SO theres been a few people comment on the fact that the new S1 is permanent and a few people contradict this. I've also had 2 Audi dealership salesmen tell me its permanent and only 1 Audi dealership salesman tell me its haldex. (before anyone slates my salesmen comment above i know they don't know everything im purely stating what I've heard s far)

So ive compiled abit of evidence in favour of it being both Haldex-type and permanent. also some referring to in being a 60/40 split but can be adjusted to 50/50 through its variable distribution of driven torque.

For permanent:

Audi S1 infograph states permanent:
http://www.audi-sport.net/xf/threads/s1-infographics.213254/

Audi UK states permanent:
https://www.audi.co.uk/about-audi/l...quattro-the-new-audi-s1-and-s1-sportback.html

Audi Ireland states permanent:
http://www.audi.ie/ie/brand/en/mode...models/A1/s1/engines/tfsi.html&container=page

Audi mediaservices states permanent:
https://www.audi-mediaservices.com/...teilungen/2014/02/12/the_audi_s1_and_the.html

gtspirit.com, Driving.co.uk, irishtimes, denverpost, designboom, Redbull, topgear, itsgotwheels, motorauthority, 4wheelsnews all state permanent

For Haldex:

EVO states Haldex based:
http://www.evo.co.uk/news/geneva_motor_show/291760/audi_s1_quattro_revealed_geneva_2014.html

Autocar and topspeed both state Haldex-type:
http://www.autocar.co.uk/car-review/audi/s1/first-drives/audi-s1-uk-first-drive-review
http://www.topspeed.com/cars/audi/2014-audi-s1-ar139190.html

So does anyone have proof that it is either permanent or Haldex? from what i have read so far it maybe a Haldex-based system that splits power 60/40 all the time but can adjust it to 50/50.

Any more for any more?

@monopole @The Challinor I've tagged you both as you have both mentioned the Quattro/Haldex on my S1 feedback thread.

@veeeight I've tagged yourself as you seem to be the fountain of Audi knowledge :)

The autocar also states haldex as being passive (think they mean torsen) - so I wouldn't take their opinion too seriously. Note they say it's 'not' haldex...

My understanding is it is 60/40 with up to 50/50 if needed. No idea if Haldex/Torsen(unlikely)/something else(multi-plate clutch?)

I have seen a few comments about it being Haldex-type and a multi plate clutch affair.

Where have you seen autocar say that its passive? i cant find it? i can only find this:

'More transformative than that engine, in fact, is the S1’s four-wheel drive system. It's a proprietary set-up driven by a multi-plate clutch rather than the passive, Haldex-type system that Audi has used on its transverse-engined cars in previous years.

Under normal conditions, it splits engine torque 60/40 front to rear, but when wheelspin is detected up front, up to 50 per cent of drive goes rearwards. So there’s always a healthy portion of power at the rear wheels, whether the front ones have started to run out of grip or not.'

Reading further... Topspeed actually reference the Polo R when talking about Haldex, not the S1...
And Evo do state it's a 'new generation' Haldex.

As I stated above, many places say it is a 'multi-plate clutch' - well, guess how Haldex works! Multi-plate clutch :)

So I'm saying it's Haldex, but unlike previous applications that start at 100/0 bias and shove up to 50% rear, this starts at 60/40 and shoves 10% rear as needed... And this change in bias is what Audi are calling 'new generation'.

You just quoted it yourself!!!

"It's a proprietary set-up driven by a multi-plate clutch rather than the passive, Haldex-type system that Audi has used on its transverse-engined cars in previous years."

It is saying the S1 uses a multi-plate clutch system (which is what Haldex is), rather than passive Haldex as with older Audi's (Haldex is electronically controlled, Torsen is passive).
So the statement is so wrong it's not even funny!

To summarise, it appears Audi have made their latest Haldex system to behave more like (the superior) Torsen system. Torsen is only really suitable for longitudinal/heavier applications, so it makes sense that they are doing this.
