Given we seem to have resolved the issue about washers and levellers at MOT time, can anyone confirm or deny whether the thumbwheel for the halogen lights can be used to change the beam angle if single xenon (i.e. the version with halogen high beams) have been retrofitted?

I have searched (a lot) but can't find an answer - are all those OEM single xenon retrofits running around with no means of adjustment to compensate for loads/passengers?

BTW I don't need telling the total OEM fit up (suspension sensors, washers etc) is the best option - I know that.

Nope the roller switch cannot be used to lower/raise xenon adjustment, as levellers are used for this. Only way is to manually adjust them from the top of the headlight with a pozi screwdriver to the preferred height.

As above & don't try using this system or you could damage the motors which aren't replaceable.

Hmmm <strokes chin> in theory these things do the same thing - I assume the halogens use some sort of stepper motor - but the xenons use something different then? According to t'internet (I know, I know) this doesn't apply to Ford Mundano or Rover 75/MGZTs where they just connect up the thumbwheel. Not doubting the answers (I mean I'm really not) but interesting that Audi had to do it differently (again!).

3 pin as opposed to 4 pin, I wouldn't bother trying to get working tbh mate.

Thanks NHN - it's all theory at this stage so no danger of me destroying anything at present. I'd just noticed that (presumably because everyone wants bi-xenons) the single xenon ones are down to only outrageous s/h prices rather than completely insane :)

Depends on what you call outrageous :)

To me £400 quid for a pair of second-hand headlights is still a lot, but then I clearly have a lot less disposable income than most folk on here :)

£400 is cheap tbh, new are about £1500 & that's without levelling/washer systems, but they're far better than halogens :p

I'm with Nigel on that one xenons are in a different league to halogens, deffo a must on any car. I can't wait to see what the LED headlights are like when my 8V S3 arrives.

I had OEM xenons on my two previous motors (Mondeo and a Jag XJ) so I know they're good.......I'm just not as wealthy as I was :)
