hi am based in liverpool northwest of england, i seem to have a few problems with my audi s3 2010i would like to drop the car off with some 1 who knows a lot about the s3s. i have had the car in 4 different garages for them all to tell me Sutton different firstly the car seems to have a bit of play in the steering wheel on full lock, also the car as started to get really clunky an bangs on front end on uneven road surface, and the main thing is a terribly loud grinding noise on the front when i do left hand bends, it seems to come from the front drivers side the noise and only does it when i have my foot to floor round bends ie (country roads) other then that the noise doesn't happen perfect in straight lines our right hand bends perfect its just when you bang the left hand bends out the noise is very bad and its very off putting as you can feel it through the steering wheel. the garages i have taken it to i have only really ever told them to find the grinding noise when i turning and they av all been underneath the car and nothing is there to see why the noise would be there, so 1 garage told me the problem could be in transferebox its self as to when you turn the weights going over to right hand side which is trigging Sutton inside the box to cause noise, when some 1 else is having a good laugh about that saying its defo not the transfere box cause it would be doing more then just a grinding noise when you turn in other words there would be more symptoms to it if it was transferebox. any help be much appreciated

Dude.

1) Not General Chat
2) Linebreaks are your friend (people are more likely to try to help if they can read without asphyxiating)

I'll move the thread to the relevant section now (where you're more likely to find help); but...

Knocks/bangs/grinding/play in steering, and it's about 4 years old. Is it not something simpler like worn bushes and/or a knackered CV joint or two?

EDIT: If you just want to take it somewhere; have you spoken to Awesome GTI in Irlam?

ok thanks mate and it all looks good under car bushers an cv joints r good condition

I reckon both could catch you out if they've only been checked with a mk1 eyeball - CV joint can be shot to buggery but still look fine if the boot's not split.

Have you had a swing on the wheels/uprights to see if you can feel any knocks/clunks on the bushes etc.?

...And again (in case I edited while you were replying), if you're looking for a 'fire & forget' fix, Awesome GTI are probably more than worth a call/squirt down the '62.

EDIT: Ping @AwesomeAl

Thanks for that I have car booked in awesome gtiThursday morning hopefully they fix the problem, I have had car in the ball joint centre for 4wheel alignment and them guys tell me all is good underneath bushers and bearings wise. I went out last night in car, and what I was finding is when turning left at slow pace I was getting no noise, now when I kept wheel in same position but put foot down the noise would start an get louder an faster and definitely sounds like Somethink is rubbing an grinding down on the right hand side. Now I poped the fuse out for the 4wheel drive to see if this made any difference, what I found is the noise almost halved and the grinding feel halved as well .

Nearest to Liverpool will be Unit20 in Neston, he specialises in all S and RS cars, including other performance models in the VAG range.

hello again i took car down to awesome gti yesterday, them guys had a good look over the car and after about half hour they test drove car to come back and tell me the noise is the front diff. well i felt like crying didn't i they wanted £1700 to fix it but that would be a uprated diff which i wouldn't need as i just like my cars standard maybe a remap thats about it . so we talked about options i have and it was idea everything brand new gearbox transfere box our just get it stripped down and the part fixed for £1700, our source a used gearbox and transferebox and just put the 2 fresh units in saves all the messing round, so i said well the 2 parts couldn't be broken gearbox and transferebox and the man says no its just lot easier to change the 2 rather then strip them down an rebuild it cause what he said is you will come across alot more work and problems if u do it that way. so am in market trying to locate a used gearbox and transferebox.

OK am back a bit confused now am trying to purchase a gearbox for me car 2010 10 reg s3 sportback reg is ll10uyg, am after a used gearbox cause i haven't got funds to purchase brand new 1 so am getting told i need a kdt gearbox code but then am getting told i need a kzv gearbox code same 1 as in golf r. can any 1 help me out and tell me what the correct gearbox for my car is please

I would get an opinion from Martin @ Unit20 near Chester before paying out for a new diff.
Have you checked the gearbox/engine mounts?

According to ELSA there two manual boxes listed KNZ and KZV,
KNZ has a final drive code KMC
KZV has two final codes KMC, MMK

You can pick up a front transfer box from fleabay for around £300, BUT, I would take it to a proper VAG specialist before spending any money. Speak to Martin at Unit 20.

Hi, I’m having this exact problem with my 2009 s3, did you find out what the problem was and what gearbox did you end up going for? I need a knz but been told a kdt would be fine?
