Hi all

Not sure how to describe this but I'm getting a banging noise when going over bumps, sounds like its coming from the boot

I've had the spare wheel and tools out and made no difference, thought it was the boot floor banging when jumping up and down but not the case.

Does anyone have any other ideas, as its driving me crazy.

Thanks.

Sorry I forgot to say the trim on each side of the boot where the door is to access the amp make the same kind of noise when I bang it so not sure if it could be that, seems quite flimsy and noisy.

Is the battery secure? If it's a bang and not a thump, it must be rather heavy. Does it handle ok, shocks might be weak?

Hi. Thanks for the reply. The battery seems secure. Its not a loud banging, but can be easily heard from drivers seat.

Handling seems fine, the car is only 2 years old and done 20k, will take it into Audi if I can't find the cause soon, hitting the side walls in the boot makes the same kind of noise

I had a similar issue, and suspected the noise was coming from the boot in my 2010....turns out that adjusting the door striker has cured it in my case. The noise was coming from around the passenger rear pillar when listening from the drivers seat.

Hi. That's interesting as the noise does appear to be coming from the same place, going to fold seats down tomorrow as well to ensure its not them. Is it easy to adjust the door striker?

Check that the parcel shelf isn't banging on the frame underneath it,i had in a vw bora so might be worth checking even just to eliminate it:thumbs up:

Must say, slightly off topic but I thought it was strange to find my battery in the boot. It was in the boot of my BMW but it's RWD

Ha Ha, what a silly person - well, when I first got my S4, the first thing I checked was the space in the boot for a full sized wheel - yes, just like you, there was a battery in there!

Thanks. Def not the parcel shelf, its a saloon so don't have one as such. I will check the exhaust tomorrow and see if I can rattle it a little. I must admit I wasn't expecting the battery in the boot, only had the car a couple of weeks so its all a bit new.

Haha I'm a silly person, that's nice :)

Hi all. Been looking into this more and found two issues, covers on the boot springs are banging, lined the inside and seems better, however I think the main noise is coming from the boot walls, when slightly tapping the inside walls of the boot they are very hollow and make quite a noise, does anyone else's do this? Seems a bit poor

Slightly off topic but the battery in the boot is a great idea. Not much room to put it in the engine compartment anyway when there is a 3.0 V6 engine there and helps the weight distribution. Also with a 110Ah battery on the 3.0 TDI it makes life a lot more easy if it has to be replaced.

Yes mine sounds hollow too and i refer to my car as a "rattle box" .
So much rattle between plastic trim & leather/centre arm rest/door armrest/rear centre arm rest, gear gaitor..etc
my e46 was solid compared to this one....

I have a similar noise coming from my B8 every time I brake or go round corners. Sounds like plastic sliding from side-to-side and coming from underneath the drivers seat (at least that's where it sounds like).
The only thing I can think of is the under seat air duct, maybe it has flaps inside that are loose.
Let me know how you get on, its so annoying.

I have tried a few things but still no luck. My noise if def coming from the boot area, or at least it sounds like it. I think it might be the very badly fitting side carpet in the boot as its got a huge gap behind it and the walls rattle and knock if you slightly touch them. Will pad the insides tonight and see if that helps.

I was thinking of putting dynomat on those side walls. Looking forward for solutions. I've read somewhere that the rear shelf makes some noises as well and people fixed it with dynomat.

I havent got any dynomat, but will be putting some laminate floor underlay behind the boot walls to pack out the gap and hopefully stop the banging noise when going over bumps, the gap is quite big and I think its the walls themselves that bang rather than them hitting anything.

I could be the rear shelf, not sure how you would stop this banging in saloon as it appears to be static metal, so not sure how to get in it or where it could be banging.

Last week I actually dynomatted the rear shelf as I was getting a lot of vibration from the sub.
Loads better with the dynomat, and at the same time I replaced the stock sub with a JL Audio 10" :)
The fabric parcel shelf comes off by first removing the pillar covers. He's a guide on how to remove it, be prepared to buy new speaker grilles though, as they break sooooo easily:

I padded inside the boot walls last night and still the same, not sure where it could be coming from but its quite Loud, like hitting a parcel shelf hard each time you go over bump. Might have to take it to Audi soon.
