Morning all

S3 - 2011 S tronic - 30k

So not had any related issues recently which in some ways is good I suppose. Anyway started the car up this morning and the mrs says "oh, that doesn't sound normal" so instantly not only doe that annoy me but I also turned into the most insecure and paranoid person alive trying to listen to noise she could only explain as a rattling noise under the bonnet.

So causally driving I've got the music off trying to listen hanging out the window (she wants to talk naturally, that soon stopped) and it appears that when it's just idling it sounds very tinny. Driving can't notice anything but when stationary or just about to pull away it appears.

I'm going to give it a scan later but doubt anything will arrive from that. Maybe a possible belt that's slightly loose, but again nothing looked too obvious.

Any of the above sound familiar to anyone?

Is it a rattle noise inside the car but not in the engine? if so i have it and no idea what it is :(

No definitely engine. I'll get the scanner on it in a bit. Got a feeling could be engine mount

Is it possibly the timing chain tensioner.?It is a known problem on the older tfsi engines, I assume your engine is the newer tsi type so not entirely sure if it affects this engine..It could also possibly be the high pressure fuel pump that is making the noise?Hope it helps give you an idea as to what is at fault..

I inspected and replaced the cam follower so I had the fuel pump off about 2 months ago but it's been fine since I've reassembled it with no issues. I had a drive back this evening and I could pick up on it again, maybe it was the mrs making me paranoid. Then you pick up on everything. But then again I never drive without the music on so it's going to be different. Time will tell

Have a look to see if any heat shields have come loose

loose /broken engine mount ?

Wouldn't that come up on VCDS at all though? If so, that was all clear no faults. And surely 30k for an engine mount to go is a bit extreme isn't it?

mechanical not electrical so no faults shown , usual syptoms is a vibration and slight knock when accelerating ,braking.
studs are prone to shearing off on the top engine mount

Hmm! They visible from under the bonnet? Or underneath?

Ok so have an update:

I was checking my DV+ today and re lubricated more for a piece of mind maintenance check. Whilst I was under the bonnet and with the engine cover off I decided to start the engine to see if I could inspect this sounds....
The noise was coming from the engine!!! So bearing in mind I had no indication lights on the dash in the first place I decided to check the oil (last replaced nov 2013) right on the minimum mark (so few questions start running through the brain)
1) why has it got so low? My old A3 2.0 TFSI use to lose some oil gradually but I did create a post on this and it was bought to my attention that these engines tend to use some oil up... Still baffles me, but I accepted it then and I use to top it up. With the S3 though I haven't needed to top it up because it never seemed to lose any (before oil change anyway).
2) why hasn't the indication come up on the dash.
3).... I topped the oil up with about 3/4 of a litre and the noise has stopped, even more strange that when the car cooled down and re checked there seems ever so more oil than I topped up originally.

Very strange and worrying.
It's due a service end of October so will get them to have a butchers just in case but for now.... It's fine...
