asked about a TC oil change. She went to speak to one of the servicing guys to get a price etc (5 minutes goes by) she comes back and says it'll be another £80. No mention of that gearbos not being included in the price. She even said allowed that the car was a 3.0tdi quattro (the 3.0tdi only came with a tiptronic auto I think?)...

I will see what happens when I take it in anyway

Sorry, Joe, I should rephrase that. Do you trust them to do the job properly rather than botch it?

The main dealers follow a details service guide to do practically everything.

I admit I questioned it too, so I rang them back, and I rang another Audi dealer and asked them to check that it specifically covered the tiptronic box, and they said it did.

I guess I'll only find out once I've picked it up and the work is done, but I'll let you know how I get on...

I'll be very surprised if they honour that price. Just the oil alone costs over £300 at retail.

They are quoting for a Multitronic oil change. Wrong gearbox type entirely.
Multitronic gearbox does not have a torque converter...still a bit cheap considering it takes over 9L of oil to do a full flush...

Little update, Derby Audi just rang to inform me "There is no service interval for your gearbox sir, it is sealed for life"

I said that at 140k miles I wanted to do it anyway (and the TC), they said that was fine and they would still do the work as requested. I again double checked that it was for the Tiptronic gearbox and TC, he confirmed it was.

They also said (when looking for a booking date) that they couldn't do it on a Saturday as this wouldn't be enough time to complete the work. Also indicating that they realise it's not a quick job.

All in all, two Audi garages have quoted the same price (£169) for a Tiptronic gearbox oil change, all indicators point towards the fact that they recognise what transmission it is and the work involved.

If someone has a spare 10 minutes today (and a Tiptronic 3.0tdi), why not ring your local Audi dealership and see if they quote you the same... maybe it's a glitch on their 'fixed price' system? If so I suggest everyone get on board ASAP before they correct it!
