Will a remap or improving the cars performance damage the gearbox or other running parts?

It all depends on what company is doing it and if it is over tuned or not. Use a decent company and get it serviced when required and it should be fine.

I had Celtic tuning do my Merc and he gearbox started to show problems, after about 2000 miles it started to play up, searching the gears and getting stuck in 3rd.

as above all depends on what condition your car is before the map

The company doing it, the condition of your car, how you drive the car, how much extra power you try to squeeze from the car etc etc the list goes on. Your question is so vague its like asking someone if eating food is bad for you. It all depends!

56k on the clock, 3.0 tdi quattro

Just looking for a bit more power, exhaust, map, intercooler maybe.

This is my concern, wanting the car remapped but my gearbox is currently under warranty after replacement, my fear that any remap would void warranty

remaps bring out impending problems.
get a switchable map that's undetectable

Why on earth are you taking advice on your car when you haven't given people any information about the car in the first place?!?

I can see you gave some details further down, but that's really a "how long is a piece of string question" without that info.

Any TDI + auto box is a tougher remap as the TDI remaps usually focus on unleashing a LOT more torque at the lower revs that manufacturers normally tune out specifically to protect components.

If you remap a manual TDI and then drive it carefully (mostly just get the clutch ALL the way out before giving it the beans), then you can protect the clutch and put another 100k on the car without a problem.

If it is a torque converter auto and you drive the car aggressively, then it will put a lot more strain on the clutch.

If it is a DSG, then you're in slightly unexplored territory as they're not known for their torque prowess, but the modern DSG's are beign put in everything up to the 300lb/ft+ TDI's (just not the BiTDI / V8 TDI's).

If it is a CVT auto (multitronic), then it will usually do the gearbox a lot of damage fairly quickly.

Audi have never put a multitronic in a quattro and I think the TDI spec DSG's are too new to have been put in a C6 A6, so yours is probably the torque converter....

I'm not going to answer your question as it is a risky one with any auto... but if you were going to, stick to a repuable company, that does the remap specifically for your engine + gearbox combo and only as a hot-swappable module, so you don't lose the warranty as there's a decent chance you'll need it.

This is the kind of straight answer I was looking for, the car is pretty fast as it is, and in my Mercedes, the gearbox was starting to play up after the map, so I dont want a repeat performance of that. So for now I will keep it as it is.

Hi,
I contacted ZF to see what the max torque the gearbox would take for my car a 2005 A6 Quattro 3.0TDI Auto fitted with a ZF6HP19A gearbox code GZW.
This is the reply.
" You vehicle will probably be fitted with the 09L Gearbox. These are rated to about 500Nm. I would not recommend an aggressive map on the gearbox as you run the risk of snapping the turbine shaft."
As the std car is rated at 450Nm I decided it wasn't worth the risk for a relatively low increase in torque + the car has done 112,000 miles. Iv'e decided instead to have the gearbox serviced at Bristol transmissions as the changes are a little bit harsh at times.
