Oil problem

hi all

got a bit of an oil problem, yesterday on the way home from work my oil light came on, so when i got home i left it for a while, then went out and checked it, dipstick showed that it was bone dry, i should state here that ive been a bit irresponsible and havnt checked the oil for about 6 months, last checked it when i first bought the car

so up to halfords i went and bought the correct oil, the guide states its a maximum of 4.3L, ok so i thought, now seeing as there is no oil at all in the engine, a 4L bottle should cover this...

ive now got too much oil in, the oil level is about 4cm above the max dipstick marker

now im guess im going to have to drain it back out, but can anyone advise my error please?

The oil level between the minimum and max level of the dipstick is about 1L. You didn't just pour 4 litres of oil as a top up did you??
 
Whoops what he said, yeah off the stick doesn't mean empty it's below minimum, I would not drive it until you've got the level right.
 
hi, yes there was no oil showing on the dipstick at the time

i thought the minimum marker was the first indentation (to which oil was below) and the maximum marker was the second indentation?
 
Not quite dude the dipstick doesn't touch the bottom of the sump it's just for getting the last litre to the right amount
 
Get it drained asap and don't start the engine- you've really overfilled it!
 
Jack up, drain it down & refill when cars level, as above do not drive the car as it is, oil pressure will be vast.
 
thanks guys, i did drive it to work this morning which is 10 miles, everything seemed ok although running temp raised quickly

problem is i take the motorway back home and really dont fancy the journey
 
Do not drive it anymore, drain oil or you may regret it.

ive just dropped the car off at a local service centre on the same business park as my work, hopefully i can pick it up later, another £41 down the plughole...

(had to fork out £140 yesterday for a new window on my porch)
 
That's the thing with cars- especially older ones- it never ends! Although that mistake isn't the car's fault!
 
definitely lesson learnt, i should have known better seeing as ive tinkered with cars for 16 years

well £41 later and £20 worth of castrol edge oil, its sorted :)
