Hi all

As title suggests what's everyone's thoughts?

Protect for the impending winter or continue routine protection myself until nicer weather hopefully arrives in spring 2015, the main purpose of the professional detail is light swirl removal, correction and then a good protection.

Reasons here and votes in the Detail section poll would be greatly appreciated!

Get it done NOW to protect for the winter is what I would suggest :icon thumright:

f you get it done by a pro I would consider one of the glass coating eg CarPro Cquartz CQUK or Finest, Gtechniq Crystal Serum & the like. Just a thought ... ;)

Personally I'd polish & wax/seal yourself for winter and get the professional detail done in spring.

Have you considered doing the paint correction yourself?

thanks Squire, I have considered doing it myself but don't think I could actually do it successfully.

Line of thinking is getting it fully corrected then invest in kit to lightly correct in the future allowing me time to search best tools and kit available.

This is a huge can of worms, trust me. Once you start on this path detailing will take over you life, but for the better!

With it being a new car ( not sure how new ) if it's been pre-washed well should only need minimum correction so I'm sure you could get good results by yourself.

Again obviously you want to correct and polish or correct / polish ( 1 step ) then use a wax or sealant for protection.

How much correction does it need? Swirls, scratches, etc? If not SRP would be good to use, if not ultimate compound to help remove swirls, scratches, marring, etc.

Detailing is very subjective and depends on each car / paint / condition but hopefully this will be useful to you.

Can confirm its addictive! I've spent hours and hours, not to mention £00's on detailing gear.

Thanks mate for your valuable input but you DIDN'T ANSWER MY QUESTION lol!

Car was born on March 02 ( collection day) and has covered 1300 miles and the car is driven about twice a week. Is in need of correction which I don't feel I could do myself without the necessary skills and kit. Ideally, I could wait until spring 15 but was wondering what steps I could take to protect the paint work from harsh UK weathap until then?

Apologies, but keep that knowledge for future reference. If there is nothing on it at all then and you just want to protect, use a wax or sealant.

Wax = natural look, Classic car shine.
Sealant = synthetic look, ultra glossy glass like look, etc.

That's a basic description of the 2, these are both LSP ( last step protection ) which is what your after.

Take a look at Auto Glym EGP, chemical guys black light ( sealant ) or megs ultimate wax, auto glym high def wax just to name a few - there are loads all with different finishes, some liquid, paste, cream, etc.

Thanks Chall! Wax then sealant yeah? Any need to clay the car or leave that for my pro detailer in spring as no doubt he'll do that in the correction process?

Thanks again for your advice. :-D

Claying not necessary mate?
Only one like in this thread! lol

Whereas claying is really essential before polishing its not imperative you do it before waxing / sealing.

When you polish your working directly in the paint to improve it, remove defects, bring up the colour, etc.

Wax / sealing has no "cut" so any containments in the paintwork will simply just be covered over, opposed to when polishing without claying your working all the containments into your paint work ( not good ).

You'll have a better looking smoother finish with claying ( i'd give the Farecla clay mitt a go from Halfords before you polish in the future).

Bear in mind that clay removes ALL wax, sealant, glazes, polish etc so once you clay you have got to do everything else!

Just take it to an automatic car wash already !

All this faffing about with wax paste creams liquids ......

Hey Chall!

As it it's going to cost me £300ish for the full detail where Gtechniq products are applied I'm going to hang on until the end of March continuing my routine cleaning and protecting process during the autumn (feels like autumn now!) and winter. So bit of a wait but minor paint defect in specifically in terms of light swirls doesn't dictate an immediate detail so I'll wait for better weather allowing me time to invest into a Da polisher and kit.

Thanks again for your help mate.

No worries, just finished a few months research into a DA ( yes I overthink everything ). So I'm pretty up on it now lol.

Real question, wax or sealant?

Just make sure you don't inflict any further damage to the paintwork over Autumn/Winter.

I recommend the use of a citrus pre-wash and/or snow foam to remove the bulk of the road grime before you wash it using the 2- bucket method.

Let's make this in to an easy to follow list (if that's helpful?)

- snow foam (lots of good products around - try Valet Pro used through a snow foam lance).
- wash (preferably with wool mitt and two bucket method)
- dry with clean microfibre cloths / drying towels.
- apply a contaminant / tar remover (agitate with wool mitt and plenty of water after letting it dwell). Usually a spray. CarPro TRIX is a good product for this.
- wash and dry again as noted above.
- clay with a mild clay bar with plenty of quick detailing spray.
- wash and dry again as noted above.
- Now apply a good quality sealant to help keep the paint protected for longer after your hard working getting it cleansed. Spray type is easiest to use - spray on / wipe off. Would suggest Angelwax TI-22 as it's cheap and has excellent longevity.
- wax the whole car with something heavy duty - I would suggest Collinite 476S. Very long lasting and adds a good shine. Apply the wax with a sponge applicator and then buff with a clean microfibre. Try and do this 2-3 times.
- your done !

£120 should be enough for the above.

If you got some swirls, I 'd leave that to a detailer to sort after the winter. The above regime will get the car sorted for winter and can be topped up every 3 months by repeating. Just amend your washing regime to include the sńow foam and two bucket method (if not already doing so). It should stop you adding any further swirl.

While you are getting the car corrected next year, watch and learn the technique for you to then feel confident with a DA polisher. Youtube videos don't compare to watching it being done professionally. You will also learn what's a good pad and polish combo for your paint without having to experiment!

DA is easy Chall's - DAS 6 Pro on the CYC GB on DW ;)

One or 'tother as both together will compromise the other product in my experience

Ordered last night, it's coming Tuesday you same username on DW?

Yes I agree and both off different finishes it's one of the other, not both.

Really ? How's that then in terms of sealant and then wax?

I have found in the past, when experimenting with using both, that the finish/durability is compromised mixing 'em

Since then it's one or the other for me

Some love 'em together some don't & I'm in the latter camp ;)

A very subjective topic detailing IMHO

Yep very subjective as don't agree! :tumble:. I guess I can only go on my own experiences and what's worked for me.

Cleansed clear coat, sealant, layers of wax - beads for months and makes my cleaning regime easy peasy.

Subjective it most certainly is

Whatever works for you my friend :thumbs up:

You forgot to polish :p

Nope - I'm swirl free baby!

Pointless when the clear coat is in excellent condition. That subjective enough for you all? LOL :moa:

Think everyone is a bit lazy and has a stage that they miss.

I hate DA polishing so try and avoid it. Have better stuff to be doing all weekend. Spend more time cleaning then driving it sometimes :faint:
