Just had notification of a recall to check coolant pipe on my s3 saloon. Anyone else had this? Apparently it's not urgent, but they sent a reminder one week after the first notification, so I've booked in for the end of the month.

Iv'e only had mine 8 weeks, & I haven't heard a thing , was in the dealership yesterday as well ??

Mine is loosing some coolant (have to fill up) and smells like if it's loosing some, but you can not notice it anywhere.

This is strange, my coolant warning light came on the other day.

I collected mine May 2014 - not sure when it was built, but assume not long before that. Interesting that the earlier thread concentrated on the pump but the recall states coolant pipework. Haven't checked the level yet but will do so.

Do check it into the dealer / call them, friends BMW had a coolant problem and its leaked everywhere.

May be inconvenient but sort it now or it may get worse.

Checked level and it's approaching min - I'd say about 75% down the band between max and min. That's in 1400 miles.

I dont think it should drop at all. Mine hasn't changed (yet...!) since new (early July) after 1800 or so miles.

My coolant level is now on minimum... I've been keeping an eye on it and taking pics (cos I'd forget!) and since end of September it's dropped from 2.5 x x x rows above minimum to this morning being on minimum. It's booked in for a service on Friday, so that's been added to the job sheet.

Let's see what they say...

Have you tried to open the coolant recipient (once motor cold !) it should refill itself... Give a try and report back.

Mine is booked in this Friday too, for Coolant loss, ACC fault, and Pre-Sense fault.

Could be that the pipework recall (mentioned by the OP) is only for Saloon?

And yes, I have "reset' the coolant level by opening the expansion bottle (when cold) - no difference. :(

Is opening the expansion bottle a recommended first step, then? Can is sat at -1 at the mo, so I think it's safe to say it's cold :D

My coolant level seemed to me a bit low 2 months ago (at about 9'000kms) so I went to Audi for a check. The guy just slowly opened the coolant bootle (warm) and it refilled itself to the right level immediatly. Anyway the guy added a bit of collant afterwards and told me "no prob !". And since then no issue. Only my 2 cents...

Worth a try but no change to the level after opening the coolant cap :(

No letter here, mine is an October build though. Maybe a bad batch of hoses that stretch?

My coolant pipework has mono.pur, maybe that is the problem

True, I've done some calculations and I think you need some hard scratchy plastic, that'll solve it. Haha

But how's that work? I have the scratchy hard, nasty A3 plastic already ;)

Maybe its because you've been using v-power nitro instead of tesco momentum 99 :p

OK, back from Audi and they say that it's a fault with the coolant cap that's a known issue; replacement cap is on order.

Even brand new the Goodyear Eagle F1's corner better than the Conti's. Hurrah!

I noticed last night that my coolant is at minimum. I've done 4.5k miles.

I called Glasgow Audi and they said if the light isn't on it doesn't need topped up and just to leave it till the light comes on. This seems like insanity to me.

I've never been one for DIY car maintenance so how much and what should I top it up with? Just water?

You need G13 Coolant

Diluted 2:3 or 1:1 (Coolant : Water)
(or see label on bottle if extremely winter-y where you are)

Keep it between min and max. My dealer gave me a bottle FOC.

No, it's not normal to lose coolant at all. I'd get the dealer to check it but my dealer said to me today that there's a known problem with the coolant caps. They've ordered me a new one, so we'll see...

As we speak, mine is kept in overnight for yet another pressure test. If it holds, then it's definitely not the expansion bottle cap. But although Audi have seen several cars that are losing coolant, there is no official fix as they don't know where it's going (no stains).

How do they do the pressure test? I would have thought it was by removing the expansion bottle cap and connecting the equipment there and pressurising.
Therefore if it passes the pressure test it has to be the cap?!?

^ Very good point :) That thought did cross my mind, although there is very little to go wrong with a cap. Plus, you'd also see evidence of staining around the cap/bottle if the cap was releasing?

My suspicion is head gasket, twice now, I've had a briefest of misfire when I've started it from cold......

The cap is a very simple system but is not full proof and there may not be any staining apparent if it is a slow leak as the temperature under the bonnet will dry up any steam before it can stain.
I had a similar problem on my fiesta and there were no visible marks and i changed the cap as I had run out of options.

Surely you'd tell the loss of power if it was head gasket

When mine went in, they asked if I had ever opened the coolant container while the engine was hot as it showed staining around the bottle. The cap being an issue was something that was never mentioned to me and after 2 days of having the car they were fairly clueless as to the issue

Since the coolant was refilled from empty a few weeks ago it hasn't completely emptied itself again but it is going down at a rate more than I would expect
