I'm once again looking at A3 tdi's. Prefer either 1.9 105bhp or 2.0 140bhp. Budget is £6k max. Looking at a few on auto trader and noticed a few subtle changes between updates (grills, steering wheel etc) but could really do with a used buyers guide on what to look out for. Btw, ideally looking for a totally standard car to personalise. Thanks in advance

The best A3 to go for would be a 2006 onwards A3 2.0L TDi S Line 140bhp
Or a A3 TDi S Line Quattro 170bhp

Bose surround sound is a nice optional extra to look out for along with heated seats and rear parking sensors.

Double Din stereo would also be ideal if you wish to change to a RSN-E or similar later.

Considering your budget of 6k, you could probably get a decent A3 with a few extras on a 06 - 07 reg

i agree with the above, a 2006 A3 2.0 TDI S-Line is probably the best one to start with... if you can get one with xenons that get that as all the other stuff is easily retrofitted including the seats... however on the factory xenon models you get auto levelling and washers all in so its a much better deal.
the 1.9 engine is noisy and slow.

Many thanks for the feed back fellas.
Quatro is deffo not on the wish list.

Doesnt seem to be many 2006 year S line without galactic mileage around here ....

Interesting to hear bout noisy and slow 1.9's

Once again thanks for your input.

Just to add, my ideal car should be light/dark grey or silver ... Sorry don't know the audi colours ... And under 100000 k miles ideally 85k ish.
Not trying to turn this into a find me a car thread ! Lol!! Just looking at what I should be looking out for eg: dodgy gearbox, clutch, suspension issues, early signs of rust etc, etc.

I have a 2009 Audi A3 Sportback 1.9 TDIe - it's very much slow and a little noisy, but the reality is it was made for economy which it certainly lives up to its end of the bargain for me. The issue I had when I was buying is looking for a low mileage example (got mine on 53,000) which in the space of a year and a half jumped up to 93,000. I now wish I bought a higher mileage example for much, much cheaper!

In terms of years to be looking for, big grill from 2005 onwards and from 2008 (58) onwards you get the significant change with the new headlights, bumper, revised interior and if you're looking at the Sportback, LED rear lights.

Go on Service History and how well it's been looked after rather than mileage.

If a cars done over 100k but been serviced at the right intervals, belts done, all stamped up to date and been looked after, it'll be a much buy than one that's done 70k but has missed services and had a pretty rough life.

Nice one dany. It's not all about speed performance for me but A little bit of refinement would be good. Have you had to do much in the time you've had the car ?

Good point.

Currently I have a 207 hdi, gt performance is acceptable for what it is economy is Superb. Equipment levels are great and Although its pretty well put together by French standards it's not exactly in the same league as a German build.

Previous to the pug I had a mk4 golf which seen me to 192k miles with no major issues... Sold with original turbo, gearbox mint interior etc at 192k miles.

My pug I bought 18 months ago but I really don't see it lasting 10 years lol !!!
Hence the itch for a smallish well built hatch that should last me a good while.

Well mate, to be honest not a lot apart from the timing belt as per the service schedule and various services in line with my mileage. Apart from that, nothing has gone wrong and I wouldn't expect it to. I do have the BLS engine however and not the BXE engine. Google is your friend on that one, stay away from it if you do go down the road of the 1.9. Also, my road tax is £30.00 a year :).

Cambelt, water pump, dual mass fly wheel and turbo are the main things to look out for.

I believe cambelt and waterpump should be done around 80k. Dual mass flywheel can easily be checked on a manual by dipping in the clutch, if you hear a grinding noise then it will need changing sometime soon. On a DSG, a rattling noise in P and N is a sign.

Thanks for the heads up hollow but im after a three door.

had a look at a few over the weekend.... christ, there's some ***** about!!

the first i looked at was local to my partners house ...
i was a bit wary from the pics that it looked as though it had a different colour near side quarter panel.
From what i could see as i arrived first impressions were good... however, my suspensions were proved correct about the paint...plus general wear and tear were not good ...it also had 6 air fresheners dotted about the interior .... at least the seller admited the previous owner was a smoker... heres the car ...
