Brads A4 2.0 TQS build thread

Spools at like 1800 rpm too. Crazy thing. I need to put mine back to quattro ideally as 4th gear wheel spins while overtaking isn't as fun as it sounds

So is k04-064 pushing similar power to gt2871? I would think that gt30 would be better off with a 2.0 stroker rather than 1.8

On par with gtx28 with faster spool. I'd love a full frame gt30 or 35. Just cannot afford it. Contemplating putting her up for swap on a mk5 derv

I woudlnt be fitting some chinese ebay turbo to my car...

Genuine garret GT28 is about a grand.

Brand new Genuine K04-064, with manifold, is about a grand....

See the light.

Ive took the plunge in to a GT setup and im not going back i looked at the K04-064 but you need adapter plates custom down pipe with modded hotside flange custom outlet/inlet pipes on turbo as well as all custom hoses i basically picked all this up for £120 delivered !!

Some bits are doubled up to so basically need a manifold, turbo and a custom tip/S2000 filter and i can get it on actuator pressure for now would you say i need away with the saab reds or they upto the job and what actuator pressure would you run stock 12psi ??

And are you planning a k04-064 kev you seem pretty well for it :p

If i had my time again with the K300 knowing what we do now, i'd probably have gone straight to the K04-064.

I was thinking of picking up a TFSI K03 to have a play with, as they're good for 280hp or so, but really i need to get my existing projects sorted out rather than spending money on yet more.

Why do they use the transverse tfsi turbo and not the A4 one wouldnt it fit better than the transverse given the hotside flange size/discharge pipe ??

Id of loved to have got the F21 on and mapped but im just not that confident with the product anymore with having the turbo go south which is now puffing out smoke after being stationary for a minute or so, and now my second manifold has signs of it cracking in the exact same place i wanted something different and as the kit popped up on srs i thought why not as 350hp will be my goal.

Well on TFSI both transverse and longitudinal are mounted the same way round, and its the same way as the A4 anyway. The TFSI K04 fits the A4 easier than it fits the A3, its just a bit annoying that flange catches the engine mount.

Also, there is no longitudinal TFSI K04 car, which is why theres the mounting flange issue catching the engine mount. TFSI K03's use a smaller flange and this clears the mount just fine.

The aftermarket manifold issue is a real concern for me, i simply couldnt be ***** ******* around with manifolds, which is why my K300 is mounted to a ported standard A4 manifold.

Yeah I remember I had one of those 034 cast manifolds on when I had the K04 and it eventually cracked. Not sure why no one can make them last as well as the oem ones.

I am going to have a read up on these TSFI turbos as seems like a viable alternative.

TBH if i go for the ATP its covered and with it having the vband i wouldnt be too ****** at changing it if it does crack as it will be more accessible than a stock location turbo.

Anyone tested spa manifold?

Looking at the ATP to PSI they mount up totally different, but looking closely at these id say the V-band will allow for tweeking slightly and there should be enough in the downpipe to allow it to fit regardless of which manifold i go for !!

ATP -

PSI -

Also found this which has a built in AFR/EGT sensor bung, but is abit on the expensive side and probably a cheap one at that !!
ROTHE-MOTORSPORT - TURBOKRÜMMER / GUSSKRÜMMER - VAG 1,8 T 5V Turbo, T25-FLANSCH | eBay

Think thats an externally wastegated turbo and not what im after biggest i will go is 2876R but im after a 2871R w/ 3" cover.

The new 3" maf housing i have has both bolt oreintations which will work with my existing setup and ME7 if i decide that route :)

Bit of a little thread update.

Oil and filter change with new genuine plugs. Allgerman refresh kit should be here any time soon just waiting on 2 bushes from germany to arrive to complete the package.

F21 is on along with the 3" MAF and Saab red injectors currently running at 8 psi and seems better than stock need to sort out vagcom before i do any logs N75 is removed completely so thats thrown a code up.

F4 removed ready to be stripped

Half way there sort of

All swapped over

F4 vs F21 only very slight difference in comp wheel size

Just needs more boost :)

Well another addition to the GT28 build has arrived all for £75 shipped !!

ATP GT28 manifold which has been ceramic coated and only done 20K :)

Well been a little busy this week (and not finished there) the other two eagles landed at my door monday, so on tuesday i just had car in workshop did one tyre/balance on my breaks/dinner and the drive is so much better and more road feel than the conti's and i couldnt believe how quite they are aswell, Got my eccentric bolt and washer from tps for £12 today so got the alignment sorted i hope but the rear refresh kit from allgerman (fitted the kit a month ago) had a contaminated bush that needs replacing on one of the top arms and also one of the upright ones needs changing (ordering tomorrow so there here when im home) as the flush metal part flared and cracked slightly as a work colleague put the drift on the press the wrong way round so him interfering balls'd that up.

Yesterday had a few hicups whilst driving 3 or 4 times and it sort of felt as though the fuel pump was about to die (its still going but its in my mind its going to go) and we go to ireland late on sunday so ive bought a S4 fuel pump for £40 posted just to be on the safe side lol

And another piece of the puzzle has been purchased not got it yet as got to collect it when im back from ireland so not opened it up to get the crank out !!

Today has been a hectic day due to the trip to Ireland tomorrow, what i though was the fuel pump dying became more apparent it was something else as the days past (so now have a spare pump) the fault only really happened at low throttle whilst driving and when setting off or coming on throttle lightly, like a moron i didnt scan the car previously to ordering the pump so yesterday i popped the code reader out the glovebox on the car albeit theres 2 codes (1 being the N75 open circuit, this is disconnected and the other was MAF signal too low) i actually nearly ordered one as well beginning of the week) went scrapyard today picked up a 372 relay just to be sure aswell as aragorn said it could be this causing my fault but they had no MAF in there array of parts :( so last resort was an £84 bill of ECP for a bosch exchange unit oh well at least its a new one and not a potentially faulty one, all fitted and its idling alot better not road tested it yet as dont want to get the car manky just yet so that leads me to job number 2 :)

Got my self a auto glym clay kit so clayed the car and couldnt believe the crap this stuff gets off (mostly tar on the lower half) and finished off with the super resin and deep shine nows shes gleaming for the holiday trip :)

Wonder how many flys will be on the front by the time i reach holyhead lol

Shame the sun had gone in as couldnt really get good pics but the my iphones not the best camera lol

Nothing major but the heat from the xenons had started to bubble the headlight vinyl and there was a bit of muck entering the edges on one side and making it peel. Cant make my mind up which i prefer although the lights look shiney shiney now forgot how clear they were lol

Right turbo question.

I was thinking 2871R (0.64) but now im leaning towards the GT3071R-WG (0.64) ideally id like to brake the 400hp barrier but i doubt any of the above will do that which will be best to cut lag but keep top end power there ??

Or shall i just stick to the GT2871R (0.64) and see the outcome ??

I would go gt30. Personally 3076 as the lag difference between 71 and 76 isn't big. Also not a big difference in price from 2871. But that said, you didnt like the rs you were driving with big turbo so... If you won't like it I'll buy it from you :)

Are you wanting a number, or are you wanting a car thats actually nice to drive?

A tractable 350hp will make a far nicer drive than a peaky lagtastic 400+.

i dont think theres any point going for 2871, the turbine is too restrictive for the big 71 compressor, so you create more lag and cant really take proper advantage of it. Bigger housing just adds even more lag.

Either fit a GT2860RS or GTX2868, and aim for 350hp, or do it properly with a GT30. Ofcourse the problem with the GT30 is its then restricted by the T25 hotside and log manifold that you have, taking us back to the being unable to take full advantage of the turbo.

A 350hp turbo running 350hp will be much much nicer to drive than a 500hp turbo running 400 because theres so many restictions holding everything back.

Compact T25 though? Paul had one of those and it just didnt make the numbers did it?

I think he got 420 out of a full size T3 housing'd GT3071, but the smaller T25 setup would only do 380ish?

When people have fitted uprated new rods to the standard engines what boost is deemed safe compared with the standard rods?

I dream of 350bhp+ just not sure its worth the hassle or risk of me breaking it on a regular basis.

Anything over std would be my advice. 300 used to be deemed ok. But thats when these cars were new not 15 years old and 100k miles in. Std power cars bend rods

So is it due to the uprated boost pressure? I am sure when reading some US forums some guys are running 20+ psi where as a map on a K03 is normally nearer 16psi.

Torque is what kills rods and that's driven by boost. Spikey boost by small turbos is worse than progressive boost from a larger frame unit. Sadly its not an exact science

Yeah i read that last night, in there it talks of using the 76R turbo rather than jumping to the 3071R (al@pagparts) which is the turbo i was looking to go for.

Ive basically got a few options of turbo

1. 2871R (.64 or .84)
2. 2876R (.64 or .84)
3. 3071R-WG (.64 or .84)
4. X2863R (.64 or .84)
5. X2867R (.64 or .84)
6. X3067R (.64 or .84)

Leaning towards the last one abit now
