I'm new to the forum, so please be gentle....
Our new 170 Quattro is for my wife to commute to work. Which has been getting more and more hairy.
So other than swapping out our awful old BMW 1'er for a nice A3, we also plumped for a dash cam.
We went for a BlackVue DG600GW HD. Not the cheapest on the market but we run the 500 on our campervan and are very happy with it. http://www.blackvue.co.uk
Everyone knows how to plug one into the cigarette lighter and stick it to the windscreen but here is how I wired it up a little tidier.
We bought:
BlackVue DG600GW HD
32gb SD memory card (Bigger than the 16gb which comes with it)
Smart Power Supply Unit
2 x BSFDual Fuse Blade Holders
Also used:
2 x Male bullet connector
Ring connector
Electrical tape
Cable ties
Taped, flat blade screwdriver (Trim remover would be safer/better)
Mole grips
Socket set
Crimper
The BSF Dual Fuse Blade holders are fantastic.
Basically, they allow you to turn one fused power supply into two. Both fused.
You need three inputs for the Battery saver, this turns off the power if your battery drops to a certain level (switch-able between 12.2v and 11.8v)
I used the Cigarette lighter fuse, as a constant supply, as this is always on.
Using the groovy BSFDual connector. You can see here that the blue 15amp fuse is for the lighter socket and there is room for another fuse, which will supply the female bulleted cable.
... the bolt on the fuse box as an earth supply.
The rear wiper fuse, as an ignition supply...
Tape up your connections, just in case
Satnav connector into the plug. Again, taped.
All cabled tied together and hidden behind the fusebox.
Then take off the A-Pillar cover, careful not to damaged it, to chase the cable to the roof and eventually to the camera. Make sure it won't interfere if your air-bag needs to save your life!
We 'hid' ours from the drivers view, behind the rear-view mirror.
Hope this helps others to add anything power related they need to be running all the time, unless the battery is low, then it should shut down.
Please tell me if I have missed something or you think I have done something totally wrong!
