name that noise?

does sound like it might be the bushes on the cam chain tenssioner, if it was the lifters then it would sound more even, like a steady click click click, but that sounds random, like click ...... click click ....... click ......click click click like a chain bouncing.

cheers pal, so maybe just the bushes as opposed to the whole tensioner? the tensioners are pretty expensive arnt they?

ye they are, most of the time its the bushes that wear, audi dont have just the bushes and try to sell you the whole unit. im sure someone on here knows where to get just the bushes from if that is the issue.

Could be a leak from the manifold can't hear that well but when mine went it sounded like a bag of spanners
Just a quick suggestion and it wasn't constant and worse when cold

hey all, i just went out to have a look and im now thinking the noise is coming from the bottom... i jacked it up and the sound is definitely louder down there?
like i say i replaced the oil pump a few weeks back, its the the same noise what i assumed was the top end being starved of oil, although alot louder now, it went when i fitted the pump.... could the topran oil pump have failed already? i know its not the regular whirrring noise..

dont feel like having the rocker off too look now im not sure its coming from there... in reality i should get out there and have both off for a look i guess!

also jardo the noise in unchanged by the clutch so im counting out release bearing, loose flywheel bolts maybe.

uuuurgh ive sat hear all day googling and going back out listening to the darn thing and got nowhere lol... if i actually knew where the darn noise was coming from i would do something... im 75 percent sure its bottom now... taking that sump off is such a pig...

could be oil pump chain tensioner snapped i guess... that would be a new noise as it was there when i done the oil pump obviously......

cars suck ****....

think im just gonna buy beer and forget for today, sump off is a morning job.

im paying my mechanic to come round and id the issue for 30 quid, im not stripping the sump off if its the water pump... hate admitting defeat!

Well I hope he is right, he said its a seized aircon pump!-) thats great news as I have considerd removing it altogether anyway if thats possible, can I get a shorter belt or will it foul on something?

yeh you cab get a shorter belt, that's what i did. Off a 1.8n/a if i remember right

its not the ac pump.... just started it with the belt off and the noise is still there..... you expect a mechanic to know what he is on about! so now paying him for a wrong diagnoses and buying a used ac pump im no better off.... well i now know its not ac, powersteering pump or alternator i guess...

video 4.... been round my mates and we are both pretty sure its coming from the bottom end. gotta get the sump off now and check the oil pump assembly (chain tensioner and sprocket) then give all the rods a good shake.... uuurgh. missus needs the car for one more week till she gets her company car so at two minds wiether to open it up today only to put it back together to open it again or wait a week... we opened the oil cap and the noise didnt get louder so we're assuming its not top end. im thinking rod bearings/oil pump assembley/water pump now....

no low pressure warnings, had a little top end noise a few months back so i changed the oil pump and gunked pick up then i ran fine!? maybe some damage occured and has got worse.... i hyad the aux belt off and ran the engine, the noise was still there, its defo not a cover its from the engine, hoping its oil pump chain tensioner tbh as i never changed this when i done the pump... thought also maybe the topran pump has failed already? doesnt sound like yours when i blew then karl?

could also be water pump, rods (big or little ends) or main crank bearings i guess

if you're taking the sump off and changing the tensioner on the oil pump you could also get a new set of main bolts and take the main caps off.
Although that doesn't sound like any knocking ive ever heard before, not that I have much experience.
Sounds very exhaust related to be, doesn't sound like anything big or substantial is knocking about.
No, mine just hesitated and then went kaboom within about 5 seconds lol

you mean to check the big ends for wear? i was hoping they would (well not hopeing lol) pretty loose and easy to diagnose if it were rod knock, just grab and shake?

exhaust related? im leaning towards the tensioner atm..

would have had it off but ive got a guy coming down off swapz to swap my bbs lm reps for some rs6 rims so prob be tomorrow now! finally after a year of my fake bbs im pretty sick of the sight of em! ordered face lift front and rear lights the weekend to after the mechanic diagnosed it as ac pump... skint me a bit more, teach me for being naive and thinking a reputable mechanic knows what he is on about!

sounds terminal to me, Big ends, probably span a shell. If it was a bet rod, i'd expect it to have smashed the oiler off and got quieter by now. Get the sump off, its a gallon of oil and some sealer to look and know for sure

ok cheers mate thanks for being honest, i will get it off in the morning, i havent got much experience with internals, will it be crank out and reground if its spun? best case scenario?

Cheaper to replace with known working unit. And perhaps rebuild this one over time. 1.8t std stroke cranks are cheap enough. Binned a few tbh and to change crank engine gotta come out anyways. Rods n rebuild if you do it yourself is doable for sensible monies

cheaper to throw a used engine in you mean? i will be doing it myself if need be, i downloaded a 1.8t rebuild guide the other day...

is it common for it to run so well? it started rattling 3-4 weeks ago and has gradually got worse being used pretty much everyday, my mate said usually a big end will last 2-3 days at the most...?
suppose we wont know until i get it open, guessing it will be pretty obvious once i grab them?

this video is a tt that did spin a big end.... sounds they same dont it!..... this is gonna suck.

assuming it is when i look in the morning ive found an amk lump at a reasonable price, is there any difference between that and my apy? should go straight in no?

on a plus note i swaped my bbs lm reps for some rs6 reps today...

after dropping the big ends it had spun bearing 2 and 4, there is minimul scoreing on the crank and rod so i think im gonna throw some new big ends on and see how it goes, gotta be worth a shot right?

are these the right size? ive read king bearings have a good rep, i dont want to spend mega bucks as i will be building an engine over the next 6 months anyway... just want it to be usable if possible?

they are on ebay uk, not sure why its up in dollars?

number 2 and 4 had spun, 4 being the worst, the crank shot is where number 4 was. the scoreing in very minimal although rod 4 has worn down im wondering if its to bad for me to put a standard sized shell straight in?
My mate came round whos done a bit or engine building, he told me he has cleaned up rods in a worse shape and thrown big ends in and its worked...

Yeah I am mate, ordered some acl so the get the extra oil round em. For 60 quid its worth a shot, wasnt knocking real bad so I might be lucky.

i offered up an acl bearing in the worst cap today and it fits lovely, cant see any light through it when held up to the light...

any clue on how to get any shavings outta the engine?

update, she is back together, only changed the big ends. started it and let it idle for 5 min then a few small revs too 2k and no knocking so thats a good sign, guess its just down to whether it lasts 10min or a few thousand miles now. not getting any hopes up and as soon as funds allow im gonna start gathering parts for an ie rod build.
