Fuel Filter Change 2.0 Tdi 143

So I'm looking to change my fuel filter, where is this located on the car and what tools do I need to take it off?

Also where's the best place to get the filter, how much do you reckon audi would charge?
 
I think fuel filter at audi is approx £42 - my car is in for a interim service today but I will be adding the fuel filter myself - not worth paying audi an extra 170 for the privelage...
 
Funny Aaron am actually thinking of doing this myself, from what I read online its under the drivers footwell accesable from underside of the car! :) .. I changed the filter on my old A4 so going to give this a go over the weekend! :)

its not a hard job.......but you must prime it using vcds or similar or you can damage the high pressure fuel pump,i primed mine using vcds,it will start by alot of cranking but thats a risk i wouldnt take ever,or1 day you could be driving along and your fuel pump could pack up. I paid £20 inc vat genuine from tps.
 
Cant you just turn the ignition on and off a few dozen times to prime?
 
i done mine yesterday and thats exactly what i did turned it on took a couple of seconds to prime an started fine and has done ever since
 
If you fill the fuel filter housing before you start the the engine, you are minimizing the possibility of HPFP damage as much is possible WITHOUT Vag-Com. That said, I have the CD and paper version of the official service manual. The CD version says that EVERY time the fuel system is "opened up" the system should be primed (they just say "filled") using VW's scan tool (Vag-Com works too). You are supposed to run both electric fuel pumps (lift pump and auxiliary fuel pump for sixty seconds, three times. Then check for leaks, then go for a test drive including WOT at least once. Then check for leaks again, and if any CELs appear, clear them and go for another test drive until there are no CELs.

IMHO, you should always use VCDS after replacing the FF (or anything else that opens up the system). I prefer to minimize any chance of the HPFP having to try to pump air.
 
are the fuel pumps not in the tank ? i know there is one just before the fuel filter like a little booster but for the seconds that it takes to prime i dont believe for a second its going to cause it to fail i think its just another Audi belt and braces

it would be the same if you ran out of fuel the pump would stil run can't be that bad

Then select Basic settings
Select Checking fuel system pressurisation pump from the list.

If there is any air left in the fuel system, the engine may switch to the backup mode ('emergency running' mode) during the road test. Switch off the engine and erase the event memory. Then continue the road test.

there is one in the tank,underneath and engine,if you run out of fuel,it require same procedure...to prime.......your choice.

Well done the fuel filter today no problem at all really handy to do! :).. Used VCDS after fitment to prime fuel through the new filter and car started first time no problem at all!:)

Went to see Pat at Belfast Audi today and picked up my filter, came in a nice Audi bag :)

I did my 140 2.0TDI without VCDS or similar.

I clamped the pipes either side of the filter

Removed old filter

Filled new filter with diesel

Fitted filter

Removed clamps

Car started fine, same as normal.

I changed it without VCDS, I just clamped the pipes either side of the filter and filled the new filter before fitting. Car started same as normal no problems.

If I had VCDS I’d prime it but I don’t so I improvised, like you said it’s Audi belt and braces.

Spoke to my mate who was a master tech at skoda for 15 years and now works for bmw. He says just pumping air out of system will not harm fuel pump at all . :racer:

Unless you continue for a long periods of time until battery goes flat for example (just so were clear) :rockwoot:
