Hi guys i am in need of some advice i went to a garage to buy a car and saw this 2005 a6 with 180,000 miles on it. It has fsh part audi and part indy. It needs 2 new front tyres, has a knock at front right suspension which the dealer is sorting. I have paid a £200 deposit to secure the car at a price of £3800. I have driven it and it drives really well goes in a straight line stops well pulls quickly and revs tickover with no needle bounce.

Basically i want to know if im being had off or not because i have seen some lower mileage one for sale online for a similar price in some cases cheaper. Lower mileage. And newer.

If i am being had off ill pull out but id like my deposit returned obviously which is the tricky part.

Its enevitable ill be buying one. If not this one.

Cheers folks

Listen out for chain rattle (£3k to fix), check for white smoke from exhausts (£1k+ if injectors), get someone to do a VCDS scan on it and see what faults show up. See if on a longlife or fixed service, any receipts to prove what work has already been done, check sill area for any signs of rust coming through. Cant think of anything else to check but I am sure someone may give some more pointers.

Cheer for reply m8. Everything u stated appeared to be ok although i havent checked the sills. I checked the mileage history with the dvla and also checked the service history with audi which they confirmed to be accurate. Audi also said there had been repairs done to the vehicle but were unable to say what. So im gonna assume this is a good thing considering its high mileage.

Mine is a 55 plate 3.0TDi Q it's now just over 190K and the only engine issue I have is the injectors (smokes when idling, need 2 new injectors) Audi say you must change all 6 but people have just changed out the faulty injector and it fixed the problem without costing 4 figure sum. The only thing I would recommend is cleaning out the inlet system as in my build thread.

Would also recommend moving away from long life service and change the oil every year or 10K miles.

Thanks for reply m8. Could you link that thread please? I am quite tech savvy although ive never owned a diesel i am fairly confident about unbolting bits and cleaning crap out of dirty places! I previously owned a mondeo v6 and had all sorts of injector issues / carbon buildups, cat ans sensor failures and manifold cracks all to which i repaired or replaced on my drive. I appreciate the advice and when i get the car i will leave it for a week or 2 before touching it just incase theirs any major issues ill whip it back to the dealer. Although after this time no doubt ill have every fluid and filter changed and replaced and the injectors cleaned as i am in no doubt at 180k they will be ready for it

Cheers

I wouldnt worry too much about the car at that price. I've seen similar 3.0tdi / 2.7tdi cars with even greater mileage. Friend of mine at work has a 2.7tdi 55-reg (180k+ miles ) over 2yrs now and has the chain issue rattle on start-up. Its just a rattle for a few seconds. He's had to change one injector when he first bought the car over 2yrs ago. he's had no issues ever since. You'd only end up buying an 08-reg car for over £10K with approx 70k miles. Another issue that could occur on all these cars is the inlet manifold issue.. That occurs approx every (50 -70k miles). All these issues still doesn't stop the car from functioning..
