Jardo's 'Journey to quattro' - My Story...

The seats look very very nice Mr Jardo but you do look rather special needs in that pic lol

Cool as ****.

Gaaaaaaaay!

Just spent 2 days reading this thread from start to finish. Been quite a journey indeed, very well documented. Glad to see you didn't end up selling the S3 (yet). I'm interested to see what you'll do next with this car.

I would be requesting a refund for 2 days of your life personally! :D

Pahahahahaha. I guess you'll be putting in for a refund for the half a session you missed at ADI this weekend. :lmfao:

Glad you enjoyed the thread, I might read it some time just for a laugh. I'm sure I'll giggle at some of the crap I used to come out with!

hiiiii jardoh!!!

sorry if this was already mentioned but why cant you have buckets and a harness with no cage?

Becuse internet trolling **** clowns believe that in the event of a roll over the roof could cave in and kill you.

With you strapped in place the roof COULD come down on you, or the pillars and screen come back towards you leaving you with no flexibility or movement to get out the way as the forces that be come at you. Naturally as you take an impact your body is going to move itself out the way with the forces.

Whilst this is true, having harnesses are HUGELY beneficial in every other crash eventuality.

Other reasons are shoulder straps, with a harness bar on a cage you can achieve a nicer angle for the shoulder straps to make them work more effectively and stop spine compression in the event of a monster crash, bending the floor or the bucket seat.

There's quite a lot of reasons, but almost every single one of those reasons is also applicable to a standard 3 point and basic seat.

Which is why it's a **** thing to say.

Happy about that!

Nick was happy.

I've really got to thank Nick, his precision drilling (lol), engineering thought and above average know how made this all really easy.

10482277_1549944371887405_9007233068255935771_n.jpg

I got to the workshop about half past 6, when Nick turned up at quarter to I had the drivers seat out and that was about it.

Nick set about stripping the seat down to it's base.

With the seat stripped to the base Nick measured loads of things and ran around using a tape measure in an odd manner, with like two inches of the start of the tape not being used.

Very odd.

Then Nick put a seat on my bonnet without my noticing, and when I discovered I was furious and nearly killed him.

10730962_1549944395220736_6047249711178446500_n.jpg

Nick mounted the seats to the subframes, I fitted the harnesses, hoovered out the car and removed the passenger seat.

10647114_1549944415220734_7296288148725698635_n.jpg

Nick then gave me one completed seat which I fitted, adjusted and fed through the harnesses.

10419520_1549944341887408_2557974222795556155_n.jpg

Then he gave me another seat and I did the same.

10173527_1549944305220745_8250894085959566193_n.jpg

Then we enjoyed sitting in the new seats.

10731118_1549944318554077_1352284282598613134_n.jpg

Then I drove it home at 10. So three hours work to fit two buckets, adapt subframes, remove belts and fit 6 points.

They're great. :thumb:

I say the standard seats EASILY weigh 50kg's a piece. The unused bracketry, seatbelts, nuts, bolts, wiring, plastics and rubbish I removed from the car is likely a further 10kg's.

New seats I would say weigh about 15kg's. (I'm fairly accurate with weight guessing after working in a very posh bike shop for years)

If we averaged it out at about a 65kg weight saving, I'm happy with that.

And the car feels totally different to drive now, I'm much happier throwing it around with some seating stability.

All in all a job well done, and thank you very much Prawn. I would never have got it done so quickly on my own!

These look f***ing awesome! Looks reasonably simple to install aswell and the price is good too. Can see myself getting a pair of these for Xmas. What were the sizes of the seats like?

And I haven't been decapitated yet.

Buy an excel size, don't even entertain standard. It's for children.

"Simple" is not a word I would ever use to describe the installation. Prawn will agree.

There's certainly a method to fitting them and adapting the subframes, and once you've done it then it's quite a straight forward, if very precise procedure.

:)

My next mod! Oh wait, I don't have an S3 anymore! :sob:

Well you do.

Just man up and re-shell it and stop being a pussy. You could have done half of it by now, you've spent nearly a week dithering.

Yeah Jo Jo a reshell with the bare minimum would be pretty awesome. I'd love to do a ground up build of an S3. I done it with a 205 before (which is much simpler of course).

Jardo, how is the excel? I'd probably need a lazyboy size.

I'm impressed with these.

for £300, they're redicuolous.

Cover quality seems as good, better than the entry level Forza seats which are FIA spec but similar price. The sidemounts are 3mm steel, and the runners are proper double locking jobbies.

I was worried the standard seat would be too tight for Jardo, but it's actually not too bad even for me at about 95kgs.

The passengers XL seat is more 'comfy' in some respects, but the drivers seat holds you very nicely and I don't think it'll be a problem to use daily as Jardo will.

the installation onto the S3 bases was SO easy, thanks to Daz and George for the heads up on that one!

Oh, and Jardo - the most inaccurate part of a tape measure is the end, that's why we don't use it when working to a 1mm tolerance (and ending up within 5  )

Excellent work chaps. Seats look great! They also sound like a bargain.

Sounds like you've saved some serious weight too which is also a bonus.

Those seats look amazing for the price!! Did you modify the standard seat subframe to mount the new seats to??

the S3 recaros are a generic fitment seat Marc, so mount on a flat base. As such they have a tailored subframe that gives a flat platform to mount a bucket on, and also sit fairly low.

Surprisingly simply install really. lots of careful measuring, then just 4 holes to drill to mount each seat.

The only harness point that needs adding is the tunnel side lap belt. For this I drilled into the side of the box section of the subframe, and enlarged an access hole in the underside to slip a nut inside.

Jardo, how is the excel? I'd probably need a lazyboy size.

A man of your stature would really need the excel.

If you've got any bigger than a 32" waist you will need the larger seat, even for me with a 32" waist it's "snug" to say the least.

I probably should have got a pair of excels, but the standard seat does hold better.

Oddly, i expcted it to be far too tight, but i found it really quite comfy!

I'm a 34'' waist, about 14 1/2 stone, and found the standard seat far more comfy than i expcted to. Absolutely perfect for a trackday.

I'd probably enjoy the XL a bit more for every day use, but I wouldn't be upset having the standard, it's a nice fit.

For someone with a Girls figure like Jardo I think it's fine.

thanks for the info dude much appreciated

love the seats in there!!!! that and half cage was suppose to be my next mod but clearly motor rebuild was priority

I removed this.
10688413_1550084535206722_4638196704111945437_o.jpg

I shoved a hose pipe in the pipe and undid the bottom radiator hose.

I left it for 5 minutes.

Then realised I hadn't turned it on, so I turned it on and left it another 5 minutes.
Then I fitted this.

10620376_1550084531873389_1860594697357833229_o.jpg

And filled it up with a healthy G12 mix in prep for winter.

Then I cobbled together a battery box with parts George sent me.

1557291_1550084528540056_6685804081254146724_o.jpg

I also replaced almost every jubilee clip in the engine bay.

Then I took this picture.

906395_1550071635208012_8055267420910096906_o.jpg

And now I'm waiting for some 85 shore pourable polyurethane to be delivered to I can solidify my engine mounts.

Looks miles better with a clean expansion bottle! Glad you're happy with the seats, they look great. Really don't understand why they are so cheap!

They are cheap because they are going to bite his head off and then crush him into a tiny little ball. Lol They look really nice

George has the same seats, so at least we'll be able to give one another the "heads up" when one of us crashes.

I hope the delivery driver had a roll cage in his van/lorry. These seats with harnesses are dangerous without one

You should probably rest and recover after being decapitated I've heard it's quite traumatic. Then let us know when your ready.

Things I have noticed in the 80 miles of thrashing I've done today.

I think it feels quicker. Which is probably largely psychological, but I have certainly removed 65kg's from the car in the front seats (accounting for adding the new ones) and 20 kg's from the rears.

That's putting my power to weight figure (starting from 1420kg's) to somewhere about 216bhp/ton.

That's not going to have made a he effect on how the car feels when you plant the throttle. But what it has done is almost transformed the way the car feels from turning the wheel to exiting a corner.

It has had a great effect on braking.

As I've said though the main thing is the way the car feels, much more purposeful and really rather cool.

With that in mind I spent some money on her today, seeing as she is going to get a beating in a couple of weekends time.

And she appeared in this months VW Driver!

10697395_1550195685195607_8975256865676970027_o.jpg

Now that I know my steering wheel is the right size, I've ordered a replacement in higher quality.

My poly is here, and I've ordered a new engine and gearbox mount to fill.

I've also ordered an OBD2 data logger and diagnostic tool.

I'm working in some sort of way to bring the gear lever up slightly to bring it closer to the wheel because if I'm honest it feels a little odd.

Then I hoovered it to death and really cleaned up the inside, I mocked up some rear panels in plastic but after consultation decided that I would keep the rear cards because they make the fit and finish nice.
