Hi all

Recently bought a 2005 A3, 2.0 16v TDI, BKD engine code

Its about to hit 60,000miles, Was going to service it myself just wondering what bits to do and where to buy, what to buy etc.

Cambelt was done not that long ago, due to flywheel/clutch problem, so don't need to do that.

Is it just oil + filter, Pollen filter? I don't know much about glow plugs, am used to spark plugs (do they need changing that often?)

Hi Jimmy,

I did mine myself couple weeks ago fairly easy job to do with correct equipment.

I changed: oil, oil filter, fuel filter and air filter.

All were simple, only issue I had was finding correct socket size that could fit on the oil filter cap in the small space given.

I use eurocarparts cos they are cheapest and 9/10 times if you put your reg in on their website the parts are correct too!

I've got same engine code and year car as you so anything else give me a shout!

From what I know Glow plugs never need changing unless the are faulty. All they do is help engine start then they sleep?

As Tim said, it's a relatively straight forward engine to service. Also, glowplugs aren't changed unless they are faulty.

Stolen from another thread I posted on :

Service 1 = Oil and filter change
Service 2 = Oil, filter, Fuel Filter, Air filter, Pollen filter and Inspection .
Rinse and repeat alternating service 1 and 2 every 9k.

The actual service book probably states 40k for fuel filter and 60k for air filter, but most independent garages follow the above as it keeps it easier and there's no harm changing filters early.

Nice one, thanks for the help. I like eurocarparts, bought a few bits from them recently. Also think its up to 50% off at the moment.

May as well do all the filters mentioned i think.

Just finished doing the service. All straight forward. Used bosch filters from eurocarparts.

Only issue I had was I snapped one of the bolts on the top of fuel filter housing so had to drill it out. Luckily as I was drilling it, the drill bit gripped the bit left and turned it so it came out the bottom of hole without damaging the threads. Happy days.

Thanks for the replies. Just need to reset the service schedule on dash. It must of been set for 2yr intervals as its got loads of miles and nearly a year to go.
