Thanks in advance

My wife will be disappointed - she thought what a great idea this would be - wifi in cars. Looks like she won't get the patent!

Nice idea, but I've no need of it. I can just use my phone as a wifi hotspot, and tether my iPad and Mrs Grumpy Old's tablet to that.

Yeah as said I like the idea but why not just get a phone contract with uncapped unlimited Internet and a phone capable of broadcasting Internet, some contracts are only around £10 per month and you get minutes/texts with that.

I have 4 gig of internet on my phone and have used that before today i am thinking about when i am in the car or out with the kids and they want to play games or go on the internet using my phone as a hotspot just means that i will be left with no internet at least with this it isnt using you data if you see what i mean

Is that on a mobile or one of these devices ?
I guess it's SIM-only because I was originally paying £30 a month for an iPhone 4, but when the two year lock-in was up, I didn't upgrade my phone, which allowed me to drop to the £18, but still have 3's "One Plan".

The 3 one plan is no more Jeff, so becareful when you upgrade next, you will lose the unlimited tethering, it will drop to 2GB max tethering per month, so your sim only contract is losing them money if you are abusing it! Only problem with the 3 network is coverage, it's either poor, or ****** brilliant, there's not much of an inbetween.

GiffGaff has cheap contracts with uncapped unlimited Internet and they run through o2. Signal comes down to who's the best provider in the area, I'm city living and all networks are fine.

Thanks for all the help guys i have now found another one from O2 which i believe is called personal hotspot same idea

If you really need data in the car, I would just get an off-contract 4G-capable MyFi dongle for about 100 pounds and a monthly rolling or PAYG with whichever provider to have the flexibility of switching to a better tariff if one became available at a later date.

Three seem to be very good in the South and offer LTE as part of their deals at no additional cost (although they did raise their prices a bit recently), so that would be my choice. As far as their tethering limits, I am yet to see it affect me - I just moved into a new build on a new street/development and the developer forgot to tell BT Openreach, so no broadband or telephone line for me for the last 6 months. I added the tethering pack on my Three mobile contract and have been running up 20GB+ of monthly data usage for four months straight without any additional charges or complaints from Three... Their portal does not mention any data usage limits, so until they actually start showing your modile data and tethering usage, I struggle to see how they could enforce it :)

I think that tethering from your mobile phone in the car would probably be the best value option in any case.

They also throttle your bandwidth significantly when you do use it legitimately, so your data performance will be nowhere near what you can expect on EE, Vodafone or Three.

I just did my speedtest on Three LTE: http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/a/1012930914
Granted, these tests' accuracy is not great, but I consistently get these numbers where I have strong signal. EE LTE might be even faster, but they current data packages a little pricier than Three, although you do get larger data allowance deals, so a bit more flexibility.

If you really want Giffgaff just for data and can live with terrible performance, the only option, as far as I know, is to get one of their data goodie bags which have a commercial model that is specifically "designed" for that. Then there's the fact that they use O2 infrastructure, which has been creaking form over-subscription for years and had quite patchy signal quality when I used them last year.

Really? Why would Giff Gaff do that? I'm with them but the O2 network is not that great in the Highlands and I refuse to go back to EE/Orange due to the TERRIBLE customer service you get from their call centres in India!!!!
My Girlfriend is with them and alot of the time when topping up, she never receives the credit!!!! Sorry slightly off topic here.

Does anybody know how I might be able to find out what the best network is in my area?

Each provider will have some sort of coverage map on their site, but these are not very precise or give you any idea of what to expect in real life.

The best way I can think of, is to just buy a PAYG sim on the network you are interested in and try it out for yourself over a few days as part of your routine. I know it's not very scientific and can be a hassle, but is likely to give you the best impression of signal strength and quality of service.
