Can anyone help having a bit of trouble with my 80 2.0 8v.
It has an idle problem just won't basically keeps stalling.
Things done-
New ISV fitted.
Spark plugs new
Distributer cap new.
Ok when running no problems just idling.
Fuel is getting to the tower(maf sensor) sometimes it takes a bit of turning on and off to get the fuel pumped through to start but if it has been running it will start first time normally.
Thinking about new fuel filter? and giving it a clean through with some engine cleaner like Redex.
Any help would be cool thanks.

does the car rev up and down slightly(jerking) when it is just ticking over? sometimes shake?

I had a 2ltr 8v that did the same, some times stalling when sitting in traffic, was ok at speed though.

does your car do this all the time, mine only did this occasionally.

A audi mechanic said to me it could be a Idol timing sensor, although never got my car looked at because it went to Audi Heaven before i got chance :(

The car just will not idle take your foot off and it idles right down to ****** all the stops.:(
When going along its fine if you keep the revs up, pull up at a junction with too higher gear and it stalls.
Getting used to the left foot breaking now and reving with my right.
Goes really well otherwise nice sound with the sports exhaust and pulls well.

When you operate the throttle linkage by hand, does it "click" as you start opening the throttle? The click is the microswitch, which tells the isv to start working, if it's set up wrong, isv won't work.
Also could have a build up of 'grime' inside the throttle body, it would help if you clean this out. You might have an idle screw that can be adjusted, it is not the throttle position screw (and locknut). Will be a brass screw that controls an air gallery that bypasses the throttle, turn anticlockwise to increase idle. This could be gunged up too!

Thanks for the help will try all the above and post results:beerchug:
Went out in it today goes so well when running,:) I am sure it has more power than standard with the full stainless on it. No expert just feels more than the 122bhp(don't quote me on that though) that it should be.

If you haven't cured the problem yet, check every thing in the inlet side of things for a possible air leak. They can play havock with the ISV. Did you fit a new ISV or second hand? If its working you should be able to feel it vibrate slightly when truning the ignition on it will also make a kind of buzz tick noise. Alternatively is the engine getting enough fuel pressure? Could the main or lift fuel pumps be defective? If they are the same pumps as fitted to a late MK 2 Golf GTi I have a second hand one of each that you could have for £10, the main pump I only have the insert (important bit) not the case. You could crossreference the part no.s on GSF's web page or some thing to fine out. Any way good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

my abk 2ltr 8 valve with similar problems, all was well after had the ECU remanufactured at a cost of approx £300. also be sure your spark plugs have the double spark thingys. moneys tight here too peace

Ok had the nice man from the AA out today broke down no fuel Doh!!:keule:
Then the battery went flat buggering **** mittens.
He got it going and tried to get the car to idle(good luck) he found out the problem though.
Something called "After warm up regulator" part of the air flow/ fuel meter could be the whole air flow meter though.
Does anyone know a good place to get a second hand one?
Thanks all above for kind help.

Thanks for the helps lads:arco:
Got an new Fuel/air flow meter, runs good now.
We now idle:rockwoot: no more left foot braking.

How much did the fuel/air flow meter cost you as i think i need to get 1 for my 91 80 SE ( similar prob's to your's).

Dave.

Got my maf unit from a mechnic mate, but here is a very good place in Bristol that have a big amount of gear in stock and are very good to deal with.
