Prawn and BigAls A3 Track Car

Finally read this thing start to Finnish!.. Its taken about a month! (I do have a life and a job to fit in where I can ;))

How do you find the new diff as opposed to the Quaife? I loved my Quaife diff but think id opt for a 'propper' Plated Diff next time.

Personally i wont be going all out as the costs soon mount up and I don't think id want to take it that far again, but might do the odd track day!.. Im local to curborough too so give me a shout when your next going and head up with my brother and his camera! be good to have a propper look at the car!

Thanks for reading it all! Sorry about the broken pics earlier on! One day I'll try and work out where they are and get them fixed.

The peloquin diff feels identical to the Quaife ATB to be honest. They're both Torque biasing so not a locking diff. I'd ideally like to get a proper plate diff, but as with everything, it's all money! I feel at times I've reached the limits of the ATB as I can still spin up the inside wheel a bit on corner exit.

I'm actually at Curborough again on September 7th for another sprint with CGTI, so if you're free, pop over and say hello :)

I know you have had it on a while Mr Prawn but did your strut brace make a lot of difference?

What strut brace do you mean chap?

The only strut brace I own is still sat in my garage unfitted after 6 years! Haha

Oops I thought you had fitted it. After reading the 5k posts I've got a bit lost as to where everything is at. Are you going to be fitting it or not worth it?

I'll be honest, I like the idea of increased chassis stiffness in general, but stiffening the front end only can only possible induce understeer, so I've held off thus far.

I don't really believe it will make any tangible difference though. I intend to paint it orange and fit it at some point over winter to prove / disprove my thoughts.

True. It was a special order from sparco through demon Tweeks 6-7 years ago, before they became mainstream and cheap and easily available! I was gutted when my fmic pipe work at the time stopped me fitting it! Then since changing setups twice further I've never gotten round to fitting it.

My orange / black obsession now won't allow me to fit a red brace though  so I'll need to paint it first.

Yeah wouldn't look right red. My green obsession kind of changed with the arrival of red arb and yellow springs with purple plates etc ended up with this

you cant make this one can you Al?

Sadly I am going away for six weeks and will miss quite a lot of good things including Spa. However I will be back for Donnington which we have already booked. Roll on end of October which will also see the start of "The Garage.":hubbahubba:

oh yea, i forgot I don't get go to to Spa this year because you're away :angrymod: you ******

I had somehow managed to remove that sad thought from my brain.

it does mean that there will be more chances for other people to get passenger laps at ADI though, as I'll be doing twice the driving, without Big Bad Dad in the passengers seat :sob:

sadly you are away for 6 weeks?
i bet you arent that sad about it !!!
when was spa due?

I think Spa was early September Daz, although to be honest I'm not too fussed this year as funds are tight and I'm trying to build a garage instead!

Just over a week to go until Curborough lads :) it's going to be good!

Every thursday, browsing facebook at break time, all you seem to get is 'Throw back Thursday' pictures.

So, I thought I'd post a few of my own, looking back over the years I've had the A3.

2006 - bought in summer, absolutely stock, 150bhp, 125k on the clock. I was 19, and I absolutely LOVED it!

2007 - Revo remap, 184bhp / 236lbft, an ebay induction kit, Miltek back box, and I'd stolen the TT wheels from my mums A3 by this point:

2008 - A st2 ko3S had found it's way onto the car, along with an FMIC and turbo back exhaust, 312mm brakes, single mass flywheel, and a new facelift interior. It was producing 225bhp / 290lbft, and at the time, was of course the fastest thing in the entire world!
Seen here on at one of it's first Castle Combe action days:

2009, and by this time I'd met Jardo. Much of 09 was spent on the Mini, so aside from being considerably cleaner (Thanks J-rod) the A3 hadn't changed a great deal:

it did however get it's first trip to the Ring in 2009, which really was the start of everything that's followed since!

April 2010 saw it's second trip to the Ring, further cementing my idea that this could potentially make a cracking track car:

After that followed an 8 month lay up doing nothing, in desperate need of repair with the miles adding up, it was make or break for the A3.

One more Ring trip with Dad in the new daily A3 confirmed it's fate - the 'old car' would be turned into a track car.

it was already fast, it already had good suspension, it'd be a cheap project, right?

Here's how she looked when dragged out of hibernation, rather sorry for itself:

Onto 2011, and things changed pretty quickly after that, and within 3 months it was ready for the Combe action day:

The cage came soon after:

Along with the first step towards adding some more power!

2012 Saw change again, R-tech Livery, ~290bhp ko4 hybrid, a bit of colour coding, and a few bits and bobs:

then of course that fateful Ring trip:

2013 saw the car fixed and back to full health, a new engine, producing 353bhp, and the rear wing added, my god it looked silly at this point:

Thankfully, with the additional of Plywood, all was made well, in both the looks and the handling department. this is much how it looks to this day:

Quite fun looking back at the development over the years. Comparing the first and last pictures I can safely say I never expected it to get this far all those years ago!

Long may it continue :)

I really want to put my wheels on your car one day and take it up to Farley Mount and get a picture of it in EXACTLY the same place.

really shows off your progress.
great work mate.

I think we should definitely do this!

Where's your photobucket album with the last lot of A3 pics from farley mount dude? I liked those. but can't find it now

yep!! me to man, cant believe how quick its come around!!
be awesome to see you grab another trophy!!!!
and even better if i finish a lap!!!
looking forward to meeting a few of the forum guys to!!!
whats the weather looking like for sunday?

You say that, somebody has entered who will potentially ensure that only two 8L's can get in the podium...at best.

I think we should employ Jojo to give a certain driver some dodgy curry that will see him unable to race so that Prawn and I have a chance.

I think you'll be really shocked how quick these Mk2's are going to be.

soz man dont get what you are saying?
im under no illusion how fast/slow anything is.
my last/first track day i got killed by a 205gti
though he was quicker down the straight!!
yet i easily caught and passed an ariel atom m3 and 911.
nothing on track is obvious.

Looking forward to a good battle with Gurds again :) was so much fun last time!

Plenty of fast cars booked on the day so who knows what'll happen :) it'll be fun whatever happens :)

yeh its going to be great fun.
looking forward to it!!!!
be good to see comparison between jojo's stage 1, jardos stage 2 and your car!
do you get plenty of viewing time ?
