I am getting round to selling my old A3 2.0T and want to give the whole car a deep clean, this includes the exhaust tips.

I have been using autosol on my new S3 and that's fine but my old exhaust tips have so much carbon encrusted on them it just wont shift.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to shift the most stubborn carbon deposits of the tips?

Cheers

I have the problem on my Type-R FN2
Autosol metal polish is superb for that, not too aggresive and very easy to use.

Try your autosol with grade 00 wire wool (fine or extra fine)and that should help.......just make sure it is the fine or extra fine!

Get some coke and wire wool.

Or try some autofinesse mercury metal polish

I would add to the above suggestions to using a wheel cleaner spray on the exhaust tips - would suggest using something like wonder wheels if it's really baked on. You will be surprised how much it takes off - it will then make it a much easier job to get the rest of the baked on crud off with a metal polish as above.

Also tar remover is usally very strong, and could see if iron x would bring anything off

Based on advice from other people on the forum, I've been using WD40 on mine. Works a treat.

Even if it doesn't, you're only a cheap can of spray down.

Tooth paste and brillo pads also work a treat.

Did this earlier, looks mint! Really impressed considering the exhaust is 11 years old and done over 100k :) Would have took picture, but too embarrassed ;)

Glad it worked for you, just don't let the S3 exhausts get into the same state :)

Yup, I'm cleaning mine regularly and hoping they never get into a state.
