I find wind noise on my B6 quite bad- but then again I've 'downgraded' from a newer car, a 2012 Polo. The wind hitting the windscreen is really loud, and so is tyre roar (all this is only noticeable at 60-70mph +)

Normal?

Tyre noise could be down to low, or cheap tyres, but also because your not used to the open back end compared to the hatchback.
Can't say I notice a lot of wind noise in mine to be honest.

Not much wind noise in mine, & I always go tyres rated under 71db so can't say I get tyre roar either

I notice wind noise when i have the centre dash vents on?
But goes if i switch off centre vents (heating,a/c)

No wind noise to write home about and Vredy Ultrac tyres very, very quiet...

Not quite Jag standards but pretty ****** quiet...

Umm. Strange. I do find it noisy as hell! I mean it's obviously had a windscreen replacement in its life but all seems ok on that front. The tyres are mid range Avons ZT5's- not what I'd chosen but it was bought with them on and they'd only been used for about 1500 miles and even now have only done 4000. They've got a huge amount of life left in them.... Wonder how quiet a B6 is supposed to be now!

do you have heko wind deflectors ? reason i ask is because believe me the noise they give is shocking i got some on mine and the wind noise on the motorway is noticeably louder but like anything you get use to it

ive lost the top windscreen trim, which connects to the chromes panel, that create wind noise on mine. :s

You should start by checking the trim around your doors, then check the fit of the seals and the frame of the doors themselves. Sometimes you can run your finger along the edge where the door seals as you're driving and hear a change in sound- that's the spot then. Or you can soak the rubber areas in detergent and watch for the bubbles when driving fats. Can be messy though... ;)

The main noise I hear is creaking doors or windows, they're all closed but I guess I could try adjusting the latches a bit, I've left it for now as I don't want to make anything worse.

Not here, you can pretty much whisper to yr passenger at 70mph, as said though the climate control can sound like a wind noise in a certain position, mine will for the first few mins, then it changes the vents and goes quiet.

It's strange how mine isn't so quiet! I'll try the vents and check the seals. I definitely can't whisper to my passengers at 70mph- a phone conversation is hard to have!

Get some Silicon Lube from Halfords - a spray can - lube all the rubbers. That'll stop that. Or, wipe them over with glycerine - easily obtainable from a chemist.

As regards wind noise, mine is certainly noiser that the B7 I had some years ago - but it was new at the time and the B6 is 11 years old. Tyre noise does vary between makes - I have basic, budget Vredesteins and they aren't all that quiet. The only other thing I've found which can cause excessive noise was failing wheel bearings, one of which sounded just like wind noise, the bearing wasn't rough and we had real trouble tracing which one was bad.

When it was changed, the problem went away.

Mine's fairly silent and I've never heard wheel noise unless the wheels are spinning (which is fairly often), even when it's needed new bearings I haven't heard the wheels and overall the main thing I can (barely) hear is the engine/exhaust noise unless I'm traveling past 70mph with the windows down in which case I hear/feel some pretty unbearable wind.

Just checked everything. There is no logical reason why it's so noisy. As I say, unless I'm used to newer cars? Back in 2001, maybe the B6 was quiet... I've just come back from a motorway trip and the wind noise at 70mph is constant- it's as if there was heavy winds out there but there isn't, today is a lovely day!
Tyre roar is pretty bad too- and again- although the Avons are mid range, the noise on them is high too imo. According to mytyres they're pretty quiet too at 71db....

Only way to know is to take me out for a ride in your car and I'll take you out in mine haha.

Birmingham at the mo', yours says Leeds and I've met someone from Leeds on here but he's got a petrol (pretty nuts one too). Could just go to view a car then not buy it... might be a bit strange pulling up in the same car though haha.

Have you looked on the roof to see if there's a roof rack and a bicycle up there?

I'm pretty much deaf so all cars are quiet to me.... ;)

I know exactly what the problem will be... In fact I'm near 100% sure!! It dawned on me at 2am in bed this morning haha- I reckon it's the sump cover- I bought the car with it not being properly secured, half the screws are missing so clearly it's not sitting flush. I just need to get myself the screws (what are they btw?) and it should be sorted. Sounds like it will be doesn't it?
****** I've no axle stands though!

Saying that Im sure the oil change guy used cable ties to secure it- I mean it ain't hanging off but maybe it's not 100%- could this be the cause?

In my experience it'll sound more like Rolf Harris stuck under there with a waffle board, but as he's doing porridge now, it probably isn't...

Certainly worth taking it off or getting a screw pack off ebay or whatever as it should be secure and try it.
