I'm new here and looking at getting an avant. Quick question?
What are the pros and cons between the 140 and 170 models?
Cheers guys

Sorry to butt in on your post but glad you asked this question, I've had an '06 avant now for 5 years (143 bhp) only an SE not an s-line.
I'm just about to take the plunge and shell out for a b8, really looking forward to it... However, I had my heart set on a '59 plate s-line 2.0 tdi (170) which I've seen but now I'm having second thoughts as a couple of people have told me I'm really gonna notice the difference fuel wise? I fancied the 170 as far as I'm concerned the 143 has been an absolutely great car and I've always been pleased with the way it performs, so with that in mind thought the 170 would be even better? So as the title asks what are the pros and cons? Would it have a dpf? Would the fuel aspect be noticeable?
Once again sorry to pretty much ask the same question and but in on your post.. Any feedback would be appreceiated

I have a 143bhp S-Line and its not slow by any means and pretty economical. I havent had a 170bhp but i wanted one before i got my current B7. It was too nice to let pass me by and im glad i didnt.

My logic was that if i felt that 143 wasnt enough a good remap would see a bit more oomph. As standard, it is quick enough. I had mine mapped just because i couldnt map my previous cars. The car pulls like a train. It sees about 185bhp now. I didnt notice any difference in the mpg with doing this.

if you get a 143 and its not quick enough, remap! But i cant tell you reliability-wise whether its better, although, mine has never gone wrong and passed its last 3 mot's without and advisory. Its a 2005 plate.

I bet you if its got 170 bhp then your more likely to use that power which will use up the fuel more.
At a guess id say at 50mph cruising along i bet they are both the same.
Id love to know this answer too.
Ps. Ive got 140 and its rubbish on fuel..
I was sure it wasnt right and it seems it has got a fault that i cant diagnose at present.
So my point is some cars that are bad on fuel might have other issues rather than just a heavy foot

Just to point out that the 140bhp engine suffers from the same balancer shaft oil pump issue.

It goes by chassis not engine. but its just a case of getting a good one. If you can afford or find one, the 2.7tdi is supposed to be the best engine reliability/power wise and the one i wanted, but i couldnt find a good one. Id go for the 3litre if your insurance allows it.

But out of the 140/170 id say if you find a good enough example of either then both are acceptable.

I've got the 140bhp, no issues other than glow plug and loom. Currently just hit 90k and had from 69 I think it was. Currently had a couple of 170's in and they both have had seperate issues. Not saying the 140 is any better but I've not had any issues (touch wood)

Powerwise I found the 140 with a decat and rear silencer delete to have a lot more of a torquey pull to it and the engine seemed a lot easier to rev. Not loud either as still has a silencer in which is just right.
