Well.. That didn't last long!

I've owned the car for 5 days, and I'm heading down the M5 to Devon for the weekend, when BANG - A stone hits the windscreen, and this is immediately visible:

Windscreen

I rang my windscreen cover place (£65 excess, so not *too* bad), and after asking me if I had Audi lane assist (I don't), and whether mine has the grey sun strip across the top, they've agreed for someone to come down and fit me a new one.

On the plus side, the stone entirely missed the paintwork, hit the windscreen and disappeared, so no further damage was done. Lucky! Also lucky that I haven't put my new tax disc holder on it yet - In the mean time I've put my tax disc into the crappy one the dealer gives you until my new windscreen is put in, then I'll put my new holder in. :)

That sucks!!

Just make sure they fit the acoustic windscreen AND refit all the sensors for light/rain etc.

Yeah the girl on the phone made me feel a lot more comfortable by asking me all of those questions without prompting, so all going well, it should be relatively painless! I think the sun strip across the top of the windscreen doesn't come with it if you don't have the comfort pack does it? In which case that should be acoustic anyway.

At least they sound like they know what they are doing re: the different windscreens for the A3.

Yep, sounds like they're doing it correctly :)

A friend of mine had a golf with acoustic glass and rain sensors etc. The windscreen company refused to acknowledge it needed any special glass or that it needed the sensors replacing. He had to get written confirmation from VW in the end as to what their procedure was for changing a windscreen before they'd cough up to replacing the glass and all the sensors.

Yeah the (incredibly sympathetic!!) lady on the phone told me that because the model's been available to them since 2012, they've ironed out most of the problems related to it - She also confirmed to me that it still has all the sensors in it without me asking. It's auto windscreens if you're curious. :)

So the windscreen guy turned up yesterday and was visibly blown away by how quickly I've had to have a replacement screen. :(

He looked at my windscreen and spotted straight away that his replacement screen didn't have a sun strip (I specified that it had!), so read the model number off to his boss who looked the right one up.

Apparently there's no "OEM" glass made up yet, so the windscreen companies are ordering direct from the dealers! The incorrect screen that he had with him was Audi glass, and the one coming on Friday is coming direct from the dealership along with his assurance that it's going to be the right screen. :)

LOL - It's a crack, but there's a chip from the stone that's caused the crack.

coolguy - Yours has baffled me!

Me too, I'm still trying to figure out how this was done.

I was following a guy in an A3 along the M4 doing about 60 when a pheasant flew out in his path and hit the windscreen. It was ruined with glass fragments on the dash and in the front of the car...needless to say, so was the pheasant!

The guy had put a deposit down on the car and was taking it out for a test drive. It still had the red on white number plates!

Hope yours gets fixed without too much trouble!

Whoa - Very very bad luck for both him and the pheasant!

The chap came back with the correct windscreen and fitted it with no problems. Thanks :)

I posted on another thread on here about my Audi A3 8v windscreen and the fact that you can see distortion on both corners when looking through the glass, did you notice this on your replacement glass? I had a replacement by Audi under warranty and the new glass is just as bad

I can't say I've noticed that to be honest. I was fault-picking as well, because I was worried the glass would be sub par, but it was fine.

Can you take a photo of the distorted glass in action?

No you cannot see it with a photo a few other owners have noticed the same problem. Sit in you audi and focus on something a car number plate etc and move your head side to side in the area straight in front of you above the steering wheel you will get a strange effect like looking through a jar

I'm wondering if there is fundamental problem with the screens.
I had a tiny impact in roughly the same area as the OP - with the same resulting crack.
This is also the same area as the optical distortion. Maybe internal stresses in the glass.....?

Yes maybe seems strange on an expensive car that we have this issue its should not be that way. Ive been in contact with Audi Uk and they said I can take it back again to Audi and have another replacement screen but it seems pointless as it will be the same - I did notice on the tinted screen the distortion was not as bad as on the SE screen.
