Saving a white 3.0 quattro build thread.

throw the 3.0 away and do as i did .... 2.7t :D

if i knew what i know now i would of stuck a 2.7t in from the start using a A6 Allroad as a donor

i put up a tread in 2012

http://www.audi-sport.net/xf/threads/blown-3-0-v6-possible-alternatives.160927/

and at the time i did do alot of searches on the 2.7t going in but everything i found was saying as the B5 S4 wasnt canbus nothing would would work, everything would need modding etc etc, but lately ive read quite a few threads of putting the 2.7t in using all the electrics from the A6 and i would of had a perfect car to start with the blown 3.0 as you use the B6 3.0 rads, pipes, aircon etc etc when doing the conversion. shame really :( and as you can see from the thread i would of had it in in no time at all :(

like i say its only the family car and i will just have to get my **** in gear and finish my 400bhp+ rear wheel drive mk3 Astra ;)

You don't need all the wiring from the a6 what you have is fine but yea I'm sure that astra will keep you happy lol

do you have a build thread for yours? i do keep looking into it but just cant justify spending the money when this has a perfectly good runner. but if it ever dies ;)

just on one of those lonley ebay nights at work on the nightshift browsing though i came accross a bit of an impulse buy. its something i had been looking into on other lonely nightshifts and had got the jist of whats required to fit. Tiptronic steering wheel buttons :) i would like a full MFSW but no way im paying the pricetag attached to them!

picked up a Audi S8 D2 tiptronic steering wheel for the mighty sum of £50 including delivery

its got a few scratches to the badge but overall its in great condition, alot less wear than mine

as mines origionally a SE its got the great big boring 4 spoke steering wheel

wiring wise i knew there was going to be some work to do depending if i had a 6 pin or 12 pin slip ring. no modules or anything required as you just tap into the gearstick wiring so it just picks up on the gearstick + and -.

as i suspected i only had the basic 6 pin slip ring

plug wise the D2 S8 and B6 A4 has differnet plugs, but still has the same number of pins so will be a case of easily popping the pins out of the S8 plug and putting them in the A4 plug. the donor was a 2000 i think so no problems with the duel stage airbags of fitting a B7 wheel.

but the S8 wheel has an extra 4 wires for the tiptronic buttons. i think its feed, up gear, down gear and illuminations.

now this is where the problem starts as i only have 2 spare pins on my slip ring, and i need an aditional 4. i know i could just go and buy a 'A' or 'B' slip ring with 12 pins ready for horn, airbag, tiptronic , mfsw and heating, but i have a spare standard 6 pin slip ring left over from a breaker so i was going to open it up and see if it was possible to to put one of the ribbons in my slip ring and use the extra pins.... we will see. if it comes to needing to buy a new slip ring then i will have to, but no harm in trying :)

in other news a few of my friends have formed their own german car club over the last year or so and last week they orgnaised their own show so i thought it would be rude not to attend :)

i gave the ol girl a full machine polish and detail and i had forgot how white it was :)

and out

and found these on face book :)

had a little poke around in spare slip ring today to see if i can use what i have. there are two main types of slip ring it seems, a 6 pin and a 12 pin. the most common one is the standard 6 like i have on mine

not all of the 6 pins are used on the b6, there are actually 4 reserved for airbag, which i guess is to cater for the B7 duel acting airbags, but the b6 only use 2, plus 2 for the horn, leaving 2 spare :) ...... but i need at least 3 spare for the tiptronic buttons :( and preferably 4 (for illumination).

as i have two standard 6 pins i was going to use the standard ribbon from one into the empty 2nd slot in the other

standard 6 on the right, empty on the left

but its wider and a different shape to slot in the 2nd slot on the left :(

******, looks like i am going to have to buy a 12 pin slip ring. some careful ebay picking for a bargain ahead as i dont really want to spend any money......

the other problem is as the second ribbon and set of pins are ment for MFSW and heating etc which all runs through the steering wheel module, so the slip ring plugs straight into that with all its pins, where as the original one only has 2 pins going into the control module (for the horn), the rest go to a plug. i read a how to for tiptronicing a C5 A6 and they go into a plug, but the b6 doesnt :( this means i will have to piggy back before the module, no biggie.

i thought id look into what actually goes though the module and what doesn't

then i thought id open it up and see what the basic modules like i have are equip with, as alot of the pins are missing? this is a 'S' steering wheel module.

the steering wheel angle and horn use all their pins in red and blue respectively, but the wiper stalk in orange has one pin missing, possible for MFD as this donor was just a sport or maybe auto wipers?

on the other side, the indicator only uses 3 out of the 6 pins.... what higher spec can you get in the indicator stalk?? the auto lights button is on the headlight switch isnt it? not sure on that one... and the pins for the second ribbon in blue are all missing on this module.

had an hour this afternoon while my boy had a nap so i thought I'd stick the steering wheel on.

The S8 has a different plug to the B6 so it wasnt a straight plug and play. you need something microscopic to get the pins out, and i didnt want to cut and join the airbag wires and have resistance issues, so i started dissecting the S8 plug

it was alot easier to get the B6 pins out of the plug as you can just get a pick in

and using my conversion bible ;)

i fitted the S8 pins in the correct places on the B6 plug. this left me with 4 donors to use for the tiptronic

before i got any further i thought id just check the B6 airbag system was going to be happy with the S8 airbag, pluged it all in and the light opperates as normal :)

i need to get a 4 pin plug for the tiptronic wires otherwise the wheel will be a hardwired to the airbag which will be a pain, so left that for now and just set to getting the wheel on.

old se wheel coming off

went to put the S8 one on and...... wouldn't go on, ****** i thought, the splines must infact be different :(

but it turns out the S8 wheel is missing a cutout for a extra plug on the slip ring

its not used so cut it off flush :) and on it went :)

the main body is alot smaller than the normal A4 wheel so you can see a slither of slip ring at certain angles, but not really noticeable.

and all in, much better.

once i find a plug somewhere I'll connect the tiptronic buttons up too :) I'm fairly confident if i wire them up the same as a S4 paddle shift they will work, but if they dont i have a plan B aswell ;)

bit of an odd one today, got my self a all singing and dancing steering set. highline 'Q' module with multifuncion slip ring and Dis stalk. for a bargain price of £40  i fitted the cruise stalk about a year ago befrore i knew about the module differences, and wasnt going to just splash out another £60-£80 on just a module for it so been playing the waiting game.

Also picked up something i wanted to do an experiment with following this thread

http://www.audi-sport.net/xf/thread...les-and-slip-rings-the-same-as-d3-a8s.227689/

another fully dancing steering set up with multifunction slip ring, cruise, and dis but has a slightly different part number as its from a C6 A6, but look the same

so with all my bits a had a good strip down

oh ****** number 1, the 6 pin and 12 pin slip ring all look the same..... but as it turns out the plugs are different shape when side by side :( so the idea of adding the the pins into the same place as a s4 paddle shift and coding it it in is now out.

but as it turns out after studding what the functions and wiring diagrams actually do i only need 2 extra outputs to get the tiptronic to work as i can nick the ign live and earth from the horn. and add the two signal wires down to the gear stick running through the two spare airbag wires not used in the B6 squib.

so anyway removed my poverty 'F' module and fitted the 'Q' highline module and put it back together

and got an aray of christmas tree lights, along with no rear wiper working.

so plugged in the vagcom, ran a scan and got a ton of fault codes, the steering module was coded for full multifunction and with radio and voice controls, modules not commincating etc, so started the coding process, activated - sport steering wheel - cruise control - trip computer - rear wiper. re calibrated the G85 sensor, wiped all the codes and.........................

the only one left is ABS - 01044 - Control Module Incorrectly Coded. i havnt touched anything to do with the ABS?? its the only fault i have and everything else now works, cruise control now works, trip computers fine, rear wiper works but still got the abs message up

i've followed the RossTech guide on coding the coding the ABS module but doesnt change anything :( its strange! its a proper A4 highline module 8E0953549Q.

if noones got any suggestions i guess ill have to put my 'F' module back in and see if it goes away.

ive done a full auto scan and everythings happy apart from the abs. ive gone though the ross tech abs coding procedure followed by the g85 recalibration procedure. but still the same

ive put it all back to the standard F moldule and no cruise and the fault is still the same.

tried a c5 a6 setup as i had one here and no communication with that at all.

now putting the Q module all back in as we speak.

the fault im getting is ABS

01044 control module incorrectly coded
35 - 00 --

and sometimes

00778 steering angle sensor (g85)
66-10 not matched - intermittent.

but the second one usually clears.

i havnt touched anything to do with the tiptronic yet, and the steering wheel was fine with the F module so i dont think thats got anything to do with it, its just all started since plugging the Q steering module in and now won't go away :(

When doing this for someone I followed the ross-tech wiki and it was still saying it wasn't coded correctly until doing THIS after calibrating the G85.

phew, disaster averted :)

it turns out when coding you need to enter a value into the Workshop Code. it doesnt matter what it is, but cant be 00000 as mine was, 12345 will do nicely :)

pressed enter and all faults dissipated! horray! :)

so all sorted, i decided to make a start on the tiptronic while it was all apart so i wouldn't have to do it twice. i don't want to buy a new multifunction steering harness or anything so am going to give it a go direct down and tap into the shifter using the two spare terminals in the standard 6 pin loom that would be for a duel stage airbag. from what i can work out the tiptronic + and - switch to earth, so im hoping i can run the two signals into the steering wheel on the standard slip ring and earth on the horn ground.

so found a spare plug

nick the terminals

pop them in the empty terminals on my airbag plug

and run two wires down to the shifter

just need to locate the tiptronic + and - and splice in

after looking into it a bit more last night and finding the bentley manual for the 5hp19 gearbox it looks like the tiptronic might well be canbus on the B6. All the guides ive seen for tiptronic conversions on A6's and A8's are switched to earth, there was even a video of a guy in an A8 driving along with all his loom hanging out touching each wire to ground and changing up and down the gears. but it now looks like the B6 isnt like that :(

tiptronic steering wheel is now looking unlikely unless i go and buy a new steering harness and b6 multi slip ring. somethig i dont want to do as the budget mas maxed out on the £50 steering wheel!

HOWEVER.... laying in bed last night a brain wave hit me. i cant use the slip ring that came with my Q steering module as it looks like its from a B7 A4 and although they do look identical ....

....the plugs for the steering wheel loom and airbag plug on the car side are different (hence i couldnt use it)

but all the dimentions are the same, so i wonder if the ribbons are the same. so this morning i trundled down and took off the top covers

and it turns out the pins are in exactly the same place, just the face houses a different plug. this would be job done if the airbag plug right on the very back wasn't different

so this means i have to put the ribbon from the 12 pin B7 into the upper and lower casing of the B6 housing.

removed the 6 pin B6

And the 12 pin B7

and turns out they are the same, just one has an extra circuit board printed on one of the clear ribbons

and back together, all 12 pins in the B6 poverty spec housing :)

happy happy happy :)

so this means i can just wire up the tiptronic steering wheel buttons to the module the same as the B6 S4 paddle shift, code it in and it will work as factory :)

wiring those two extra wires in yesterday wont be in vain as because the S4's had paddles they only use 3 wires, control, + and -, no illumination. whereas mine are buttons they have an extra one for illumination too. so i can run an illumination feed into the wheel via this :)

i am aware i could probably of just gone and bought the squib i have just made, but wheres the point in spending money for the sake of it ;)

Just read from the start, such a cool build, keep it going!

Love the Vauxhall stuff too. You on migweb?

Cheers mate, yea on migweb too as rc.

Not had a chance to get the slip ring on and activate the tip buttons on yet, will update when i do :)

had a spare hour today so thought id finish off the steering wheel.

so wheel off (again)

swapped the slip ring for the one i made previous with the 12 pin ribbon in the b6 casing

next chopped off the S8 tiptronnic and got a cheapo 4pin plug

added the extra pins i needed to the B6 plug, and crimped on the plug terminals for the tiptronic

and assembled back together with the new plug

looking factory-ish

a quick zip with vagcom changing a 0 to a 1 and it all works, horray :) fully tiptronic

I'd wired it up to the pinouts of a B6 S4 with paddle change. 3 wires, +, - and control. but due to them being paddles they don't have any illumination feed as paddles don't have lights whereas my S8 buttons do.

i wasn't sure if it was going to work, but i sent up a power through the spare airbag plug id run wires to before to try in to the illumination feed and it works :)

very pleased I've finally got it all done :) :)

also if you are just trundling along in D and you tap the - it will switch to tiptronic and drop down a gear which is handy going up a hill or something and you don't want to hit the kickdown, you can just blip down a cog with the throttle pedal staying at the same place :) then it switches back to auto again.

job done :)

Keep it up mate as said should be proud of the workmanship and time and effort you have put in to this car i would love to do this one day

respect man! good job on getting it all working!! :D

whats peoples thoughts on what this is worth? as you have seen from the thread its been maintained regardless of cost with genuine audi parts or the highest quality alternative. Everythings been done, it looks awesome and goes well, and quite a rare spec.

52 plate 3.0 quattro.
flawless lpg conversion.
full beige se leather interior with sport trims and tiptronic wheel.
112k miles, tons of history, fully serviced.
19s with michelin pilot sports.
eibach proline springs
all front arms and bushes replaced.
genuine discs and padsall round
genuine s-line kit just fitted
tow bar.
much more as seen in the thread.

whats the bench mark price people think.

I'm a bit torn on my mates S6 he's selling......o_O

Just scanning through Autotrader and the like and apart from a couple of well over priced cars at £5k £3500 is about the norm for a tidy well maintained car.

i got a super cheap new old stock sports shock a few pages back off ebay, correct poundage for my car/layout. my current 100k SE shocks haven't worn well with the 45+mm drop and it has got very 'boaty'., driving along it would just kind of bob up and down. ive been playing the waiting game for another nos one to come up on ebay but no luck so went and got a new genuine one.

but when it arrived it was black :( i thought it was just a SE one, but it turns out they stopped doing them red a few years ago, they all come black now.

couldnt cope with a black sports shock so got the red oxide out :)

ventured out in the cold to get them on today

was greated with this aswell though

i'd cept the driveshafts off the origional silver one so stuck the whole shaft on.

and legs off

and swapped

and all back together :)

very impressed with the improvement. the boatyness has gone and its nice and firm without being rough :)

I managed to get a pair of front NOS sports shocks for £100 delivered when I fitted my H&R springs, but I couldn't find any rears and had to pay £75 each from TPS.

Great write up, lots of before and after stuff, nice one

Gotta admit, it looks well nice in white, and all the more unusual considering it's age, as white cars were deeply unfashionable at the time- even Plod went to silver cars for resale values!

Just wish white Testarossas were getting cheaper......

cheers for the comments everyone. i am finally just about happy with how it looks now, the ride height, the wheels, the kit, the handling, the whole package. and i think the fact it's white really does make it stand out from all the other B6's, all down to chance as like spacemonkey says back when it was new it was a very unfashionable time to have a white car, whereas now its all the craze (lucky for me ;) ) i do often get asked if its been resprayed.

i am at a bit of crossroads though, ive had it 3 odd years now and like everything i am getting a bit bored with it as i see it every day, bit bored of the performance as its all i ever drive and feel like a change.

my friend is selling his S6 for similar money i could put mine up for

this thing is specced up to the max, every single option you could think of it has, it makes mine look very poverty spec! and its has an extra 120+bhp to mine!

but i just dont think the A6s look as sporty as the A4s, even the S6. plus its black so a nightmare to keep clean, i live out in the countryside, whereas white seems to look clean for ever.

and ive replaced everything on mine with genuine parts so its all good for another 100+k miles without issues. its never let me down, and id have to lpg and towbar the S6.

its a toughy.....

I prefer the A4 for looks myself......possibly get a remap on yours and tinker a little on the power front.

not alot to report as not alot has been done.
it is however time for new tyres, and with 235 35 19s anything decent youre looking £150-200 a corner!

a late night ebay browsing session spotted a brand new set of pirelli p-zeros. super car tyres

it sounds like his mate works for porsche and when a customer request their brand new porsche to have a specific tyre the p-zeros it comes from the factory to the show room wearing go in the bin!
so i offered him £300 for a set and did a 250mile round trip to Woking to go pick them up, £35 in lpg :)

Happy days. Will get them fitted in the new year along with a ****** good wash! Living out in the countryside is great, but it means I've given up trying to keep it shiney this time of year lol

You can see i fitted the wheel nut covers from the blue one that looks alot better too :)
