Hello gents,

Thought this would be an interesting thread to start with regards to performance figures for the S3. As some of you may know the Racelogic performance box / vbox is the industry standard for testing performance with manufacturers, press and the racing industry using this device to record times. This thread is for progress of the 8V S3 and will be filled with vbox charts/displays/videos and 1/4m time slips. Anything other than a vbox display or a 1/4m time slip will not be allowed in this thread, I want to keep the data as accurate as I can.

To start off, I have a 2014 Audi S3, completely standard at the moment running nothing other than Momentum 99 Octane Fuel, the car is full weight and is as it was delivered by the manufacturer.

The vbox display when I tested 0-60/0-100mph on private ground this morning showed this....

To drill down further at the hundredths of a second, I plotted the data in the performance tools graph and the results for 0-60/0-100mph were...

0-60mph = 4.25s
0-100mph = 10.45s

The temperature on testing was 16c, fuel load was 1/2 tank and the road was as flat as a pancake, verifiable by the height chart in the display...

Gradient shows a starting height of 72.75m and a finishing height of 72.35m. 40cm difference over the space of 293m which gives a gradient of 0.13% (0.4m/293.40m x 100 = 0.13%). In manufacturer/magazine/race based testing the max gradient allowable over a run is 3% so this run above at 0.13% is as flat as a pancake. Numbers could be slightly better if I were to use a slightly more favourable section of runway that gets me closer to that 3%, but for me, I will use the same section of runway for all my testing so I can compare like for like. 1 foot rollout in the settings is off (Verifiable by graph display anyway)

Audi quote 0-100km/h in the official documentation as 4.8secs but this is 0-62.14mph, not 0-60...

The same run, now plotted in km/h instead.....

0-100km/h = 4.50 (Which is 0.3secs quicker than Audi officially quote)

Video...

I will update this thread again when I carry out modifications to note the progress:thumbsup:

I like stuff like this, proper logging kit which allows consistency (can't control the weather though) and decent analysis. Would be interesting to compare as much as possible a fully dry run and a fully wet run.
Not bad for a stock machine.

Keep it coming please.

Very interesting, does it come out at 4.25 or 4.5 after repeated runs then? That's a seriously quick car, wonder if same applies to manual ( with good launch )

The 4.25 to 60 was the best of 3 runs, but the others were within 1/10 of this at 4.28 and 4.31. The Launch control DSG is very repeatable. I'm sure with colder temps and a stickier bit of tarmac there may even be a little more in it. Manual will show a greater spread, perhaps upto 1/2 second best to worst but with a good driver behind the wheel I see no reason why a manual car couldn't get close to the times I have.

Yes, I am very happy with this for stock performance. Lightweight/Launch/DSG and a decent amount of power, the car is always going to perform well.

I think the performance is staggering for the cost of the car with up to 5years of warranty, not only that it can be used every day as a family hatchback. Not so many years ago 0-100 in around 10s was a very select few cars costing comparatively way more.

Good work.

Any chance of the same, but without Launch Control?

Thanks

Yes, I can give it a bash but will no doubt be a good second slower as the lag between idle and when it comes on boost is going to hurt big time. Not sure the relevance though as even in a manual car without launch control, you would up the revs to 3-4000 and drop the clutch in order to get round the idle-turbo spool revs time delay. Will give it a go next time

Don't be afraid to use Launch control though, I've had the car only a few weeks and probably in the region of 15 launches already. I got through about 250 on my TTRS before so they are pretty much bullet proof these days and there's nothing in the manual or an inhibit feature so if it breaks, it's under warranty

Off the line without Launch Control (in "S" or "M") from 0 - 30mph I would be particularly interested in, as this is a situation when trying to pull out across traffic, at a very busy junction.

At least in a manual box, as you say, you could rev and slightly slip the clutch to get across the busy junction!

Not having the steering "straight" would preclude LC, so it's quite a relevant everyday event!

How many miles run in before your first launch then?

Mines is a 3 month old ex demo so I imagine it will have been abused from day one to be honest. Couldn't really tell you other than it had 2500 on the clock when I picked it up and it was launched within 10 mins.

Ex demo cars do make for quick cars, the harder you run them in, generally the quicker in the long run they will be. I always change cars well before warranty expires so buying ex demo this time around doesn't bother me.

lets hope we get some manual results too, i reckon will be high 4s maybe

Great thread Leo. I'll dust off my vbox Sport once my car has a few more miles under its belt. Will be interesting to see whether there's a material difference in performance between the body styles (mine's a saloon) - can't think that there will be and in any event probably unreliable given delta in conditions between locations. I'm impressed with your stock car's times. It is actually quite a quick car this s3.

I'd be impressed with anyhting that begins with 4 from a manual. I reckon 5.x more likely: There's a challenge!:sm4:

Ive done a 12.7@105mph at York raceway back in April.

Spoke to my tuner the other day and theres some big stuff happening soon on this engine and I cant wait. Safe to say 7 secs to a hundred isn't too far in the distance :)

And its inters this weekend and Revo will have there mk7 R running down the strip with there beta file, think there hoping for 11's. My car will be on the scorpion stand on the sunday.

Aren't the 8Vs with 6-speed S-Tronic Launch Control factory limited to 200 launches before function is disabled permanently?

Internet hearsay, no reference of this in any documentation. Some people told me this when I was launching my TTRS so often but 200 come and went and I had well over 250 launches on it before I sold it and it was still going strong. I kept track of the number of launches by the amount of drag strip time slips I had plus personal use, vbox runs etc.

New Gen cars may be different of course but if there is, I'm sure the counter can be reset by the tuners, there will be a way around.

This is the best attitude to a new car I've ever seen, love it! Driving an s3 how you are meant to drive one.
Have to agree aswell in my old s3 manual I regularly used to launch it 3k rpm when needed and side step the clutch.
Good thread .

Any way you can plot or show max boost?

Mine is a manual, horsed from 9 miles old (always wait for oil temp to come up). MTM tuning box at 800 mile and still i swear it its still getting quicker!!

So when I pickup my new one just drive it like my S3 now then?

That used to be the way Subaru advised me to get rid of clutch judder on the good old Impreza turbos..........give it some revs, drop the clutch and clean the plates! Compared to how Audi test drivers evaluate the car in development no road user will ever trash a car as hard as they do. People used to be scared of buying ex-demos but they can be the best deals, engines are designed to rev and they prefer revs than dawdling.

Excellent stuff. Really great thread. 0-60mph = 4.25s ; 0-100mph = 10.45s. That's really impressive,

At least we'll know soon enouth if the DSG is limited to 200 runs. I've not used mine that much since I know it may be true

I couldn't careless about the limited launches tuners will get around it... simple as that really! Ive done loads

I was told by my dealer that it does exist, I think he said 250. I assume If you do more under warranty the excuses will come from Audi if something goes wrong.

I went on a Audi event at Outlon park, tried S3, S5, SQ5, RS4 and RS6 - all had launch disabled 😒

Finished today with a 1/4m time of 11.90 which was enough for quickest car of the day outright and puts me up into 4th overall in the 2.0t hall of fame leaderboard :thumbs up:

Hold on...your car is stock right? Those are some crazy *** figures!

Completely stock hardware yes.

Just a DTUK tuning box with a little fine tweaking to my taste

Its now time to go full stage 2 and aim for an 11.49

Have you had any errors (HD1) with the DTUK box?

No, the car has not had any hiccups, no hesitations, no misfiring, no error codes or engine management lights. TD1 is not an issue.

It's had around 65 launches on the gearbox now and the car is running sweet.

Cool thread! Impressive stats! Im not familiar with the whole 'tuning box' thingy. Can someone explain to me how this works in terms of invalidating warranty? Having seen this post I think it would be worth the extra money but i'm a little concerned what will happen when it goes in for its service - surely they can spot you have something plugged into it?

Also, do you have to inform your insurer? Im guessing so?

Also, does anyone know where you can get this DTUK box installed in the south east?

Appreciate any responses to this message. Keep up the good work!

If you go onto the DTUK website there's a bunch of videos on how to put it in. Looks easy, plug and play basically, 5 min job. And they also state that it does not give off any error messages, TD1, so you will be fine when it goes in for service. All you have to do is disconnect the box and back to original.

it's a bit more than 5 minutes though on the 8V chassis. You have to take off (or the way I did it, take out the screws on the front edge and squeeze your hand in) the floor pan below the engine to access one of the connectors. Takes about half hour as you need to jack the front side up (driver side if you're interested)

Nawaid....... where are the S3 install links/videos? I can't seem to find them ;(
