Just filled up the tank on a 2.0 TDI and noticed that the estimated range is 385 miles. That seems pretty low after having brimmed it - is the range pegged at this as an upper number?

Just reset it, it changes as you drive anyway.

Yeah filled mine up the other day and reset to 410, which on the S3 is pretty satisfying to see

The "range" is calculated from various stored numbers, including average consumption during the last ignition-drive cycle.

So - if you drove "enthusiastically" during the ignition-drive cycle previous to filling up, your "range" figure will be diminished.

But as you drive and with progressive ignition-drive cycles, this figure will change dynamically.

I've covered about 2k miles in my S3 so far and the range always shows 385 miles after I fill up so there could be something in the original suggestion.

I think the most I've had is about 360 miles from a tank (range showed zero for the last 10 miles before I filled up) so I don't know where it is getting the figure of 385 from - it doesn't make any difference how I drive prior to filling up.

Range computer seems accurate most of the time i.e. on a long consistent drive it will go down by 50 miles during a 50 mile drive.

With my a3 1.8tfsi I've never seen it above 370miles. Regardless of which petrol I use

With my 1.8 TFSI it usually reads 420 after a fill up, then following a commute to and from work (70 miles total) it often reads 425! I like the idea of a 70 mile journey using negative amounts of fuel :)

I don't think I've ever got near to a 500 mile range in reality though, but then I try to fill up well before it's empty.

I filled up last week and it said 415m in the tank. 50 miles later it said 425m in the tank :)
I'm filling up tomorrow and I think I'll actually be on 380ish after several commutes and ***** traffic around Portsmouth!

Simple maths:

more fun before filling up = lower predicted range;

continued fun after filling up = even lower actual miles to a tank.

Ergo; it costs more to enjoy yourself than it does to watch your mpg.

I pay don't pay much attention to the range unless is says less than 30. Anything over 125, I just mentally subtract 50 miles as there so many variables and it drops from 125 to 85 to 50 quicker than actual miles would suggest.

John.
And yes I know there is a reserve after 0 miles
