Hill Assist Question

Hi there, don't worry, this won't be like the failed VCDS thread.... Tonight's conundrum is about the hill assist, basically I was wondering how this system works. If you have NO hill hold assist as an option (which I don't) how do you operate it? I mean in traffic if you're on a hill, you'll pull up the parking the brake and set off as normal when traffic resumes, so it seems a bit unnecessary to have hill assist if you pull up the EPB in traffic. Just wonder if anyone does otherwise and flick the switch down then set off on a hill. Anyway, I'm just interested in things like this and as I've seen it in the manual and on various threads just thought I'd raise this issue and see if anyone has any knowledge. Thanks and let the talking begin! :D
 
If I'm in traffic and on a hill I just use the foot brake. When the traffic moves I know I have a couple of seconds off the foot brake before I need to hit the gas. Nice and relaxing, no need to have to synchronise pedals with the EPB to avoid rollback.
So when you say "you'll pull up the parking brake", I'm not sure that this is true for the majority of us, whether auto or manual.

Fair enough, I just know that when I stop and put my foot on the brake I'm blinding the people behind me but also afraid that when I let go of it I'll roll back hence why I use the EPB. But I'll have to try "just braking and then hitting the clutch and gas". I've just got used to putting up the EPB and setting off haha

Your are obviously a very considerate driver. Dave would approve! :icon thumright:
But, when no one's behind you, try it. Take your foot off the brake then at your leisure engage gear and gas. Should be no rollback.

Yes I do approve. I hate stopping behind a car with it's brake-light on, especially at night. Personally I just use the EPB all the time in the same way as I used to use my handbrake except that is it now easier because I now longer have to release it to pull away. To me just using Hold Assist (where the brake lights stay on) is just laziness on the part of the driver.

Haha brilliant! yes well to me it seems easier to engage the EPB then set off as normal than to hold your foot on the brake and pull away in the normal procedure as the car would roll back (or forwards) normally but I guess this system can stop it somehow.
I didn't know it would hold the car there anyway (so clever these modern cars) so I will be giving this a go tomorrow
 
Just to be pedantic here for a moment.....
Audi Glossary does a very good job confusing everyone with the (in)correct terminology:



Hill Hold - comes as standard on all 8V A3's and S3's, both Manual and DSG. This gives you around 2 seconds of holding on a slope, while you transfer your foot from the brake pedal to the accelerator.

(Hill) Hold Assist (UH2) - is a £90 option on the 8V, and will hold your car on the footbrake indefinitely (or transfer it to the EPB), and will automatically apply the EPB for you when parked up (in most situations)...... ;)

With just the standard EPB (no UH2 Hold Assist Option) - there are occasions when it will automatically apply the EPB brake for you, e.g.: get out of the car in "P", remove key and leave the door open for more than 20 seconds - EPB will apply. Open the door while in "D" under 5km/h - EPB will apply itself.

Interestingly, there is a bit in the manual that says from time to time, you will hear the EPB whirr away, doing a "self test" when the car is switched off.....

I think that was even more devisive than Manual vs DSG, Sepang vs White vs Grey, Petrol vs Diesel, 98RON vs 95 RON, EPB vs Hold Assist, ACC vs no-ACC, Red Calipers vs Black Calipers etc.

If I know I'm going to be there for more than a few seconds I use the EPB, wouldn't want to sit with foot on brake pedal and in gear too, which for me I prefer not sit with the clutch in for minutes at a time. But then I have a manual.
 
I put mine in neutral and leave it on the hold assist, let the stop-start kick in most of the time. I like to think that if someone was bright enough to get a driver's licence, they would also be intelligent enough not to stare into my brake lights if they don't like it... </controversial>
 
Very interesting to see peoples opinions, even on the way into work this morning, I was stopped (on a flat I should add) applied the brake hard then released then I began to roll forward, so I braked. At this moment I would feel very unconfident in braking on a hill then releasing the brake, I think I would roll back.

However away from all this, love when you're low on fuel, as I am now, asking me if I wanted directions to a filling station, absolutely heroic that.

Hill Hold only works on a slope, it works in conjunction with the longitudinal sensor. It won't work on the flat, or a very gentle slope (as you've discovered).

(Assuming no Hold Assist Option and S-tronic)
As soon as you release the brake, the engine will re-start, the car will hold for 2 seconds, ready for you to get on the accelerator and set off.

(If you have Hold Assist and S-tronic)
Hold Assist will hold the car on the brakes with S/S activated indefinitely. When you tap the throttle, the car will re-start and off you go.

Never meant to cause a big debate about the brake lights dazzling drivers behind.... Oh well.

Tonight on my way home I tried it and, it worked! So pleased that you can do it, I even waited like two seconds then let it roll back slightly haha. Yeah so I normally use the EPB then set off etc but a good feature to have none the less.
