What's your monthly spend on Fuel and Oil?

A little history, I severely injured my spine a few years ago, and with a small bit of the compensation I was able to buy my self a A5 2.0TFSI SE (10), fantastic car but the seats suck, I've been talking to a chap on the site who can retrofit me some Electric seats how ever!

I've found my self in the position to be able to swap my A5 for the V8S5, The v8 comes with a few more miles but is still a 10plt, Is the swap worth it? The main reason I am looking at swapping is to skip what I need and what I want to be installed on my current car and just go for one that comes with it all.

Thank you for your time.

Josh.

Hi Josh, can't speak as a V8 owner but until someone comes along I'll offer the following.

Fuel wise you should be assuming around low to mid-20's depending on how you drive etc. Oil-wise, I don't believe the V8 is a prolific eater of oil so you shouldn't have a monthly spend on oil, unless you want to of course. ;)

More generally the S5 (especially V8 form) is more of a heart than head car, in terms of the interior I've found the step up from A5 3.0TDi to S5 a decent step up and it's a nicer place to be. Plus the engine (V6T in my case) always puts a smile on my face and sure it would be the same with the V8.

Unless you are doing big mile I would personally not worry too much about fuel and oil costs... But ask around for servicing costs to see if you can stomach those (and the VED).

Cheers Shrek5, Happy to have the advice, I do agree the 2.0 211bhp I have now does give me a smile, it's a brilliant car, but sadly its looking at costing quite a lot to have the seats i need installed and the other thing's Id like too.

Strange though as my 2.0 swallows OIL like nothing else.

If you do a search for 2.0 oil consumption you'll probably find a lot of hits as the 2.0 TFSi of that power/vintage quite often have this. If it is in excess of 0.5l/1000km there are a few fixes available. (Sorry if you've already searched for this).

The V8 (AFAIK) doesn't drink oil that badly. Surely... that's a reason to go for it if no other! ;) :D

haha! I do agree, I had a M3 once but the cost of fuel was so bad.

This may sound stupid, but if i were to get this v8, can I remap it to decrease the fuel consumption? as at the moment I'm paying for a wedding and a new house so cash is a little tight, how ever come 5/6 months from now I can remap it back to its standard?

I'm not aware of any such map. Certainly the V8 responds poorly to a remap for performance (negligible gains for your £) and you might be the first person to ask for a de-tune... :)

I would not have thought you would manage much gain from a detune anyway.

I thought so,

After a google session not many people have detuned, and those that have had only seen a little gain in MPG. in all honesty for the V8 it is worth the food it's given.

One other thought, although they share the same displacement the S5 and RS5 V8's a quite different in terms of internals - I *think* they are not a shared design so aren't comparable. Again, sure someone will be along who knows more on that score than me soon.

If your worried about mpg, dont buy one. you know there uneconomical there a 4.2 V8 haha
I done a 800 mile round trip to st ives cornwall cost me £90-100 each way if that helps at all? adv 27mpg on motorway with CC on 70mph.

Good luck with whatever you gone get but DON'T ever go anywhere near non-turbo based cars like v6, v8 and v10 etc... those are naturally aspirated engines which means there is no way to play around with their performance unless you go ahead and supercharge or turbocharged it which I don't think it's worth it as it would cost you fortune :(

Also fuel-wise they all gone end up the pretty much the same, nevertheless you must either spend on fuel for non-turbocharged/supercharged cars or spend on oil for heavy oil cars...

But man the top end of natural aspirated cars are so much better, you'll feel it once you drive one :)

Hope it helps

They can be thirsty and the DIS display tends to be optimistic from factory, but it all depends how you drive it. I drove it for economy most of this year and averaged about 28mpg, but recently have found my foot a little heavier and now averaging about 24.

You can check out my historical spend here: http://www.fuelly.com/car/audi/s5/2008/Cuppa/146509
although it will display US MPG unless you set it to UK MPG

Cheers Fanboy for the ADV

And big thanks to you Cuppa, interesting stuff.

I'm still contemplating a v8, or just tuning my V6TFSI 2.0 PEtch

I love my s5 v8 however if you like to put your foot down, then expect to use some fuel ;-)

I've always had issues with my back, nowhere near as bad as you, and I've always gone for cars with Sport seats as they tend to have more adjustment but it's always taken a few months to find the 'right' position for me.

Personally, I had a bad experience with a BMW a lot of years ago and it put me right off performance petrol cars. I do a lot of miles and don't see that throwing silly money at a filling station makes any sense... That said, I had the loan of an RS Q3 for a few days and having mulled it over, IF, and it's a big if, I was able to cut my commute I would consider an S5 as I totally loved driving the Q3, the noise, the grunt, the thrill of stamping on the throttle and seeing 18mpg on the DIS....

If you're committed to petrol and it's going to cost more to upgrade than it is to change then it's probably an easy decision for you.
Good luck!

Hi Josh,
You are not the first to criticise the standard SE seats which have no lumbar adjustment. The sports seats have at least either manual or electric lumbar adjustment.

My own SE has the electric memory seats with adjustable lumbar support - an essential as my much shorter wife and I share the driving on long trips - and we are both able to get comfortable.

I notice that here is a complete black SE interior with electric heated seats on e-bay for £500.

Having said all that, if your A5 is drinking oil and Audi say that they will not repair it for free then I would consider the swap. If you get the S5 then consider a warranty for at least 1 year. - and check the insurance costs!

Statler, Thank you for your input, sorry to hear about your woes, it sucks doesn't it.

Beemerboy9, Cheers for the advice, I think I will be retrofitting some seats into mine soon, once I find some spare cash, the seats are ok, for people with no mechanical (skeletal) problems, they do a good job now but just needs to be a little better.

So some news for you guys, I've recently started a new job for the GOV and part of it means driving high powered cars, Just happened to be that my instructors vehicle was a RS5. good ****. don't think i'll need to do a swap now.... but not 100% sure lol!

Can any of you guys advise me on a nice exhaust, not a boy racer 1.1ltr drone something that's subtle at low rev's until the foot goes down, people have been advising me on turbo back, cat back ect systems but to be honest it all confuses me, I'm not really clued up on a cars working or modding a car for that fact.

I heard a milltek on an S5 and they sounds lovely. Still quiet when cruising but a nice slightly louder tone when flooring it

Hi everyone, new to this site , s5 owner looking for help on clutch issue. The ignition computer and all will engage but the message keeps saying engage clutch to start car ( are doing so) the car will not start , can only assume its the clutch sensor ?? This is a common problem with the s5. ( apparently) sorry to all if I have posted in the wrong place here , but I'm having issues navigating here !! Help please

@Nina Bice - best bet would be to start a new thread as it isn't really related to the original post. In the meantime make sure that the clutch is pressed as far as it will go, sounds obvious and you might well be doing that but always good to start with checking the basics.
