Hi all,

how much does a haldex oil change and filter change cost these days? Only, looking at the service schedule for my car mines due one on its next service! and i dont have any receipts to shows if its been done previously - although it does have a fully stamped up book by audi dealers (not that that's any guarantee though i guess!)

Cheers

Will

I had mine done with major service at audi cos it's fully stamped like yours. I think that part of service was £140

AMD do a haldex service for £100

DIY I'm guessing is much cheaper but beyond my skill set.

Cheers mate, out of interest what was the total cost of a major service from audi including haldex? Save me phoning them up for a quote!

If you buy the filter removal tool, and have a set of axle stands (or ramps) and a basic tool set, this is a very easy DIY job.

Remove drain plug (hex bolt, possibly 5mm?)
Remove filter
Install new filter
Re-fill with Haldex oil (comes in a plastic cannister that fits into a "mastic gun" - this is the most fiddly bit)
Re-fit drain plug.

30min job.

Oh right, might do it myself then just get the service done at audi for the history! Where is the haldex located on the car? (Might be a stupid question)

Hi Will, they have a fixed price thing but all in was £440 major service. Essentially pay a couple of £££more for the stamp tbh. Not sure some of the guys on here would say its sensible though.

Sorry to dig this up again but i never did get round to ordering the parts back in feb when i first posted this thread. I am however ordering them now. or trying to, as I'm confused at to which haldex filter it is out of these two: (Car is a '99 S3, APY if it matters?!)

I guess the £38 one, second on the list is this correct?

And by the way, that's steep for a little filter! o_O

Have a search on Ebay for "Haldex Oil" and you'll find what you're looking for.

Genuine Parts - G052175A1 & 02D525558A

ok cheers!

By the way, Audi quoted me £296 to service the haldex system. How outrageous is that for what can't be more than an hours work!!

Tell you what drive it down to my place and i will do it for for half the money inc parts tea and bikkies

So i did this today, turned out (using the guide as a reference: http://www.petercoopercarrepairs.co.uk/changing_the_audi_quatro_haldex.htm) my haldex filter had never been changed as it was the metal cased one! Also the oil i removed was completely black, much thicker than the new stuff and much less in quantity! Measured at bang on 200ml, but there was a bit that came out of the filter and ended up on the floor.

Just as a reassurance from you guys, however, I did lose a bit of the new stuff when filling it back up cos it was fiddly being too close to the ground and i dropped the drain plug when trying to put it back in :banghead: .... it was only probably 30-40ml. Does this matter hugely? I'm worried that i've messed it up that's all.

Wow, sounds like it really needed changing! For such a simple job it makes sense to DIY I think.

If I remember correctly, I think the volume of the oil canister is 275ml? So if you only drained 200ml of old oil and lost around 30-40ml of new oil, you should still have enough in there.

Yeah, 15 years without a change of filter at least!

Okay cool, hopefully its fine then. I haven't taken it for a spin yet as i got soaked through doing it but i guess that will tell me if if its okay or not!

I think you should befine. If it was that bad to start with though, I think I would run it for a while and then repeat the oil/filter change (without spraying it everywhere this time...) to remove any last of the gunk.

Yeah i've been thinking about it .. i think i will redo the oil change at the very least after i've bought a set of ramps and use them as opposed to axle stands. Also think i will buy a NAPA suction gun as my silicon tube cradle doesn't really ratchet up very well anymore! Trying to use that in a plunging motion instead wasnt the easiest either!

Their is a level check bung on the side of the haldex, which you can fill through aswell, you can't get the tube and a caulking gun in their though, so just use a longish screwdriver to push the oil out the tube instead.

Swapping the oil again would be a good idea as you don't actually dump all the oil out when servicing it, as not all will come out.I got a whole load more when I dropped the pump after draining it from the plug in the bottom first.
