Had my S3 for four months and covered 7,000 miles...

Good

- Averaged 33.6 mpg over the 7k and regularly get 35 to 40mpg on long lazy runs. Really good.
- Performance is excellent and there's not much on the road that can keep up with the car in real world terms
- Steering is best I have experienced in an Audi product for a long time
- Discreet looks I think is a bonus when you're on the road and parked up. Must admit though, I wish the S3 looked a bit meaner. I had pondered a SB, but they look too much like an estate for my liking and the saloon isn't my thing really. Still, it's an A3, not a sports car... I need to remember that!
- Tyre wear has been good, so I'm thinking I will probably stretch the continentals to 20k if I can
- Gearbox is much better than the double clutchers I have had before in TT's. Doesn't try to down change at low revs so much and is much smoother
- No idea why, but after I past about 4k the car started sounding better and now if I lift off quickly I get a nice low tone whump sound. Love that.
- No faults as such, but see 'bad' below for the gripes

Bad

- Front seats I have got used to, but they don't adjust the way they should and I have been unable to find a completely comfortable driving position
- Steering wheel sits too high as the amount of adjustment is pitiful, hence it doesn't help the driving experience for me
- Audi Sound System was a mistake I made when ordering, should have gone B&O. My sisters Ford has better sound quality than my car!
- Gear change paddles are pants. Almost no feel when you press them. The previous versions Audi were fitting were much better
- Stupid 12v socket that lights up like an 80's fag lighter. Looks really out of place IMO
- Lag you occasionally get as the turbo fills its lungs can be annoying

Ugly

- The throttle pedal is dreadful. I find on any journey of more than an hour I fatigue in my right leg. Why oh why did Audi dropped the hinged from the floor pedal design? I now have a pair of 'driving boots', in other words, I wear a certain pair of healed boots when doing longer journeys that make it easier to balance my foot and avoid fatigue. Anyway, it really impedes on the pleasure of driving the car for me.

Overall

I'm happy but not over the moon with my S3. It looks good, but not amazing. It's fast, but not expensive to run. On the right road it's engaging and when I want to 'just get there' it's happy to poodle along and sip the petrol. The car is however let down by a few minor things that really shouldn't be there on such a car. Would I recommend one? Yes, but only because there's no much else that is actually better in the same class of vehicle. I am sitting on the fence until the RS3 comes along and I am hoping that I will want to order one. Else I will probably raid the piggy bank and buy an RS4.

Thanks for the write-up. Always good to hear actual owners thoughts on the car. I will hopefully start to make my own thoughts known when I get mine this week...

Good write up SilureMark. :)

Agree about the throttle pedal.....the fall out of the MQB platform to save on cost I'm led to believe.

Really struggle to modulate throttle smoothly when driving my S3 after a few weeks of driving my daily driver (F30 3-Series) which has the organ style throttle.

Surely you have cruise control to overcome fatigue on long journeys?

My thoughts too, that what I do on freeways, set to cruise, and your feet stays flat on the floor just behind the pedals just in case you have to suddenly jump on the brakes to to press the accelerator for an over take.

Good read, what fuel are you using? Did you use the same fuel?

I've never driven a car with a floor hinged throttle I've always had them like it is now I can't see how a floor hinged throttle would be any better

You can get pebbles and gravel stuck behind the floor mounted pedal, as I found out.

Twice. When I needed poweeeerrrrrr.

Have to agree with SilureMark about the throttle pedal. I made reference to the difficulty I had with seating position in the thread here, but I'm now not so sure it's a seating issue, rather than a throttle pedal issue. Coming from two Leon Cupra's with floor mounted pedals, I am beginning to think it's the pedal/pivot angle that's causing my nerve problem. I'm off to see a physio shortly, so will see what he thinks.

Off topic, but related to my post in the thread above, the car is finally back at the dealer today for the window rattle. When I took the Master Tech out, he was virtually convinced it was a door catch/mechanism issue - but at least he heard it :) (it's intermittent). We shall see.....

Please do post exactly what was done to fix the rattle as I have the same thing (less so now that the weather has cooled down).
(Apologies to SilureMark for this slight hijack! Good review btw)

Totally agree with you there, but I guess it is all about what you are used to. The way I look at it though is that floor hinged throttle pedals seem to be of the past, I remember the VW beetle having them.

Good review and I agree with what you say about the throttle. The mpg is surprisingly good and is improving after 7k. I usually average about 34mpg too. As for pedal discomfort I have a pair of shoes with the same curved heel but find cruise control is the best solution on a long run. Using that and the digital speed display in the DIS is great for going through the average speed cameras that seem to be everywhere these days. Generally happy overall with mine. The Estoril Blue looks discreet and doesn't attract the attention of plod on the motorway (I hope!) it seems. Can't get the bikes in the back like I used to on my old A4 Avant but use Thule roof bars and carriers instead. Only downside to that is the loud wind noise which seems to transmit through the pano roof glass and I've marked the silver roof bars on both sides (ouch) so any offers on how to restore them to new would be greatly appreciated guys.

I honestly can't see the fuss with the throttle, I've been on a test drive today and thought it was perfect, but then again my current car and last car had the same sort of pedal

Great review Mark, I also don't like the throttle pedal position and it makes my leg ache.

Great review. The one niggle I'd add is the speedo. Only 1000 miles in but struggling to get used to the double spacing at the start. The number of times I have thought I was doing 40 and was only doing 35. It's fooling me in to driving slow!

Apologies for thread drift:
