This probably will never happen, but has got me wondering.

How easy would it be to convert my 2wd Sportback 1.8 TFSI S-Tronic to 2WD 3.2V6 S-Tronic?

I assume the gearbox is the same.

I assume the engine would run without Quattro, as 2wd?

I also assume the same question applies to the 3.6 FSI?

I have been looking for a suitable 3.2 on Autotrader for about 4 months now but cannot find any for sale that have the same colour as mine (Avus Silver) or the same mileage as mine (under 40k) or the same condition (mine is mint!) so a swap might be the only way forward.

I don't think you would want a fwd v6. When the haldex failed on mine making it run fwd i couldn't put my foot down properly and enjoy the engine because the traction control constantly kicked in, when that was turned off it wheelspun everywhere.

would probably be a big job tbh, engine mounting is completely different etc

Got to agree on all counts.

To be fair,I've learnt over the years, that almost anything CAN be done,it's more a question of whether or not it's worth doing it.

In this case, putting a heavy V6 into a car which understeers heavily in Quattro form,is a recipe for if not disaster, then certainly poor handling and traction.

Fair enough :)

Another question then, if one was to buy a 3.2, how easy would it be to fit the 3.6 from the R36 passat? Is it a straight swap? Assume both are DSG.

I would keep looking on Autotrader or Pistonheads as your proposals will become very expensive and then resale eventually will be very poor.
Good cars do pop up, about 4 months ago my son bought an R32 with only 16,000 miles and it is as good as it gets. Recently one was sold with only 3,400 miles and had been a summer driver only. The R32 does generate loads of interest from other people, much more than my S3. Being realistic, the S3 is quicker than the r32 if you put you foot down. The r32 pulls well from low revs then becomes a little flat in the middle and then picks up again after 4000 rpm. A Revo stage 1 sorts this out though.
No turbo lag and an exhaust note that is delicious are the major plus points. All of these points apply to the A3 3.2 but the A3 is much more of a sleeper with the R32 being the enthusiasts car.
Have patience!!

if it's the 3.2 you want, then VW R32 it.

It's a prettier car, and you can have more extras than the A3.

I don't like the MK5 R32 the interior is terrible compared to the A3 8P2, all plasticky.

I did not buy an R32 due to the poorer interior than my mk iv GTi. Instead, I bought the S3 as it is more upmarket inside compared to the R32 in addition to a the things we like about the S3.
However as we are touring the Lake District at the moment in my son's r32 I can appreciate that it is a very good car and just flew up the Kirkstone pass today!

I got the best of both worlds s3 cabin sleeper looks r32 noise, as for engine swap would turbo if money was available alternatively just keep waiting one will come along
