Looking at a1 black edition for the mrs should I go for the 2.0 or 1.6 tdi or 1.4 tfsi I have the a3 2.0 tdi and I think that'll do for her.

1.6 TDI is underpowered and economy figures seem to be way off claimed. Also has the tiresome DPF re-gen feature.

2.0 TDI is lovely engine. Quick, lots of torque and good economy. I know people get 60 mpg out of it regularly while still having performance that is a bit under the radar.

1.4 TFSI (185) - great engine, sounds cool with the turbo and supercharger. S-Tronic makes it super quick - had a lot of fun when I owned one. Just swapped it for an S3 as wanted a bit more power. Economy is OK too. Used to get mid 30's day to day and low 40's on a run.

Don't touch the 1.6, as mentioned, horribly underpowered. I have it in a loan car now and it's driving me nuts! My Mrs just sold her Mini One D 1.6 TDI and that was a peach of an engine, BMW really got it right, the VAG equivalent is woeful!

My partner has the A1 1.6, does short journeys 6 miles round trip to work and back Town driving and obviously more use at weekend, not had a issue with DPF at all.

Speed, it's not rapid by any stretch ( my cars a S3 so speed is covered there ). Engine does however pull well and it's low down power, on reality it probably feels faster then it is. By far not the slowest hatch around, depends if you want speed / economy.

Touching on economy, it's brilliant. Nothing super scientific but it's been very good on long trips to London, Manchester, etc.

The A1 is a nice motor, for a girl. I don't think the 1.6 tdi would be a bad call as it's a small and light car but I'd say the 2.0 would be much nicer to drive.

I certainly don't get 60mpg in my 2.0 a4 but I am hauling around wide 19s

Yer obviously quicker but less overall mpg but still high so see where your coming from.

Now can't agree with you that's it's a nice motor for a girl at all!

I've got to share it for a few weeks while I'm between S3's so I'm claiming it's not a girly car!

I think the A1 is a great looking car and i will be having a straight fight between the A4 saloon black edition and the A1 depending on what car the Mrs end up with ( she has a 4x4 ) but i can't help the nagging feeling of the A1 is not a blokes car but i do like it.

Depends but I think the A1 is quite a aggressive car. It doesn't bother me when I drive my partners car.

I know what you mean, when you see it close up it's bigger than you think and the black edition looks very aggressive, if i could find one withsuper sport seats and a panoramic roof i think that would sway my decision :) and if i want to be sensible it would cover my needs.

Maybe too late now but for anyone else looking: get the 1.4 TFSI (185) - great engine, sounds cool with the turbo and supercharger. 7-speed DSG makes it super quick and frugal...
