My 98 A3 AGU sometimes doesnt want to start with a warm engine. When the engine is cold, it takes a second or two to pick up, but when the engine is warm after being driven for a while, if I then park it for 10 minutes and try to start, the starter will turn but the engine won't run, sometimes. Excuse any wonky technical talk, I know little about fixing cars, and the things I do know are often in the wrong language (Dutch).

Can anyone help with this?

A long shot here, but it sounds as if fuel is taking a while to get to the engine. Does having a full tank of fuel make the car start any quicker? If so, it could possibly be the fuel pump

My money would be on crankshaft position sensor breaking down when warm buddy

As above, mines had the same issue on and off for the last year, finally opened the wallet last week for a genuine sensor from audi. It's not any easy job by any means, oil filter off job as it's located right behind it.
I've still got to change mine, just got to time it right with work and the weather

I managed to do mine on my drive jacked up without removing any other parts sensor was a bit tight in the block but not too hard I am a mechanic tho

Temperature gauge works fine far as I can tell. Stays at bottom for a few minutes, slowly climbs to 90, then stays there. Climbs a bit higher than 90 when just parked.

With regards to the fuel pump: I've noticed no real difference between full and low tank.

Can I find a how-to on replacing the crankshaft position sensor anywhere?

Thanks for the replies, guys, it's much appreciated :)

defo crankshaft censor had the same on mine ...20 pound to replace the censor. just behind the oil filter bit of a ****** to get at easier to take the filter off
