Hi chaps,

Just bought a 1.8 non-turbo (boo!) SE, and with all it's mighty 125bhp the standard brakes are, well, ****! For the experienced folk amongst us, is there any OE brakes that could bolt straight on and provide a bit more confidence e.g. from a TQS?

Thanks.

For a 1.8 SE you could just put standard 288mm brakes from a turbo model or V6 model as think they all got 288mm or go 312mm but nothing more than that unless your plsnning dropping a BT 1.8T in there :p

Cheers mate. Would the 288mm or 312mm discs bolt straight on with the standard caliper fitted or would I need to source the calipers and carriers from the donor car? Also would the 312mm fit under the standard 16'' wheel?

Cheers.

312 mm caliper carriers required, calipers and pads are the same.

312mm fit under 16".

What car, that is compatible with my b5, has 312mm discs? From memory isn't the 312mm found on the 130/150 Golf and Bora?

Cheers.

So these would be ideal;

Plus 312mm carriers. Just to clarify, original calipers and pads are the same as ones I currently have fitted? Pardon my question, but would I not need a bigger pad to complement the bigger brake disc? It just seems odd to me that you would increase disc size and not pad size as although the disc size is bigger the same amount of pad is in contact with the disc as before and therefore providing similar, if not the same, brake performance?

Would the carriers need to come from the 2.5 V6 TDI or would any VAG 312mm carriers do?

Many thanks.

The jump from 288 to 312 isn't big enough for a bigger pad. The better stopping power comes from leverage, the further away from the hub the greater the leverage.

Think of it as an old playground roundabout, when spinning to stop it requires less effort at the outside edge, any spinning wheel for that matter.

Pagid 312 mm dics from ECP are less than £35.

No B5's got 312mm brakes

Only B6 3.0 Quattro and one of the A6 models.

Order discs to suit the B6 3.0, get carriers from an audi TT or S3 and standard A4 pads then just bolt the lot on in one its 'plug and play' basically.

Message people breaking the above as your more than likely to get a better deal on the carriers than people listing individual as these no there common for the vag market and go for £100+

My bad you have an SE do'h lol

You will need the ate caliper from an A4 with 288mm as the S3/TT caliper utilises a smaller piston.

I post some links up !!

I will be getting rid of stock front brakes from my tqs next month :)

I will let you know. Will need to check what is the state of them when I remove them from the car.

Right, just so I've got it right in my head, I need 312mm discs that are from/compatible with the b6 A4, calipers from a TQS and 312mm carriers?

Would the carriers from a TQS not support 312mm discs?

b5 1.8Tqs does come with 288mm brakes, you will need the right carriers for 312mm brakes...

You need:

312mm carrier (mk4 golf/S3/TT)
312mm disk (B6 A4 3.0)
A4 Turbo (288mm) calipers.
A4 Turbo (288mm) pads.

You need:

312mm carrier (mk4 golf/S3/TT)
312mm disk (B6 A4 3.0)
A4 Turbo (288mm) calipers.
A4 Turbo (288mm) pads.

so the mk4 312 carrier does work then kev?
Just im 100% sure my brother has a set lying in the garage from when he broke an anniversary
I take it my tdi quattro callipers aren't the same as the A4 turbo ones?

Yeh MK4 golf is the same as the S3/TT

TDI quattro should have the same calipers as 1.8T AFAIK. If they currently use 288x25mm disks then they're the right ones. Some cars (lower engine models) had a 280x22mm disk whose calipers are not compatible, but i'm fairly sure the 110hp TDI's got the turbo calipers.

Really early low engine models had a unvented disk and these will be hopeless.

I'm not sure theres a massive difference between the 312 and 288's in real world driving, most of the "improvement" i think comes simply from the fact that you've just refreshed everything with new disks and pads. I ran 288's on my TQS for 2 years including a couple track days and never managed to cook them.

my front brakes will be needing done soon and after a quick text to my brother this morning he is pretty sure he still has the carriers as well.
Im just thinking this would be a more straight forward job than the s4 front brakes ive got sitting.

Quick question, I may have sourced a pair of 312mm calipers and carriers, would the 312mm calipers fit under a 16'' wheel?

Thanks.

Thanks for the reply mate. Mine aren't 5 spoke. I have these beauties!!!

Would 312mm still fit or are the 288mm from a TQS my best option for these wheels?

Cheers.

Not a clue. If they're the same size as the 5 spokes (16x7) it'll probably go. Theres literally a fag paper between the caliper and rim though on the 5 spokes though so any narrower and it wouldnt fit.

Those wheels are boggin anyway, get some 5 spokes instead :p

Not the best alloys, as said some 16's can be a close affair with 312mm.

17's are a happy medium.

Cheers guys. Having thought about and the lack of pedigree my car has 312mm would be over kill indeed! If the 288's do a good enough job of stopping a TQS then they'll defo be enough for my car! I know the wheels are hideous, I plan to change soon, something OE I reckon, like TQS wheels?

Thanks again chaps.

Get 312mms and TQS wheels then get some facelift S4 rears, be plenty and look better than the 7" pizza's on the rear lol

Heres 312mms under 17" TQS wheels.

Or you could get B6 S4's and go all out in terms of clearance :p

Cheers Bradderz! The 312mm does look good. The b6 S4 however looks epic! Snug fit like! I reckon the FL S4 rears are hard to come by? The rears on my car do look shot mind.

Sorry thought you had a Quattro .. D'oh.

Facelift S4's arent that hard to get hold of used or you can get them from bigredd iirc or even get S8 rears which are slightly bigger iirc.

I have S4 facelifts fitted but with trig brackets and B6 300mm discs rather than standard 256mm discs.

Again clearance is tight due to the spaced out caliper.
