Hi all. Currently drive an A4 but I'm shopping for my first A5. I'd prefer the 3lt TDI quattro, my budget is about 10k, so for that price it's looking like an 07/08/09 plate. Couple of questions,
Why do some cars have all the buttons and knobs around the gear stick and some are on the dash,
As long as the service history is OK at what point is mileage starting to be getting to high, I'll be keeping the car for a while.
Finally, are there any things I should check for or test when buying an A5.
Cheers for your time.

The buttons around the gear stick are to operate the radio, CD etc when a SatNav is fitted. If no SatNav, then buttons are on the dash.

You need to buy on condition and service history. Watch out for possible MOT failure cars that have had the diesel particulate filter removed. Ask the owner specifically whether the engine management light has come on the last 6 months - as a possible sign of DPF failure. DPF's can be cleaned fairly cheaply.

Regarding the built in sat nav, how do you go about updates, as the tom tom I have I update regular for road changes etc. I'll be remapping the car when I get it so will just do the dpf delete at the same time.

Hi Mate, the buttons around the gearshift are if you have the Bang and Olufsen & and mostly with a sat nav system. Worth looking for one with it :)
Check though as some of the 2009-2012 had the MMi wheel but no sat nav

The early one is the 2G system and is updated by a DVD in the boot, 2009 on (i think) is the 3G and takes SD cards in the headunit.
2G with sat nav = controls around gearstick, Solid MMi wheel, front CD player (6 disc), rear Nav unit in boot for Nav disc
3G with sat nav = controls around gearstick, MMI wheel has joystick, front single CD, 2 x SD card slots (1 x nav)
3G without sat nav = controls around gearstick, Solid MMi wheel, single front cd player
You can buy year upgrades from Audi and/or there is threads about how to update them too.

3.0TDi's a great choice too :)

I think it goes like this:

3G Basic with sat nav = controls around gearstick, Solid MMI wheel, single front cd player, 2 x SD card Slots, Bluetooth, Voice Control (DAB, AMI & Reverse Camera Optional)
3G High with sat nav = High Definition maps, controls around gearstick, MMI wheel has joystick, front single DVD, 2 x SD card slots , Hard disk storage for maps and MP3 music, Voice Control (DAB, AMI, Digital TV & Reverse Camera Optional)

I Stand corrected beemerboy :keule:lol

looks like all the 2009> MMi 3G have sat nav, just different versions. Even the porfessionals get it wrong though haha, http://www.fiscon-mobile.eu/products/audi_mmi.php

Either way, its worth looking for any of the versions with the controls to give you B&O and a version of sat nav ;)
Best way is still to mess with it when you inspect the car...
