Oem+ Brake Upgrade

Sorry thought you had a Quattro .. D'oh.

Facelift S4's arent that hard to get hold of used or you can get them from bigredd iirc or even get S8 rears which are slightly bigger iirc.

I have S4 facelifts fitted but with trig brackets and B6 300mm discs rather than standard 256mm discs.

Again clearance is tight due to the spaced out caliper.

ohh they look good..
Ive got a set of FL s4 rears sitting in the garage there needing stripped and cleaned but im wanting to get them on.
will the standard FL s4's fit under a set of 16's? just im planning on running with my 5 spokes over the winter and getting my 17's refurbished.
Im half tempted with the trig adapters though looking at yours and just sell my 5 spokes

Id say it would be a tight fit possibly wont go under

I bought genuine new seal/boot kit for mine for around £25 and rebuilt them after i cleaned them up and painted them.

where did you get the seal kit? Ive been thinking on doing this.

yea I was thinking it may be a tight fit. might just end out selling the 5 spokes then.

They should fit under 16's, but i needed spacers for the boleros as the curved spoke cought on the caliper.

Personally i'd suggest you dont bother trying to refurbish them yourself, send them to BiggRed and let them do it.

Cost wise, by the time you buy the seal kit for £25, and a pair of new pistons at £30 each, then spend the time stripping them etc, its easier just to pay BiggRed the £120 they charge for a full refurb, which includes shot blasting, painting them, also dismantling and freeing up and refurbing the handbrake mechanism (near impossible to DIY, i gave up when i tried) and fully rebuilding with new pistons etc.

I rebuilt my first set, reusing the old pistons and installing new seals from Audi. They lasted about 18 months before one started leaking after a track day. I replaced one, and the other siezed up when i tried to wind it back to fit new pads.

So when got the set for the avant i just sent them in and got them back all sorted properly.

I used the old pistons on mine and lighlty cleaned up any imperfections with some 2000 grit paper whilst applying oil, mine seized up as they were left in a box with the calipers wound out after i tried the operation of the handbrake to check they were moving freely which resulted in stripping both of them again, i did this on a bit of a budget so if they go again i will just send them to bigredd and get them done properly as the TQS may be coming off the road pretty soon for the stroker build.

Can someone with the knowledge educate me? Are the 288mm and 312mm calipers essentially the same beside the carriers? Thanks.

^^ correct but only if using an A4 caliper if the caliper is from a 312mm car ie S3/TT then no the piston is smaller and wont be compatible with the A4 due to the master cylinder being different iirc

Anything that has ATE calipers, 288mm disc and smaller caliper carrier spacing and on the B5 platform will do for 312mm upgrade if you car isn't running 288mm as standard.

The312mm upgrade is ideal for people with 288mm as its bolt on and doesnt require cracking of brake hoses and bleeding thats why its classed as bolt on !!

I'm not 100% what mine are, but there neither of the above as how I understand it the 288mm are from a TQS and TDI and it's defo not 312mm! I only have a 1.8 non-turbo. So in my situation would the 288mm be a 'bolt on' mod as it wouldn't require breaking into the braking system?

If yours a 1.8 se it will have the 280mm iirc and the sliders move in the carrier rather than the caliper sliping on the slide pins which 288/312mm use either route requires bleeding of the brake system on a car fitted with the lucas calipers.

Bradderz how much space do you have left between the caliper and the wheel?
I have tried my brembos on the B6 upright and a spare wheel and with 12mm spacer it is tight as hell!
I barely get 3mm and I'm thinking maybe I will need 15mm spacer?

I have about 5mm clearance on the front B6 calipers id imagine brembos will be more pokey than what i have but my boleros are ET35 not the normal ET45 ones rears are probably 3mm clearance on the facelift S4's with B6 discs.

Ahh, yes that makes a difference with ET35 on yours. Mines are ET45 so that explains the need for spacer.
I'm a bit worried that if I get 15mm spacers together with B6 uprights and drop the car on coilovers, it will rub like mad.
I will probably have to test the fitment when on the car and see if I can squeeze the 15mm spacer and move the 12mm one to the rear
which should be fine with facelift S4 ones.

Offset can be different on two different given wheels it depends on spoke design and if the rim is dished.

You could have a rim thats concaved with ET35 which will have good clearance against a dished rim with flat spokes that will have less clearance over the concaved rim. Understanding offsets really helps when choosing your given wheels.

Yeah should have good clearance on them as the spokes are 'flush' to the edge of the rim and not dished like mine.

Hi chaps, I know this thread seems to have gone on and on but can someone clarify something for me? If I'm correct, my '00 1.8 non-turbo has 280mm calipers? I've been offered both the 288mm and 312mm calipers and 312mm carriers. I'll be changing my wheels, hopefully courtesy of jbh, to the 5 spoke design, which will give the necessary clearance to fit either choice. My question is will the 312mm bolt straight on to the platform I have? I understand this is the case with going from 288mm to 312mm but unsure if you can go from 280mm to 312mm? Thanks.

You can go anything up to 312mm on the A4 B5 until you have to change uprights then the options increase massively.

Either of the setup will do if your wheels give enough clearance.

Also there is no '312mm caliper' so to speak the 312mm upgrade utilises the 288mm caliper and then the 288mm carrier is replaced with ones from an S3/TT or some skoda's and A6's to move the caliper out to run 312mm disc.

So in a nut shell you need

288mm calipers (A4 1.8T OR ANY A4 QUATTRO)

312mm carriers (S3/TT/A6/VRS)

312mm disc (A4 B6 3.0 QUATTRO)

Brake pads (A4 288MM)

And possibly front brake hoses for 288mm setup.

Is it me or has this thread got 40+ replies too many ?

I'm now familiar with what's required, I guess I slightly misunderstood regarding the caliper sizes. My apologies.

Would the calipers from a '00 A4 TDI be suitable? That's what I've been offered complete with 312mm carriers.

Thanks.

If its a ATE B5 caliper then yes.

I think the fact its complete with 312mm carriers is the give away there :p

Well in that case no as the caliper spacing is wider on B6 uprights.

I will find the parts on ebay and post them here for you then just buy them already :p

Just buy those passat ones its your best bet and your pretty much sorted !!!

The carriers go for more than there worth on listings as the golf/a3 lads are always after them. I messaged a few breaking TT/S3's and finally managed to get some complete for £60 (in my hometown aswell) and sold the calipers for £30.
