Evening all

Will be taking delivery of my new A3 later this month (new to me, at least) and during the test drive I noticed that the boot contained a canister of tyre gunk and no space saver. The oddity is that under the boot carpet there was a whole load of OEM polystyrene and a cut out for a space saver, except that there was a circular piece of polystyrene bolted to the boot floor where the space saver should have been.

I've searched on here for some enlightenment but alas was unable to find the answer to my specific question. So the question for all you knowledgeable folk out there is: was the space saver an option (be it cost/no cost) on this specific model of A3 and, if so, is it possible to buy an aftermarket space saver? I ask because I really don't want to be relying upon some tyre gunk to get me home if I get a flat!

I see no reason why an 18" space saver wouldn't fit (perhaps one like this: click me).

Thanks in advance for any clarity you can offer a newbie! :thumbs up:

have also just taken delivery of my (new)2010 s3 and it has a spacesaver under the boot floor, also jack etc in the polystyrene moulding but i notice some cut outs not filled and was wondering what went in these slots

I have been down this route with our TT from 2008 that has the gunk and no tyre. I have an 8P S3 and this is the part number of the space saver it has:

1K0 601 027 B

This wheel can also be found on the Mk 5 Golf GTI and R32.
Pop that part number into Ebay and you will get lots of hits as the scrapyards know people want them. I went for one with the polystyrene tool tray as I needed to discard the original tool tray in the TT to get the wheel to fit in under the boot carpet.
The Mk 1 TT and Mk IV Golf wheel will not fit.

It is worth scanning the photos carefully for a good one as some can be quite rusty.
Cheers,
Peter

Thanks Peter. I had found a thread on another (lesser) Audi forum which mentioned that the spare from the Mk5 Golf would fit, so it's good to have that statement confirmed.

I'll get one from eBay and will be sure to bag a rust free example!

Cheers mate.

Looking at some pics on eBay it looks like some kits have a towing eye and screwdriver, as well as a jack and brace. Could these be what yours is missing, perhaps?

So I ordered a spare wheel and tool kit (99 quid on eBay) and it's arrived safely - seems to be virtually new and is in great nick. Once I take delivery of the new car then I'll feedback on how well (or otherwise...) it fits in the space in the boot!

thanks for that....hadnt thought about a towing eye, will check later.

Yep...there's definitely a towing eye in my toolkit. Wonder if you could source one separately to add to your toolkit??

Well, am I glad I bought the space saver? You bet. Not only does it fit perfectly in the well of the boot, but it also fits perfectly on the car...which came as quite a relief when I had a flat tyre on Saturday! 99 sheets well spent if you ask me! :)

Good call on the spare 'doughnut' wheel! There's nothing like regretting something you did not get ahead of time, like the time I drilled through a central heating pipe in a new house just because I did not buy a drywall pipe detector beforehand... That's another story, for another day though :keule:

Sounds like that may have been costly... :crying:

Not too bad... Had to spend 80 odd quid on a pipe connecting adapter and a new drywall section with some paint. The worst thing was the moment when the water hits your face and you realise that the drill you are holding is still plugged into the mains

...which is why I always use a stud & pipe detector before I drill! :)
