Anyone else in the unfortunate position to be working a 12 hour night shift?

Lucky you. I've got tomorrow night to go but then I do get 5 off so maybe I shouldn't complain

I work permanent nights, only do four 9 hour shifts though, 10pm till 7am Monday to Thursday.

I do prefer nights myself, less management which is always a bonus

I'm working days 6am-6pm tomorrow and Saturday then working nights 6pm-6am Sunday and Monday. Only 4 weeks left then I get 18 days off

I do a lot of nights

HVG better as roads are quiet but hate them.

Did it for 5 months 12 hour shifts,,definatley not for me.I was getting home at 7am and awake at 10am .I just couldn't get my body clock to adjust:think:

I have heard that shift working usually brings with it a premium payment, any time the shifties round me complain, I suggest they come off it - that does not go down well as that would meaning boring 8:00 > 17:00 five days a week and only enough money for a holiday once a year!

Usually but I don't get anything extra even for bank holidays. Not even overtime rate. Sometimes I do over 70 hours.

oooo i get well rewarded for any overtime which usually clock up around 20 hrs per week min

I used to play that game, or found that being what the company wanted/needed meant doing a lot of "funny" hours, kids commented about that once on a birthday card! Nowadays it seems like company money people can handle constant shift working easier than overtime on demand.

Youngest daughter works over 85 hours a week with no O/T payment, she is trying to get things working, her company is just using her, but as her first job she does what she thinks is needed. It is easy to think that way when she had been used to working "funny" hours in lab at uni doing her D-Phil.

I do 12 hour days and nights. Been doing it for 6byears now with an hour commuting each way. Hate the nights though.

Well I'm here again tonight. Do days and nights in 4 or 5 blocks then either 4 or 5 days off so it's good when your off.
Shift pay is better money but like someone else said, I don't get extra for bank holidays

I done a couple weeks of 12hr nights back in February or March, brilliant money, was only for a special job though. For the past year or so i've been on days (0730 - 1545) and backs (1530 - 2330) love this shift pattern, about to finish the job i'm on though so most likely going to be on permanent days until the next boat gets under way which will probably be in 18 months time :(

I actually volunteered to do permanent nights. I start Monday night, finish Friday Morning so always get a a 3.5 day weekend. Starting at 10pm and finishing at 7am means I miss all the traffic.
All hours I work are paid at 1.33 times normal day rate and it's all pensionable. All meal breaks are paid breaks so doing 4 *9 hour shifts I make up my 36 hour week.
I worked out that compared with doing a normal 5 day week my hourly rate is 1.5 times as much because of the unpaid meal breaks and all the extra travelling time plus I come to work 20% less.
I don't miss very much really as most things tend to happen at the weekends. I haven't worked an hours OT in the last 18 months.

Been working shifts for Network Rail for 20 odd years now-12 hour days and nights on the rapid response teams.
You never get used to working nights, just learn to tolerate them.I find I can never sleep beyond 1230-1pm these days.
We work on a 4 week rotation, with the longest amount of time off being 6 days every 4 weeks.Always some overtime going just now though as we have 2 off long term sick out of 12 guys.I seem to be the only one in my grade working the o/t.Can't complain about the money though.

Fortunately I don't get many night jobs. Some roads we simply can't work on during the day so have to do it overnight. If it's my scheme I often have to supervise that work. Nothing like working from a port-a-cabin at the side of a main road when it's freezing. Had ice on my laptop after one night. LoL

We do 50:50 days & nights, I've been off for a couple of weeks, starting back on nights tonight. First one's a killer, then they get easier. Suppose I should go for a nap now, come to think of it ...

Not exactly night shift. I work for a very good supermarket retailer and we have shift workers who generally work 2100/0700 for four days then 3 days off. Pay is reasonable but not as attractive as mine. Don't know how they can work with the main floor lights set at minimum, it's shocking and must make it a struggle for those tired. I mostly work 0430/1230, various days 2 of 4 weekends off.

SNORE.

Back on nights tonight, 4x12 our shifts to go. I especially love it when it's nice weather and I'm on weekend nights, it's soooo great being in bed when everyone else is out in the sun...

......where the sarcasm emoticon?
