Hi all, I need to change the thermostat on my 1.8 tqs, I've done it on the transverse engines and it's a pita, is it particularly difficult/annoying on these cars? Any tips or is there any guides kicking around? I have searched but nothing came up for the b5 just b6 and later models! Cheers, Russ

its not too bad.

Undertray off (if its there)
Find and follow lower radiator hose to the thermostat housing.
Remove hose from housing
Unbolt housing and remove thermostat
Fit new stat and seal and reinstall housing
Reattach hose.

You will probably need to remove the metal brace to improve access (2 bolts). You might think you dont need to detatch the hose, but its FAR easier to reinstall the stat without the hose pulling things around.

Thanks man, much, much simpler than on my S3 then!! Hopefully it will get up to temp and improve mpg now. Hopefully anyway

you'll need decent 1/4" drive socket set too as access to the front most bolt is a little awkward and bigger tools wont fit.

I think it's also easier with a ground socket and a wobbly for said socket. Wish I'd thought about taking that hose off as well.......

The thing to remember is that its not where its manufactured, its all about quality control. Many big brands manufacture in China, but they employ rigorous quality control to ensure the stuff being produced is up to scratch.

I've never used an Audi stat, i've had a couple pattern ones go bad, one after a year or so, and the other after about a week, but that one turned out to be a piece of plastic stuck in it from the water pump impeller. Luck of the draw i guess!

I agree with Aragorn here. I have seen posts saying only buy a thermostat or water pump from the dealer. When you buy a water pump from VAG it's often remanufactured. The Audi supplied thermostat will be made by Behr Hella (now branded as Mahle), Calorstat or Wahler. We supply Behr,Febi and Gates thermostats and have zero returns on any. It's not where it's made it's how it's made. I'm an OE snob to an extent but there are instances where the after market can provide a product that's equally as reliable. I think it's critical not to go for the cheapest available but equally the most expensive is not necessarily the only valid choice.
