On Saturday I paid my road tax for next year. Then on Sunday I got a new car that I collect this week.
How do I get a full refund as the new tax doesn't start until October?

Thanks
Phil

I think it would be better to go directly to the source for the answer you seek no?

if you get it back before it starts then full refund
if you don't its - 1 month

Got home yesterday to find an envelope from DVLC on the mat, thinking it was a refund cheque I opened it, and to my surprise was the following letter with the original V14 form.

"We have returned your V14 form as you have not enclosed your tax disc" they also returned my V5C/3 form change of registered keeper

So I phoned them and was told that they can't refund me unless I send the tax disc back, I tried to explain I had paid for a years tax starting on the 1st October in advance as I was working away, she just didn't get it.

What a joke. The changes are becouse they have gone onto an automatic system

What a bunch of jokers! If its all electronic now then what is the reason for sending old tax disk back? Also, did DVLA ever hear about this thing called the Internet? Why not have an online service to get your money back?

Sorry for ranting, but this sort of thing just makes my blood boil.

I asked them how I can send a tax disc back that they no longer issue. She said you need to send a covering letter. Why don't they just use their system to see that I don't have a disc to send back?.

I'm just organisjng a px for a newer car at a a car trader now and according to them, the V5 modification of owner during sale will automatically trigger the tax refund.

I'm keeping the tax disk just in case.

Well after 23 day, 2 letters and a phone call I still have not received my road fund licence refund. I'm still being told that they can't issue a refund unless I send in my old tax disc. I keep asking them " how can I send you the disc when you don't issue them?"
What a shower of dog poo

On the subject of tax refund, now that my S3 is dead, I need to sorn the car, I have a private reg on it, do I need to retain/transfer the plate first before I can sorn the car, or can I sorn it first then retain/transfer at a later date?

After another phone call. I was told that my details had been deleted off the system and I would have to reapply for a refund
And don't forget to send the old disc back "what!!! Your having a joke"

Sounds like a right pain. Hope you get it sorted.

My refund cheque just arrived, after a month of me selling the car automatically. I guess you fell into the time when they were switching to the new process :-/

That or they are completely useless
Glad you got sorted

So after doing my bits of research, and rereading the DVLA text on this, plus asking a few car traders, it appears I can retain my plate after claiming my roadtax refund back. The requirements is I'm still the owner of the car, and there is no break between having the car taxed and getting it SORN'd, so if you SORN the car after the car tax has lapsed, there will be an issue of retaining the plate I think?

Have you got your refund back yet @Phil-1 ?

We'll sort of.
I received a cheque in the post but they have deducted a months worth. When I spoke to them for the third time they said "We only refund for whole months" if you sorted this when I first sent it it would have been a full refund £130!!!!

Told them that they need to check there records and see I'm entitled to the full refund. Also refused to bank the cheque until the outstanding amount arrives.

If you bank a cheque and its wrong, you are excepting the payment and it can be more difficult to get your remaining payment.

Good luck mate, a month is a month! I just got conned out of a months roadtax, but I really cba'd to claim it back, as I can't prove I didn't use the car between purchasing and taxing it.

It's the principle. I purchase 12 months tax 2 weeks in advance as I was working away and didn't want to forget about it. Then a week later sold the car.
2 letters and 3 phone calls later and they still can't get it right

Well after 48 days I have at last got my refund. It's taken 2 letters and 3 phone calls. I never got an answer to my questions, we I didn't expect anything else.
