Hello guys!

Since my shift knob is a bit scratched and worn I got the brilliant idea of replacing it with the OEM aluminum shift knob found in the A1 Quattro (and some 8V S3's). Can someone tell for sure if this knob would fit my 2008 S3 8P?

This is the knob I'm thinking about:
http://www.bks-tuning.com/audi/a3-s...oem-audi-a1-a3-8p-q3-alu-shift-knob-gear.html

From the title and description it seems to be a direct fit on both A3 8P and Q3, plus the leather boot looks similar to mine when fitted on the A1, but I need to know for sure before I order one.

I've found the following part numbers while searching for this:

A1 6-speed gearbox (production 03/12 - 11/12): 8X0863278J -HVI (gaiter in black with red stitching), -QQX (gaiter in black with black stitching) -XBA (gaiter in black leather with silver stitching) -ZDP (gaiter in black leather with alabaster white stitching)

A1 6-speed gearbox (production 12/12 - ): 8X0863278Q -QQX (gaiter in black with black stitching) -XBA (gaiter in black leather with silver stitching) -ZDP (gaiter in black leather with alabaster white stitching)

So can someone tell me if this would fit without any modifications?

Thanks in advance

Awesome find! Ive been searching for this as its an option i wanted on my S1 :)

Nice find!

I quite like the look of this, it might make a nice cosmetic change to the standard S3 gear knob...

great find. i was thinking about that gear knob, but never found any online for sale.

Not that I'm aware of since both the A1 Quattro and the new S1 only comes with manual.. There are some other versions available on that site though :)

So have you bit the bullet and ordered?
My gear knob is looking tired, so looking for a replacement too.

there's one for sale on eBat at the minute but it says 'for left hand drive only'? its from Germany but i cant understand why it would only fit left hand drive?

eBay - Item # 380963964921

No haven't ordered one yet, I'm going to visit my Audi dealer next week to get some other things as well so i will ask them a bit more and probably order one from them directly. On those ebay photos it looks like it's an exact match dimension-wise to the original S3 one, just gonna take a closer look on an A1 to be sure it really is the same boot and mount on these.

There shouldn't be any differences at all when it comes to left or right hand drive, but I can't say for sure. If you check the link in my first post it says both left and right. There are differences on pretty much all automatic shifters though.

Here's another thread discussing pretty much the same thing, but for an A1:

Ive read that thread already but there doesn't seem to be a part number for the S1 yet

The part numbers for the S1 seems to be the same as those listed above according to ETKA, I found these with a VIN from a 2014 S1 Sportback, description says "gearstick knob, alu with gearstick trim, leather"

8X0 863 278 Q XBA - silver stitching
8X0 863 278 Q EAY - yellow stitching
8X0 863 278 Q DWJ - express red stitching

wonder what the difference between this and the one with J instead of Q in the part number is, maybe the production date as others have mentioned...

Thats awesome thanks alot! any idea why it would be left hand drive only?

My guess is that there is no difference at all between left and right hand drive. Maybe some german guy thought everything is "mirrored" on a right hand drive including the gearbox.. ;) Or maybe since all DSGs and S-tronic shifters are in fact mirrored on right hand drive cars. It makes no sense at all if there would be any differences, but it still might be a good idea to check with your Audi dealer or a mechanic just to be sure :)

So what makes a gearknob compatible? Can we fit any audi gearknob onto the a3?

They are probably saying it's for left hand drive only so you cant come back at him if you have any problems with it but I don't see why it wouldn't fit.

The main difference between knobs is the boot and its frame, since the manual knobs comes with the leather boot. The 8V S3 has a more 'rectangular' frame and will most likely not fit the A1/8P S3. The TT has a circular frame and so on. You can remove the knob from the boot, and in some cases fit it on the original boot which has a different frame design. I've seen this A1 Quattro knob fitted on some B6 A4 as well as some guys fitting regular Audi A3 knobs on Golf GTI's so there are some possibilities even if the frames are different...

I have finally fitted this lovely knob to my S3! Ordered it directly from my Audi dealer with the part number in my first post. Perfect fit without any modifications at all :) I also did the ashtray delete at the same time which gives a very nice storage compartment!

This is how the beauty looks in an S3..

dare we ask how much it was from audi ?
does look cool though :thumbs up:

Not as much as I thought it would be, 1300 swedish kr, maybe 115 GPB or so, I found that pretty cheap actually considering how expensive special audi parts usually are :) Don't know how much swedish prices differ from the UK though..

Looks fantastic. Good work, and thanks for the info...

Hi,

I was wondering whats the exact part number which you have ordered? As you mentioned:

"I have finally fitted this lovely knob to my S3! Ordered it directly from my Audi dealer with the part number in my first post. Perfect fit without any modifications at all :) "

And two parts numbers are mentioned in your first post who matches this knob:

A1 6-speed gearbox (production 03/12 - 11/12): 8X0863278J -XBA (gaiter in black leather with silver stitching) -
A1 6-speed gearbox (production 12/12 - ): 8X0863278Q -XBA (gaiter in black leather with silver stitching)

So which one did you ordered?
I've ordered the last one (8X0863278Q -XBA) for my A3 S line 2011 with silver stiching in the seats hope it fits :)

And thanks for this post!

The gaiter will not fit straight into your a3 its a different shape at the bottom. You will need to remove the gearknob off the gaiter you recieve and swap it over to onto your current gaiter.

Its a bit of a mission and a chinese puzzle to get off. But its well worth the hassle.

Thought I'd clarify this and update with the current part numbers for all those interested in this knob..

8X0 863 278 J (the part number that I ordered) was the original part number for the A1 Quattro. It has since then been replaced by the "Q" along with the introduction of the new S1. The two parts are identical, but the new "Q" is available in a few more stitching options to match the quattro design packs for the S1. There is also a 5-speed version of this knob, the original part number for this was 8X0 863 278 H, which was then replaced by "R".

So the current part numbers are the following:

8X0 863 278 R - 5-speed
8X0 863 278 Q - 6-speed

Both are available with the following stitching options:

DWJ - Express red
EAY - Yellow
QQX - Black
XBA - Silver
ZDP - Alabaster white

The old "H" and "J" part numbers might still be available somewhere, the "J" knob also had the Misano red stitching option (HVI). From what I can see this is still available.

Then there is the same knob for the new 8V S3, with the part number 8V0 863 278 G. This has a more rectangular surround at the gaitor and is not a straight fit to the 8P. The A1/S1 part numbers has the exact same surround and gaitor and is a 100% straight fit.

Hope this helps someone in the future :)

Probably.. By using the original surround and gaitor like you did the knob could be fitted to pretty much any audi or VW with the "moon shaped" stick which is pretty cool... :)

Really would have liked the new gaiter to have just worked and not given me hours of stress to remove the knob.
But i found out the plastic frame of the gaiter was cracked so i got a very nice £30 off :D

The only way you can obtain one of these A1 Quattro alloy gearsticks, is to buy directly from Audi Onsnabruck, on their eBay listing.
If you try and order one here through Audi Uk, German suppliers will refuse to sell you one.
For some unknown reason, German legislation, specifies that if you order a A1 Quattro alloy stick, you have to own the car it was designed for.

It does not matter what Audi you own, unless you have the A1 Quattro, and can prove it to them, with the right documentation, you cannot order one from here in the Uk.

I ordered mine from Asnabruck Audi on their eBay site, it say,s for left hand drive, but it does not matter, it's a direct swap on my A1 Sport, and looks totally amazing.

Asnabruck, want around £100 delivered, and it's a complete steal.

I ordered mine, and it arrived in five days, and no questions were asked what car I had.

Ordering it from Audi Uk, forget it, the Spanish Inquisition would be an easier option.

My friend owns, a stunning 1990 BMW Z1 coupe, with only 21000 genuine miles from new.

We tried to order a set of genuine Alpina RLE alloys, from Alloy Wheels Direct.

They source all the original wheels from Germany, and Alpina wanted to know my friends chasi number, and V5 document, to prove I actually owned a hellish RLE BMW Z1.

I had to fax copies of those documents, but because my friends BMW is a standard Z1, they said no.

Alpina had ten original RLE wheel sets still in stock, but were reserved for owners of those genuine vehicles, who may need spares in the future.

The fact I had £1809 ready to pay for them, did not matter.

The same would be for that A1 alloy nob, there is limited stock of them left, and ordering one from Audi Uk would be pointless, Germany will not sell you one.

Sarbrucken Audi will, and their service and delivery was amazing.

Hi Peter,

What you are telling is real strange. I ordered my S1 knob directly from our local Volkswagen garage without any questions.

What's the feel of the gear knob like fellas? It looks mint but a bit of a funny shape, so making sure people are happy with it before I order.

Do you mind me asking how much and where from as well please?

I love the feel of it, but being all aluminum it sure can get hot in the summer (and ice cold in the swedish winter) :p Some S1s and 8V S3s comes with this knob so try to find one of those and test for yourself.

I ordered mine from my Audi dealer with the part number in my post above, was a bit cheaper than BKS too :)

know this is a two year thread but i ve been searching for that gear knob.i ve checked on the ebay shop mentioned but no sign of it available.any chance anyone know alternate shops?also on ebay price seems to be near the 250 euro mark which seems steep...

Try parts request here on audi-sport or even audi dealers. It might be cheaper.
Prices went 2× when people started buying them as oem+ upgrade.
