Good afternoon,
So last day of our two week honeymoon started well at 6am leaving Austria to drive north to the Dunkirk ferry crossing. First 150 miles down and we are cruise controlling the autobahn at 85mph when the engine starts to loose power, so I turn off cruise and drop it out of gear to see the engine immediately stall. Thankfully we have European breakdown cover so we put in a call and are fairly quickly picked up and taken to a garage.
From here the service level started dropping as the mechanic never showed up and instead we were picked up again and taken to the next down to get a diagnosis, upon removing the engine cover and timing belt cover it appears that the water-pump seized or failed causing the timing belt to snap and thus ending our travels.
Thankfully we are safe and back via plane in the UK but I am awaiting the costs for diagnosing the car on a Sunday and then an ETA for getting the car returned to the UK too.
I'm feeling quite out of love with the car right now, but at some point I will need to decide what to do, I am thinking reconditioned engine with warranty and run it for a bit, any other options worth considering?

Feel for you mate, what a nightmare.
It's total pot luck as to engine damage when a cam belt snaps. I've known of belts to snap at cruising speeds & amazingly not do any damage or just bend a valve or two!, but I've also known them to snap at idle & wreck valves, pistons. You may be lucky, but prepare for the worse.
Out of interest when was the belt & water pump changed last?

Hey thanks for the feedback, yes I think you're right it is pot luck so I'll focus on getting the car back to the UK first. The Audi garage where it is at the moment have raised an invoice for the mobile mechanic's time at £210! Had I have known that it was being charged by the minute I would have insisted we leave the garage seconds after being shown the damage, very cheeky.
I bought the car 11 months ago and it came with a receipt for the cambelt being done about 15k miles ago, I'll dig it out tonight as I think it mentioned doing the waterpump, it is however unlikely the work is still warranted for this amount of time passed though.
Has anyone bought a reconditioned engine before, any recommendations where to get one from?

All parts have 12 months warranty but normally need to be fitted by a garage to keep the warranty on it.

Bad enough breaking down, never mind in foreign grounds.
I hope u love ur audi enough to put another engine in, im sure u do :kissmyrings:
Good luck

Good morning, I didn't have time to find the invoice but it was almost definitely done over a year ago now, rubbish!
I'm really not in love with this particular Audi right now but I will put another engine in and run it for a bit as we are trying to move house so I need funds at the ready! I'd love a brand new car but that can wait for another day. All happening on my birthday month too, boo!

Evening, my mechanic has now looked over the top of my engine, rocker cover off and camshaft removed and I need to order the following: timing belt kit, water pump (and thermostat), auxiliary belts, and hydraulic lifters / tappets.
EuroCarParts sell all of this but any other recommendations where I should buy this all for a rock bottom price? Cheers

Cheers they do most bits, but the total for everything I'm looking from GSF is £282, it's £192 from Euro Car Parts, I think the hydraulic lifters are a bit expensive there so I am waiting on a quote back from Volkswagen Spares to see if it works out better to split the order between two companies.

Fitted the tappets and timing belt this eve and the car sounds like a bag of nails, so bent valves galore. Any cost effective pointers on the best route for repair? I could get new valves only, or a whole new cylinder head and transfer my injectors over, or a used engine.
Suggestions welcome

You really need to get the head off to see what damage has been done to the head/ pistons.

Have you tried CarParts4Less?

www.carparts4less.co.uk

Basically Euro Car Parts but at discounted rates. I've heard it's the same company but then a ECP Employee told me it wasn't. Websites are almost identical though, so very odd.

I've ordered a lot of stuff from Car Parts 4 Less and ECP, and the boxes are always the same. Probably the same company IMO.

This happened to me on my 1.9

I spent £700 on parts alone, inc timing belt water pump etc, new cam, all new valves and followers, head gasket set, oil and injectors seals and new bolts. (Didn't need the injector seals if you want them)

It cost me another fair few hundred quid to get it all done too. So I know how you feel.

I also didn't have the money as I'm moving house next month too, so just had to whack it on the credit card last minute, but it's life mate.
